Movie review – Nepali Movie ‘Saayad’

This is the post-release review of Nepali movie ‘Saayad’ released on May 11, 2012. Pre-release review of ‘Saayad’ was posted on May 9, 2012.

It was a bitter start – ‘Saayad’ was released on the ‘Nepal Bandha’ day. It is currently being screendd in various theaters inside Kathmandu valley and in a few parts outside Nepal. As already discussed on our pre-review review, ‘Saayad’ is a story about the youths of plus-two, their drug indulgence and how their life changed because of drugs. The movie directed by Suraj Subba ‘Nalbo’ features Sunil Rawal, Samyam Puri, Wilson Bikram Rai, and Jharana Thapa in leading roles.

Story:

The movie ‘Saayad‘ is the story of two brothers Yodin (played by Samyam Puri) and Nirag (played by Sunil Rawal). After Yodin was born, their family had earned wealth and their life became more easier so Nirag considers Yodin a luck. Yodin’s crush, Sirish, was the sister of Nirag’s crush, Samridhi. Yodin’s best friend Ved (played by Wilson Bikram Rai) introduced Yodin to drugs. Yodin and Ved’s group started taking drugs because of the problems in the family and love lives.

Drugs caused them to neglect their study and get involved in gang fights. The story takes a u-turn when Sirish died. It is better to keep from telling, all about how Sirish died and how their lives changed after her death, not to spoil your movie experience in the theatre.

Strength and Weakness:

Good acting is one of the most important aspect of a good movie and Suraj Subba has understood the fact well.  The actors have performed very well and done justice to their respective roles. The direction of Suraj Subba Nalbo is also appreciable. He has used proper location for the proper situation and has presented college life and student’s fun in a natural way.

The story of the movie is short and simple but, it takes and hour to enter inside the core of the story. The real story starts only after interval. The first half has a number of flaws and some plots seem disjointed and unrelated to the main story. It seems, the story is unnecessarily stretched in the first part, although it is not that boring.

In the screenplay, Suraj Subba has missed the emotional part. In the first part, Yodin loves Sirish very much but, suddenly after the interval he starts hurting her for no reasons. The incident involving Yodin and Sirish in the second half misses to touch the heart of audiences.

Cinematography of Sanjay Lama is appreciable. A song by Shadows band titled ‘Saayad’ is good and other song are average. Background music by Mohit Munal is good. Script and dialogues of Suraj Subba ‘Nalbo’ is good. He has used appropriate dialogues reflecting the situation and people.

Star Cast:

The lead actors of the movie have done a very good work. The lead actor, Samyam Puri, has done very well in his debut movie. As an innocent drug addict, he has performed very well. His dialogue delivery is good and it doesn’t make you feel like it is his first movie. He has a good future in Nepali film industry. Another important character, Ved, played by Wilson Bikram Rai. He has done an excellent work and he is the only character in the entire movie to entertain the audience. Wilson’s facial expression, body language and dialogue delivery is appreciable.

Jharana Thapa’s role is average and there is nothing new and fresh to expect from her. Sunil Rawal has also done justice to his role in his debut movie. As surprise appearance, Baboo Bogati and Karishma Manandhar can also be seen in screen for a short role. Although Babo Bogati’s role doesn’t have any significant part in the movie’s story, he has done a very good work.

Conclusion:

‘Saayad’ is one of the most awaited movies of this year and it and it won’t disappoint the audiences. Although the movie can do a good business, more was expected from Suraj Subba ‘Nalbo’. One thing is sure, this is a good Nepali movie and one will love the performance of the actors and especially Wilson Bikram Rai will surely entertain.
