* This feature article is a part of women in Nepali film industry series. Another article in this series is female writers in Nepali film industry. UPDATE on April 22, 2015: Dipa Basnet has directed another movie titled ‘Shree 5 Ambare’ and Samjhana Upreti has also directed her second movie ‘Falgu’. UPDATE on July 11, 2015: A new female director, Deepa Shree Niraula has announced a new movie titled ‘Chha Bhane Maya Chhapakai Laideu’ (an audio report attached at the end of this post).
The entry of female directors in Nepali film industry is very limited. There are two ways a director can start directing movies – one by working as an assistant director to an established director, two by completing direction studies. The entry of female directors in Nepali film industry is mostly by the second path. None of the female assistant directors so far have become a directors in Nepali film industry.
Watch a short video on the Female directors of the film industry:
The first female director in Nepali film industry is Suchitra Shrestha. She started as a film journalist and eventually became the director of ‘Prem Yuddha’.
Female film directors of Nepali film industry:
- Suchitra Shrestha – ‘Prem Yuddha’ (watch ‘Prem Yuddha’)

- Samjhana Upreti – ‘Megha’ and ‘Falgu’ (in post production)
- Dipa Basnet – ‘Antaral’ and ‘Shree 5 Ambare’
- Rekha Thapa – ‘Himmatwali’ (upcoming)
None of these directors have directed more than one movies yet. This statement is no longer true. Dipa Basnet’s second movie ‘Shree 5 Ambare’ is already released and Samjhana Upreti’s second movie, ‘Falgu’ is in post production.
The ‘Megha’ director Samjhana Upreti Rauniar is going to direct Rekha Thapa‘s next movie. The movie is also going to feature Saugat Malla in leading role. The shooting of the unnamed movie is scheduled to start in Chath festival.

Currently busy in ‘Tathastu’, Rekha is also working on ‘Himmatwali’, a movie scheduled to release in Dashain festival. Although Rekha directed ‘Himmatwali’ after the removal of the original director Shyam Bhattarai, Rekha should have realized directing is not her cup of cake.
In Nepali film industry, actress Rekha Thapa and Namrata Shrestha are known not to like each other. If a latest report is true, they seem to have sorted out the issues and are willing to work together in an upcoming project. The company that produced upcoming movie ‘Megha’, Sawasta Entertainment, is planning to feature Rekha, Namrata and Manisha’s brother Siddhartha Koirala in an unnamed movie.
We reported about the new development in easing the relationship between the two actress during Tihar celebration at Karishma Manandhar‘s house. Rekha and Namrata were seen together with Samjhana Upreti Rauniar, lighting fire crackers.
The Valentine Day is the most attractive time to release a love story movie. Actress Namrata Shrestha‘s most awaited movies ‘Megha’ and ‘November Rain’ are scheduled to release on the February 14 of 2014. Although ‘Megha’ was previously scheduled to release on January 31, now it is re-scheduled for the Valentine Day.
Releasing two movies of the same actress might not be a good business sense to either of the producers. That would cause in the division of viewership between the two movies.
