Soongava comes in DVD with Nepali and French subtitle

If you were not able to watch the popular lesbian love story movie ‘Soongava’ in theater, you can watch it now in the comfort of your home. The movie is now available in DVD.

In a program held in Thamel, ‘Soongava’ DVD was unveiled by film makers and artists. The DVD is released and marketed by Hi Tech Entertainment.

The film made on the controversial topic of a love story between two girls played by Nisha Adhikari and Diya Maskey. Other artists in the film include Saugat Malla, Laxmi Giri and Basundhara Bhusal. The movie is directed by Subarna Thapa.

‘Soongava’ couldn’t make it to the Oscars competition

The movie selected by the Nepali selection committee to represent Nepal in the Academy Awards, Oscars, couldn’t make it to the short-listing. The movie made on a lesbian love story, ‘Soongava’ was selected by a Nepali committee for the Oscars competition to compete in the Best Foreign Movie category.

The Oscars Awards organizer The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science has recently released the list of movies short-listed for the final competition. Nepali movie is  not in the list.

Soongava to release again in Kathmandu theaters

After being nominated to the Oscars Awards from Nepal, the movie is going to be re-released for the viewers who had missed during the previous screening. In the previous screening, it had faced lower than expected viewers.

According to the distributor, Eye Core Entertainment, the movie will be screened for 20 days with one show each day in Mandala Theater and multiplex theater in Kathmandu.

Soongava bagged a jury award in Italy Film Festival

A movie on the story of lesbian lover, "Soongava: Dance of the Orchids" has been a critically acclaimed movie appreciated by a lot of viewers. In a recent screening in Italy, the movie bagged a jury award in Italy Film Festival. The movie also created a buzz in in Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay film festival.

‘Soongava: Dance of the Orchids’ was selected to represent Nepal in Best Foreign Film category of Oscar Awards. Directed by Subarna Thapa, the movie features Deeya Maskey, Nisha Adhikari, Saugat Malla, Basundhara Bhusal in main roles. The movie is made on the tragic love story of social problems for the same-sex relationships in Nepal.

Soongava selected to participate in Oscars Awards

Nepali movie made on the love story of lesbian couple, ‘Soongava : dance of the orchids’ was selected to represent Nepal in the world’s most prestigious film awards, Oscars Awards. The movie will compete in the Best Foreign Movies category.

In the race to participate in the 86th Academy Awards ‘Soongava’, ‘Sanguro’, ‘Shirish ko Phool’ and ‘Badhshala’ were selected in the first step. A committee led by Bimal Poudel and having Laxminath Sharma, Pradeep Upadhaya, Raju Bikram Thapa and Lokendra Parajuli as members has selected ‘Soongava’ to go to the Awards.

2013 new releases – Soongava, Dhartiputra, and Afnai Manlai Sodhi Hera

‘Soongava’, ‘Dhartiputra’ and ‘Afnai Manlai Sodhi Hera’ are going to be the first three Nepali movies to be released on the new year 2013.

‘Soongava’ has been on headline from the beginning because of it’s lesbian theme. Subarna Thapa’s ‘Soongava’ features Nisha Adhikari and Diya Maskey in lead role. Saugat Malla, Laxmi Giri and Basundhara Bhusal also have important roles in the movie.Although the movie was successful in being featured in various film festival, there is a high chance that the majority of Nepali movie viewers miss the message.

Soongava selected in Chennai International Film Festival

Nepali movie ‘Soongava: Dance of the Orchids’ is recently selected for another prestigious Chennai International Film Festival, India. The movie will be premiered in the festival on December 18, 2012.

‘Soongava’ is a realistic film that depicts the conservative Nepali society in a very subtle and beautiful way. Although the Supreme Court of Nepal has legalized the existence of lesbians; traditional Nepali society is yet to accept their existence in practice. The movie presents the fact about the status of lesbians in Nepali society.

The movie previously participated in various film festivals like KIMFF Kathmandu; Hamburg Filmfest 2012, The world film festival- Montréal 2012, and International film festival of young Directors 9-13 oct. 2012 St. jean de Luz,France.

The movie written and directed by Subarna Thapa features Deeya Maskey, Nisha Adhikari, Saugat Malla, Bashundara Bhusal, Nirmal Nisar, Rajendra Man Shakya, Laxmi Giri and others.

'Soongava' premiered in KIMFF

On the last day of the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) 2012 Nepali movie ‘Soongava – Dance of the Orchids’ was premiered (Nepal premier) amongst various film and fashion personalities. The red carpet event was held in City Hall Kathmandu. The Subarna Thapa’s movie features actresses Diya Maskey and Nisha Adhikari in lead roles as lesbian lovers. The movie was previously named ‘Snow Flowers‘ and was released as ‘Soongava’.

‘Soongava’ will be released in theaters on Poush 20 (January 4, 2013). In addition to Nisha and Diya the also movie features Saugat Malla, Basundhara Bhusal, Sarita Giri, and Menuka Pradhan in main roles.    Continue reading

KIMFF starting on Dec 7, 'Soongava' to be premiered

The Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) 2012 is being organized from December 7 to December 11, 2012 in  City Hall (Rastriya Sabha Griha) / Nepal Tourism Board.  The festival will showcase more than 60 films from 28 countries in the world. The films include documentaries, fiction, short-films, animation, and experimental films. The event features interactive discussions, photography and alternative book exhibitions, and documentary workshop.

The ticket price of the festival is Rs. 50 per scree
ning (students pay half the price at Rs. 25 per screening). The tickets are available at the venue. One of the attraction of the festival is the Nepal premier of the first lesbian Nepali movie ‘Soongava: dance of the orchids’ by Subarna Thapa.
