What would be more shameful than being made fool by the person one has elected?
That is what is happening in Nepal, and it has already been the 16th time the one, and the only one candidate for the post of Prime Minister, Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Poudel, has been defeated in the election. He was left alone in the never winning race since Maoist Chairman, Puspa Kamal Dahal, withdrew his candidacy after realizing the infinite loop the election was going through.
Today is Kartik 27, 2067. For those who live on November 14, 2010, a date with year 2067 seems like a date in future.
We have our own unique dating system, Bikram Era (BS) but, almost all the rest of the world has a common and widely popular dating system, AD. As, the ‘global village’ only understand AD we need to convert our own BS to AD in every aspects of our lives. I used to go to some date converter websites to do the conversion for me but now the process has become much simpler with the availability of smart phones. I have found an App in Apple iTunes very useful in this aspect. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch running iOS 4.0 or higher, you can download the application for free.
Developers note:
Do you live abroad and sometime wonder today’s date or when is the “Holi”, what’s the festival around the corner ? Do you think twice about time in Nepal before calling home? Now you don’t have to, “There’s an app for that”. You can download “Nepali Calendar” for iPhone and iPod from iTunes app store. Further details can be obtained from the developer’s website.
Main features of the App are:
current date/time and list of upcoming holidays/festivals in the main tab
month by month calendar with both Nepali and English date
date conversion utility that convert from BS to AD and vice-versa
foreign exchange rate with graph of exchange rate history for last 30 days.
It was back in May 18 of 2006, Nepal was pronounced a secular state and was no longer the ‘only Hindu nation in the world’. But, a news published on Nov. 5 in Kantipur and Himalayan Times implies that Nepal is still a ‘Hindu Kingdom’ in practice.
A Muslim from Siraha, Eastern Nepal, Mohammad Sabir, was arrested on charges of selling cow meat. Muslims don’t worship cows, and the "New Nepal" respects every religions.
Then, why is a Muslim arrested for selling cow meat? Is it only because Hindu (80% of the population) don’t eat it? Well, Muslims don’t eat pigs. Does that mean butchers selling pig meat should be arrested ?
… why is our government so worried about P-rn-Watchers’-pillars-of-the-nation? How about minding their own business & drafting Constitution on time?
Those were some of the responses to the ‘internet black list,’ the Nepal government prepared, with so much enthusiasm and dedication! In the previous post, I had given enough examples on what ‘the list’ was made up of. The six out of the first ten websites were no-brainier bull-sh*ts !
Let’s go through the remaining list:
Site No. 12 – This website features some magazine but, I couldn’t find any graphic materials in there. I didn’t bother to read the content (and, I am more than confident that none of the decision makers of the list did read it!). The only apparent reason, the site falls in the list is that there is a taboo word in the title.
Everybody must have laughed their hearts out while going through the first list of blocked websites in Nepal. Then came the second, updated list.
While going through the first 10 websites in the list, I found 6 out 10 sites were wrongly listed. You can guess what the rest of the list might look like (and, it is the second updated list)! I will do the remaining review later.
Second website in the list – is a parked domain. Hey, it is full of ads and nothing in it and it is blocked because the domain name is not decent-enough!
Rajesh Hamal has responded to various media reports accusing him to be irresponsible towards the health of general public. The allegation is the result of an advertisement featuring Real Juice. A consumer advocate group had also asked the government to investigate the involvement of Rajesh Hamal, Karishma Manandhar, Dipak Bista, and Min Bahadur Gurung in the advertisement of tainted product.
The movie ‘Jangbaaz’ is a presentation of Salon Film, by the son of the director Salon Basnet. A child son of Shovit, Salon, was just named the producer. He is later featured as a actor in ‘Hostel’ and other movies. Continue reading
UPDATE: Both Nov. 2 and Nov 9 parts added.comedy – Sugandhapur (सà¥à¤—नà¥à¤§à¤ªà¥à¤°)
This is a Television serial and we will update this post regularly. Starring – Hari Bansha Acharya , Madan Krishna Shrestha and Raja Ram Poudel.
They did a good job of promoting some sites like Huffington Post, or sfsi (I had never heard of them before!) with the explicit websites ban list. Now, thanks to the wide-spread protest, the government has updated the list to remove non-relevant and add more sites like Playboy.
You might have expected the government had felt the shame and has done a good homework to update the new list. You are wrong! They are far from being serious in including the relevant sites in the updated list. Continue reading
Grow-up Nepal Government !(borrowed from a Facebook page against internet ban).
In response to the criticism, the Nepali government has updated the internet ban list by removing ‘non-explicit’ sites and adding some more sites in the list.
Removed from the previous list are huffingtonpost.com, sites of music band Sex Pistol, Healthguru, Springer, Mahalo and other sex awareness sites.
In the updated list, Playboy is among the other sites added. There were only 53 sites in the previous list and the new list features 56 sites. Here is the full list:
A consumer advocate group has asked the government to investigate the involvement of actor Rajesh Hamal, actress Karishma Manandhar, sportsperson Dipak Bista, and businessman Min Bahadur Gurung for appearing in the advertisements of the controversial drink Real Juice.
It was told that Rajesh Hamal received a whooping Rs. 1.2million to be featured in the ad. That is, 3-4 times the amount he receives for acting in a full movie. Others should have received a smaller but considerable sum to act for the ads.
I knew it from the beginning ! I was the first person to tell that the government plan was flawed!
Nepali Times published the full list of websites banned in Nepal by the government. It was surprising to find ‘huffingtonpost.com’ and ‘sexpistolsofficial.com’ included in the the 60 sites blocked in Nepal. Continue reading
Ncell’s 3G network in the Mt. Everest area has made the top of the world easily accessible by the mobile network. The mobile station is located at 5,200 meter above the sea level. The new service is expected to help the Tourism Year 2011 in the positive way.
It has only been a month since Ncell started 3G services in Nepal. The service was established in association with TeliaSonera Mobile Networks. TeliaSonera has also setup a 3G network in a mine in Sweden some 1,400 m below the sea level.
Mobile network Mero Mobile was renamed Ncell on 12th March 2010. Ncell is the only company offering 3G network and BlackBerry mobile sets in Nepal.
It was much easier in the olden days when the Government controlled everything. The equation has changed drastically with the recent advancement in communication and electronics. The phone, newspapers, radio, movies, television, post letters were much easier to control. In this internet-age, although all of these services can now be embraced in a single device, a computer; it is much more difficult to control.
There are always problem when government seeks control on one of these communication media. Countries like US and China are effectively controlling these media but, when it comes to the poor countries, like Nepal, it is not that easy.
The recent attempt of the Nepali government to control internet can be seen as one of the desperate attempts to control communication of its citizen. The only, and the most palatable front to start internet control was "public decency and courtesy" issue. They know, society can digest the argument and there will be less resistance on such control. The idea however is not original, and was widely practiced during the 1980s feminists and conservatives’ attempt to raise the issues of morality and public safety. Their argument, hard-core erotica promotes sexual violence against women, was proved to be flawed! In a paper (download pdf) presented at Stanford Law School, Clemson University economist, Todd Kendall, suggest that p0rn sites help potential rapists to relieve their sexual urges and do less crimes. Meaning, such sites actually decreases sexual violence.
