The sequel of superhit movie ‘Loot’, ‘Loot 2’ is in making. An item song of the movie titled ‘Laijau Thamel Bazar …’ was released on October 22 featuring a new item girl, Alisha Rai, as Sundari. The song composed by Kali Prasad Baskota features the voices of Kali Prasad Baskota, Mina Niraula and Bhanubhakta Dhakal, and is written jointly by Ektaare and Kali Prasad Baskota.
The sequel features most of the cast and the crews of the original movie. In the original movie, ‘Loot’ the item song titled ‘Udhreko Choli ..’ had become very popular. The song had established actress Sushma Karki as an item girl. It is to be seen if Alisha Rai will follow the success of Sushma Karki. ‘Loot’ is credited for rescuing the Nepali movie industry when it was in its worst time in the history.

A friend in Twitter, Rakesh, has categorized the Nepali movies in four different types. Although the categorization is done very loosely and the boundary of this categorization is extremely blurry, such a categorization can give a rough guide on what a particular movie is like. I think, there is room for improvement in this categorization so that one can easily decide on whether to watch the movie or not. There is a possibility that some movies might fall in more than one category. Let’s review each category in detail with examples.
- Masala Nepali movies
- New Age Nepali movies
- Nepali movies for youth
- B and C Grade Nepali movies
- Historical and Art Nepali movies
Masala Nepali movies
Masala Nepali movies contain all the different entertaining aspects of movies. They are the mix of comedy, family drama, action, music and love all stuffed in a movie to appeal all types of viewers. They might contain all these ingredients (masala) or some of them. These types of movies are less risky and hence, the established film producers prefer to go with these type of movies.
Sequel movies are produced to cash in the success of the original successful film. Another film, ‘Jholey’ team has announced the making of the sequel of the movie. The movie released last year was liked by the viewers and the producer Taken Khadka has decided that the viewers would like to follow the story in the new part. The director Dipendra K Khanal is reportedly busy in the preparation of the script of the film with the script writer Shan Basnet.
The sequel, ‘Jholey 2’ will feature Dayahang Rai, Priyanka Karki and A Gurung in leading role. A new actress will also debut in the film.

The story of the super hit movie of 2012, ‘Loot’ is written by the director, Nischal Basnet. The movie proved to be a relief at the time when the Nepali movie industry was going in a downward spirals. Actress and model Sushma Karki’s item dance ‘Undreko choli …’ established the actress as the hot actress in Nepali film industry. Most of the actors, new in the movie, are now well established actors in the industry and the movie represents a new start and the confidence of the Nepali film industry. Although 4 new Nepali movies were released on the day ‘Loot’ was released, the movie managed to become the top grossing movie of the year.
The National Film Award was held at the President’s residence, Shital Niwas. In the ceremony various awards were handed over to the movies released in the last four years.
After receiving the award of Best Actress for her role in ‘Masan’ Neeta Dhungana said, "National Award is not about nominations , popularity , lead role , or something its totally about the work that an artist does whether the artist has done side role or main role , 5 scenes or 50 scenes."
Nepali actress Sushma Karki is going to be featured in an upcoming movie named ‘Sakas’ with another hot actress Mahima Silwal. Wilson Bikram Rai will be supporting the actresses in the movie.
Nigam Shrestha debuted as a director in his upcoming movie ‘Chadke’, scheduled to release this Friday. He had worked as an assistant director in one of the most popular movies of modern time, ‘Loot‘ and has repeated some of the casts of the movie in his debut movie. Raunak Niraula had recently talked to Nigam about his movie:
Q – Tell us something about your first directed movie ”Chadke”.
Nigam Shrestha – ‘Chadke’ is a story of gangsters of Chitwan. ‘Chadke’ is a thriller movie and also related to environment of Nepal . In short ‘Chadke’ is a movie that is made to entertain the audiences.
A Nepali film award ceremony, 4th Filmykhabar Digital Film Award, organized by Chhaya Chhabi Creation, was held in Kathmandu on December 9, 2012. The best actor and best actress awards were handed over to Saugat Malla (for ‘Loot‘) and Rekha Thapa (for ‘Andaaz‘) respectively. Rekha’s ‘Andaaz’ was declared the best movie this year.
