RIP Robin Tamang

It is a sad news of the passing of a legendary singer of Nepal, Robin Tamang. Born to a British Army family in Singapore as the youngest of five siblings. Because of his father’s posting in various countries his family had to move from country to countries till he was 17 years old. He lived in Singapore, Brunei and Hong Kong. He did his schooling in Singapore where he was influenced by the rock singers Jimmy Hendrix and Deep Purple. During his school years he started his first band and titled “F Troop”. The band performed in school.

He later went to study in a college in Canada in the mid 80s. During Humber College of Toronto days, he formed his second band and named it Tamang. The band performed in different stage shows.

It was in 1966 that he got the chance to go back to Nepal and settle. His father lived in Pokhara and he joined a band titled ‘Looza’ in Pokhara. They performed in various places and did stage shows. In 2005 the band disbanded. Robin Tamang continued to perform with other group of musicians and formed another band and named it Robin and the New Revolution. The group had Robin in lead vocal with Rajesh on Drums, Dipesh on guitar and Prabin on bass. The first album of the band was titled ‘Keta Keti’. The album became a huge hit.

Apart from music, Robin was also a very good actor. He had acted in a number of Nepali movies including ‘Chhadke”. He used to say that acting and music are both linked to human emotion hence expressing them just comes naturally to him.

Born in – 1963, Robin was 59/60 years old. He was born to Nepali parents in Bukit Timah, Singapore. He died on July 4, 2023.
