The 19 year-old Miss Global 2011, Lama, received Rs. 30,000 in cash, a Scooty and a scholarship of $700 to study in foreign country. The first runner-up received Rs. 20,000 in cash, and a scholarship of $500 to study in foreign country. Miss Global started last year awarding the crown to Selina Moktan as the first Miss Global 2010. Last year the crown winner had received a Lifan motorbike and a cash prize. The contest was organized by Model Global Visas.
Foreign study scholarship is a new and controversial prize given to any beauty contest winner. Such a prize give some wrong impression to the youth in the country like:
- Everybody should go to a foreign country for further study.
- Higher education in Nepal is not good
- A foreign study is very cheap (But, a scholarship of $700 won’t even pay a month’s rents in most of the western world)