Other winners include Best Director – Ujjwal Ghimire for ‘Andaaz’, Best new actress – Binita Baral for ‘Chapali Height‘, Best New Actor – Samyam Puri for ‘Saayad‘. We will post the full list of winners in a separate post.
This time, there was an unlikely competition between a established producer and actor Bhuwan KC and a new entry actress Binita Baral. It was not only in changing their names on the suggestion of their respective astrologers, they also competed in creating controversies. And the unlikely winner was Binita Baral (we better call her Beenita Baral).
Nepali film industry is becoming more competitive these days. Established actors and actresses are facing hard time in remaining relevant in these days and the new actors and film makers are ruling our film industry. In this race, actor / producer, Bhuwan KC‘s attempt to make a comeback was not successful.
Our congratulation to Loot for it’s 51 days celebration on Friday, March 2, 2012 !
This year had been a bit different for Nepali film industry. There used to be a trend in our film industry that, a movie require star cast to be a hit. This year, neither Rajesh Hamal nor Rekha Thapa could ensure a good box office collection. At the same time, new director, new music director, and few struggling actors in ‘Loot‘ proved that a good movie doesn’t need star cast.
Yes, ‘Loot’ is still running in theaters and is extending its market to overseas too.
The fact that ‘Loot’ has become a hot cake topic among the film makers and movie goers left me wondering: is it such a wonderful movie? Should everybody watch it ?
The actor and producer Bhuwan KC is one of the well known personality in Nepali movie industry who doesn’t need an introduction. It was at the end of 2009 Bhuwan KC announced his son to be featured in Sathi Ma Timro. After almost a year, he realized Anmol need to focus more on studies than in acting. By the time Bhuwan was ready to release his movie, he sought suggestions from astrologer who suggested him to add a letter in his Name. That is reason behind Sathi ma Timro being presented by Bhuwann KC not Bhuwan KC.
At the time of release of his latest movie, Raunak has talked with Bhuwan for xNepali on various issues of his new movie:
Q. Tell us something about your upcoming project “Sathi ma Timro”?
Bhuwan – “Sathi ma Timro” is a story about a family in which, a 5 year kid Sirshak Sapkota has an important role. It is purely a family movie with some action, comedy, songs, and emotional scenes to cater the needs of Nepali movie viewers. In total, it is a family entertainment movie.
Q. In some interviews, you have said that after the release of this movie 60% producers of Nepali movies will leave this field. Does this movie contain the story of our film industry?
Bhuwan – Yes, this movie has a story of our film industry too. It’s a story of a father and son, it’s a story of a family which resemblances to many families of our society.
For the last two decades, Nepali film industry has been ruled by Rajesh Hamal and his craze hasn’t diminished to date. The new comer actors had tried to follow his path, but none have succeeded. Hamal represents masala types of movies with common ingredients like action, comedy, songs, and glamorous actresses.
After the release of "Sano Sansar" and "Kagbeni", Nepali movies had stepped in new direction creating a sharp contrast between the two groups of film makers.
Understanding Nepali film industry is not easy. I am confused when somebody asks about the strongest star-power actor in Nepali film industry. In fact, there is none! Neither Rajesh Hamal‘s action nor Rekha Thapa‘s exposure can be a sure-shot of success.
But, in case of Bhuwan KC, there seems to be a consensus among media people that, he makes movies that do good business. Although it might not be true for all the movies Bhuwan KC has done as an actor, but the movies he had produced so far had been successful commercially.
‘Loot‘ is a Nepali movie. It doesn’t cater the Bollywood flavor. Although the concept of item songs comes from Bollywood, and Loot has made a full use of it, that hasn’t ruined the Nepaliness in the movie.
The item song ‘Udhreko Choli’ and it’s popularity has helped in the marketing of the movie. But, that is not the whole story.Simplicity in story, the style of story telling, better than average acting, no nonsense scenes in the movie are some of the positive aspects in ‘Loot’.
