Dirty politics – Constituent Assembly membership sold for 1.6m per year
It was an open truth that the political parties had made the Constituent Assembly (CA)a very profitable business with the seats on sale during the 2008 election. The one who pays the most got the ticket in the poll and others "purchased" the nomination seats later. At least a dozen businessmen had managed to get in the CA to do their business there. An example on how those people could get the ticket from the political parties surfaced when one of the CA member refused to pay the agreed sum to one of the political parties.
The CA member representing Nepal Janta Dal, Prof. Dr. Bishwanath Prasad Agrawal had agreed to pay 91% of all the remuneration and bonus received from the CA to the party. Apart from that, he had also agreed to pay the party Rs. 1 million every year. Nayapatrika has published the agreement document (attached) between the party and Agrawal. The party president of Janta Dal, Haricharan Sah released the agreement letter after the relationship between Sah and Agrawal became sour.

CA member returned his benefits
CA member representing Dalit Janjati Party of Nepal, Bishwendraman Pashwan has returned back Rs.1,20,700 that he received in the span of two years he was the CA member. That would make about Rs. 5,000 per months when divided by 24 months.Mr. Paswan has told that the money belongs to the people and CA members have no rights to the money as the mandate given by the the people during the election – to write the Constitution within two years, was not done.
Although the move sounds patriotic and with good intention, it is possible that Mr. Paswan wanted to rip some political benefit from the move by returning only a part of the benefits he received for being a CA member.

Sunil Babu Pant, gay rights activist and CA member
Sunil Babu Pant should be hailed to be courageous enough to announce that he is a gay and win election in a relatively conservative Nepali society. Now, he is representing the minority community in the Constituently Assembly (CA). Pant, 36, a computer engineer by training, won CA election from Gorkha district. He is one of the five CA members representing CPN(U), a small communist party. Apart from being a CA member he is in LGBT (lesbian gay bisexual transgender) rights group in Blue Diamond Society, a society representing gay/bisexual people in Nepal.
If Pant is to be believed, he is not the only gay member in the parliament. He claims to know at least five more gay/lesbian members, personally.
