History

The idea of a jazz festival started when Nepal’s first jazz band, Cadenza, played in a music festival in Australia in 2
000. They realize that Nepali jazz enthusiasts can’t afford to visit foreign countries to participated in such festivals and the much viable solution was to invite them in Nepal for a musical festival. That’s how Jazzmandu brought Jazz to Kathmandu.

Jazzmandu was started in 2002 on the initiation of Cheddup Bomzan and Cadenza drummer and vocalist Navin Chettri after the success of the first Jazz at Patan in 2001. Since then, the festival has grown into an internationally recognized, week-long, multi-venue festival featuring Nepali musicians and international artists.

Some of the prominent artists who have performed at Jazzmandu before include: Don Burrows (2002), Jesse van Ruller (2003), Trilok Gurtu (2003), Jamie Baum (2003), Steve Berios (2006), Dario Eskenazi (2009), Ari Hoenig (2010), Xiomara Laugart (2011), and others.
