Nepali Movies, Looking Back to 2010 (Part 2)

Continued from the First Part – Nepali Movies, Looking Back to 2010 (Part 1)

After two years in release queue, Didi Bhai of Sunil Manadhar was finally released this year. A family drama and action movie was liked by a lot of viewers. Fans of Rajesh Hamal, his dialogue delivery, and action have appreciated this movie.

The musical blockbuster movie Nai Nabhannu La, directed by Bikash Acharya, also did a good business inside and outside of Kathmandu valley.

After a long absence from Nepali movie arena, director Naresh Paudyal released Deepsikha. This movie was more focused on the fact that actress Arunima Lamsal was the scriptwriter in the promotion that making it a better movie. The only thing that was successful about ‘Deepsikha’ was the promotional song of this movie. The movie failed big time.

Movies released during Dashain, Baandi and Bidaai also couldn’t do the business as expected. In Tihar, Rekha Thapa released, Kasle Choryo Mero Man,featuring Aryan Sigdel and herself. This movie was successful in winning the hearts of Rekha Thapa fans. In contrast to her usual trend in wearing short skirts and exposure, Rekha was seen covering her body in this movie. The presentation and the music of the movie were the strength of the movie. A rumor of disagreement between Rekha and Aryan was suspected to be the promotion stunt during the release of the moive.

The movie Timi Matrai Timi, featuring Jharana Thapa, Raj Ballav Koirala, and directed by Yogesh Ghimire was another most awaited movie of the year. The movie couldn’t do a good business in spite of the story and presentation being new in Nepali cinema.

Two releases from Gopi Krishna Movie- Flash Back- Farkera Herda and Khushi also couldn’t leave any good impression in the market.

The first movie of Indian Idol, Prashant Tamang, Gorkha Paltan, did better than expected business. Before its release, hopes were low at first, but it did an unexpected business outside Kathmandu. The business it did within Kathmandu was moderate.

The most talked about movies of the year, Dharmaa, featuring Manisha Koirala and Haasi Deu Ek Phera, featuring MaHa duo couldn’t keep up to the hype and publicity.

Almost everyone was sure of the success of MaHa’s movie but the the result was opposite. In spite of a good story and presentation, the movie couldn’t run more than a week in many theaters. The viewers expect comedy from the comedy duo, but the movie proved to be too serious to be taken lightly. Manisha Koirala’s Dharma live up to the expectation of the viewers and couldn’t do business as expected. With this movie Manisha Koirala failed to capture the Nepali market as expected by many.

Singer Yash Kumar’s Bato Muni Ko Phul got a very good response and reviews from media but, failed to cast magic in the theatres. Krisha Chaulagain’s Kasam Hajurko also couldn’t win the hearts of the viewers. Kasam Hajurko did an average business. Himmat sequel Himmat: 2 was also an average release without much success outside of the valley.

Apart from the movies mentioned, more movies were released in theaters but, their influence in the market was minimal and the viewers didn’t notice them at all. The year was crowded with a lot of movies announced and lot of releases. As far as the presentation and direction is concerned, we can safely assume that the trend is in positive side. But, none of the releases this year have created a long lasting impression on the movie goers. One of the most important thing to be noted is that our film makers are still in dark on what types of movies Nepali audience like. They are still throwing stones in dark and expecting it to hit on the target.

I hope, coming year will bring lots of movies which we can be proud of.  My best wishes to all the producers, directors, actors, actress, and music directors for the success of their movies.

Happy New Year 2011 to all of you!
