Look mama, the Anonymous' next easy target

A group named #OpEverest, claiming to be a part of an international hacker network Anonymous, had recently attacked official website of Nepal Government, nepalgov.gov.np. One of the next targets of the group is the site of Nepali Congress – nepalicongress.org.

Usually DDos attacks last for hours (not days or months or years!). I wonder what the effect will be to the website that has been flagged by Google for about 6 months (may be longer) and the owner doesn’t even notice? Here is a screenshot posted in xNepali forum on December of 2010 (The site should have been like that for much longer).

For comparison, I have taken the screenshot now, the site hasn’t changed and the owner Nepali Congress doesn’t care either.

My suggestion to Anonymous or #OpEverest: these sites don’t compare with Amazon or Visa or MasterCard sites. You should better save your energy to be used for something worthwhile. p>

Grand Music Festival 2011 gone bad

This music festival was told to be grand in the history of Nepali music by the organizers.

  • First grand Music Festival with 16 artists in a single location
  • Two helicopters used to transport the artists
  • Ticket rate Rs. 150 and include a noodle, a juice, and a NTC discount of Rs. 50 (dirt cheap)

First, there weren’t many listeners. The area looked empty during the concert. The singers were also disappointed by the small number of people in the audience. Apart from less ticket sales, one another reason for the small crowd size is the relative size of Tundikhel area. I think, it is a huge area, only suitable for political meets where people can come and ‘have fun’ for free.

Tough daily routine… to School

The kids in cities take it for granted, but their friends in remote parts of Nepal face numerous difficulties to go to school.

These high school students are from a Buddhaseen Village. They have to cross the river as seen in the photo above to reach their school and come back home in the evening the same way.

This photo by Kapil Dev Khanal was awarded first prize in news photo this year (this and other nice photos in Nagariknews).

Traffic accidents in Nepal in rising trend

Analysis of 18 years of data starting from FY 049/050 to FY 066/067, shows that traffic accidents in Nepal is in rising trend. This demands something concrete to be done to improve traffic safety in Nepal

The data shows an alarming reality of commuters in Nepal that not much is done in improving traffic safety over these years. Concerned authorities should do something to reduce these accidents.

It’s not only the total number of accidents, serious accidents and fatality resulting from such accidents is also in increasing trend.

There was a little bit of decrease in accidents during 2061-063. But, that too might be attributed to the banda and strikes done almost every now and then. (Data by SI-Dipendra Pradad Sah, Metropolitan Traffic Police, Nepal)

US newspaper deleted Clinton's photo to 'appreciate' women

An American Jewish newspaper says that it doesn’t publish images of women in its newspaper. The Brooklyn weekly went as far as doctoring the photo that shows US President Barack Obama and his staff monitoring the raid by Navy SEALs that killed Osama bin Laden.

Two females in the photo – Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Counterterrorism Director Audrey Tomason were deleted from the photo before printing it.

The weekly, Di Tzeitung is published in Yiddish, and is sold at the newsstands in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg and Borough Park. The original photo of the situation room is
posted below:

The newspaper released a statement to apologize the mistake :

Our photo editor realizing the significance of this historic moment, published the picture, but in his haste, did not read the "fine print" that accompanied the picture, forbidding any changes and published a picture omitting the female participants in the room.

Our editorial policies are guided by a Rabbinical Board and because of laws of modesty, does not allow for the publishing of photos of women. The readership of the Tzeitung believe that women should be appreciated for who
they are and what they do, not for what they look like, and the Jewish laws of modesty are an expression of respect for women, not the opposite.

The allegations by some, that Orthodox Judaism denigrates women or do not respect women in public office,is a malicious slander and libel. The Jewish religion does not allow for discrimination based or gender, race, etc.

The full statement can be read in the website of the newspaper – ditzeitung.com
