Water level rises across danger lever threatening flood in Koshi River

Authorities have again raised red flag and lit red lights at the Koshi barrage on Saturday afternoon when the water level in the Saptakoshi River in Sunsari rises significantly and crossed the danger level of 150,000 cusec.

The water flow was recorded 150,480 cusec at around 4 pm, Sub Inspector of the Koshi Barrage Police Station Shambhu Basnet said. On Friday also, the water flow was recorded at 158,240 cusec at 3:15 pm and the red flag was raised and the red light was lit at 6:15 am on Friday morning after the water flow in the river was recorded over 150,000 cusec. Water level rose due to continuous rainfall in hilly region.

As the water level rises, it increases the risk of flood at the eastern embankment at Prakashpur area. The increase in water level at the barrage is due to thickening of river bed and this thickening is due to continuous sedimentation of sands and dirt eroded by the Himalayan rivers at the barrage, according to experts.
