There is a sanitary awareness program going on in a remote district in Nepal, Kalikot. The program aims to have toilet for everybody in the district by the year 2015. To support the noble cause, the district council has formulated a requirement in which every citizenship certificate applicant need to have a toilet at home.
That is not all, every government employee, political leaders, and social workers need to have a toilet at home.
The “no toilet, no …” campaigns have been highly successful in motivating rural population for social transformation and get themselves aware of the need of sanitation and cleanliness. In the district, the population having toilets in their home has increased from 2% last year to 28% this year.
Last year, employees of a number of organizations in Dolpa district in Karnali Zone, Western Nepal were told that they will lose their job if they don’t construct toilets in their house by the end of the fiscal year. The campaign was successful in motivating the people to construct toilets in the area.
Another similar campaign in India, no toilet, no wedding campaign has also shown positive impact in the society.
