SLC exam starts in Nepal – 2 hours relief in load shedding

Nepal government has reduced the load shedding from 14 hours a day to 12 hours a day to let students appearing in the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination, starting from Thursday, March 24, 2011.

The SLC exam taken after grade ten is popularly termed as an Iron Gate for after it’s toughness and a door to higher education. Before plus two system was introduced about a decade back, SLC exam was the end of school and entry into university.

This year’s SLC statistics:

• Total exam days – 9
• Students – 496,243
• Exam centers – 1,672
• Regular examinees – 436,411
• Exempted examinees – 59,832 <

• Number of open schools – 89
• Students from open schools – 8,140 students (7,794 regular and 346 exempted)
• Highest number of students – 32,860 (Kathmandu)
• Least number of students – 122 (Manang)

Examiners:

• Total – 47,242 personnel
• Superintendents – 1,672
• Assistant superintendents – 2,395
• Invigilators – 19,843
• Peons – 6,612

The government effort to reduce cheating in the SLC exam has been very unsuccessful. This time Education ministry has promised to be strict in enforcing the law. The Education Act states that students breaching the exam code can fined up to Rs. 100,000 or jailed for six months or or both.

UPDATE:  On 23 August, 2010 the SLC board published the results of exempted examinees of the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) held August 15-27 this year. This was the supplementary examinations of those students, who failed in two or less subjects in the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) 2010. Out of the total of 137,752 students none got the distinction mark. The pass percentage however was an impressive 67.4% (67,930 students). The pass number of girls is also higher than that of boys (35,711 girls against 34,219 boys). Only 1,551 of the students got first division marks, 51,069 got second division marks, and remaining 17,310 got third division marks. Exam of 18 students was canceled.

SLC result for 2067 is out today (July 2, 2010). This year, a total of 456, 719 including 412,592 in regular and 44,126 in exempted, appeared in the SLC examination and out of which 64.31% (247,689) passed it.

67.31% of the regular student have passed the exams. A total of 16,859 secured distinction, 93,339 passed in first division, 1,28,75 in second division and 9,416 passed in third division.

Similarly, 29.18 percent student appearing in exempted examination made it through the Iron Gate. Of them, 416 passed in first division, 9,114 in second division and 2,617 in third division.

Kumari taking SLC examination (Photos)

Cheating in SLC

This girl is courageous enough to cheat in front of journalist’s camera. Reminds me of a post I posted earlier about the teachers cheating in their exam.

If teachers teach kids to cheat … I don’t blame the students cheating in exam.

SLC Board Firsts, historical record from 1991 to 2061 BS

School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination,  conducted to the students of grade 10 to determine if they are eligible for further studies, is going on in Nepal.

The exam used to be a benchmark on a school’s performance. The unhealthy competition among the private schools to get most number of students in the SLC board forced the government body to stop releasing the top 10 list of the students after 2061 Bikram Sambat (BS).
