Scenes of 'The Last Kiss' scissored – still not suitable for younger audience

The censor board of Nepal was not happy with the content of a movie known for vulgar dialogue and excessive sex scenes. The Nepali movie, ‘The Last Kiss’, named after a 2006 Hollywood movie is told to be full of kiss scenes, bed scenes, and vulgar dialogues.

We have posted the censor certificate of the movie in our Nepali blog in which, the certificate mentions two ‘vulgar’ words to delete. It also mentions a ‘kiss scene to delete’ and a scene in which ‘a tent is shown
shaking’ is to be deleted as well.

Even after the deletion of these scenes, the movie is still not considered to be suitable for the 16 year-olds and youngers. The movie features Puskar Jung Thapa and Shovita Simkhada in leading roles.

Nepal Bandha affecting Movie releases

A number of movies scheduled to be released in the weeks ahead have postponed because of political uncertainty in the days ahead. At the time when the constitution is to be released (it is scheduled to be released on Jestha 14) various political parties have beefed up their demand and power shows. Frequent closure of businesses and transportation as a mean of protest, commonly named "Nepal Bandha" have affected the lives of every Nepali. Every sector including education, business, entertainment and public sector have been affected by frequent Nepal Bandha these days.  Let’s talk about the cancellation of the release of a some of most awaited and hopeful Nepali movies because of Nepal bandha.

Today, on May 5, 2012, ‘Saayad’ is being released in theaters across Nepal.  But, due to Nepal Bandha its release in theaters outside the valley was postponed. Although the release in Kathmandu valley is going on as schedule, it is a bitter start as all the theatres are closed on the first day of it’s release.

The producer of ‘Apabad,’ a movie scheduled to be released on Jestha 5 (May 18), has decided it is not the right time for the release and postponed the release date. The producer of ‘Apabad’, Susan Prajapati, has told that the release of the movie in USA and Australia will however be on the scheduled date. Release in Nepal will only be decided based on the political situation in the country.

Similarly Pradip Uday, the producer of ‘Malatiko Bhatti’ has also announced the cancellation of the release of the movie previously scheduled to release on Jestha 12 (May 25).

‘Saayad’, ‘Apabad’, and ‘Malati Ko Bhatti’ were waiting for their release for a long time and at the final stage the release is affected by ‘Nepal Bandha‘. We hope, the political turmoil won’t affect the recent revival of the Nepali movie industry.

Should 'Jannat 2' be banned in Nepal?

No, we don’t think so!

Nepali film critics and Film Development Board of Nepal think that a Bollywood movie "Jannat2" be banned in Nepal. The movie shows a scene about illegal weapons being supplied from Pakistan to India through Nepal. The censor board however hasn’t found anything fishy on the scene and has permitted the movie to be shown in Nepal.

In the modern time, some critics think censoring a movie in itself is a questionable practice. Censoring or banning a movie only on the fact that Nepal is shown to be a  transit point of some weapon doesn’t qualify as an issue to
be given of much importance. We all know the lack of proper security in our transit point. Hiding the truth doesn’t solve problem.

We have a few questions to the people who think the movie should be banned:

  • Does banning a movie based on one of it’s scene based on a fiction plot give a good message?
  • Shouldn’t the government learn from such movies and try to stop such practices, if any?
  • Do everything shown in a movie is true ? If it can be untrue, why debate on it?
