1st Miss Nepal 2019 contestant from Purwanchal is Pooja Shrestha

Congratulation to Pooja Shrestha, a resident of Jhapa, for being the first Miss Nepal 2019 contestant from the Eastern Nepal by winning the Miss Purwanchal 2018 title at the program held almost at the end of the year 2018. It would have looked better if it were held after January 1 instead of December 30 so that the title would read Miss Purwanchal 2019 instead of 2018.

Anyways, Pooja has been lucky enough to represent the East Nepal in the Miss Nepal contest to be held in a few months. Pooja got direct entry to the contest according to the agreement with the organizer of Miss Nepal contest, The Hidden Treasure.

The representative from Pokhara will be Miss Pokhara and Miss Chitwan will also represent Chitwan to the Miss Nepal contest.

17th years – Everything about the Royal Massacre (June 1, 2001)

An army staff at Narayanhiti Lal Bahadur Lamteri claimed that Crown Prince Dipendra was the one who was killed before everybody else in the June 1, 2001. Lamteri’s claim that Prince Paras brought a person wearing a Dipendra look-alike mask. But, whole account of Lamteri doesn’t seem convincing.  The official report of the government probe commission had accused Dipendra for the killing. The report in itself is unbeilable and unreliable.

Whoever did it, the royal family member was left with only the family of Gyanendra. Those who didn’t survive the night include:

Nepali Women are Slimming Up to show off at the New York Nepali Ladies Night

Nepali women in New York, USA are going to meet on June 2, 2018 at Belozino Hall in Jackson Height. This is a yearly event in which Nepali-American women come together to celebrate womanhood. The event help to build stronger relationship between them and is also an opportunity to showcase their talents.

According to the organizers, the Nepali Ladies Sanjh is “the most entertaining Nepali women night out signature yearly program for the Ladies and by the Ladies.”

Like previous years, Nepali ladies will showcase their talents on stage. According to the organizers, Nepali ladies have been preparing for the event for a long time. Some of them have been dieting and doing a lot of exercise to show off their fit and attractive bodies. One of the participants has claimed that she has lost 14 pounds for the event.

The organizers have been using the proceeds from the event for social works in Nepal and USA. In 2013 they had helped Sabika Thapa for her kidney transplant. In 2014 Prasa Tuladhar of New York was helped in her lungs treatment. In 2017 the the Gorkhaland movement victims were helped.

Nepali Beauty Contests in USA, Australia, UK and Hong Kong

There are a lot of beauty contests held in Nepal. The trend has extended beyond the Nepali border as Nepali people settle in various countries in the world. Beauty contests are held among young girls.

Popularity of Beauty Contest

Most of these beauty contests are held for the personality development and starting career in entertainment industry. The sudden rise in the number of beauty contests in Nepal can be attributed to the business aspect of the contests. These contests are usually held by training institutes, education institutes, and event managers. They train young girls and test their qualification by organizing the contests. It has also become a platform for young girls in various stages of their lives. For example, there used to be a beauty contest among girls appearing in SLC examination – Miss SLC. Similarly Miss College, Miss Plus Two were also held.

As Nepali people migrate to other countries and their children grow young, similar trend has also started in foreign countries. Beauty contests among Nepali girls in foreign countries are:

  • Miss Hong Kong Nepal

Opportunity to participate in Miss Nepal US 2018

The organizer of the beauty contest among Nepali girls in USA, Miss Nepal US 2018, have called for the application. The event to be held on August 19, 2018 is being organized among girls of Nepali origin living in the USA.

All Nepali girls of age between 19 and 29 can participate in the contest. The contest is organized by Event Planet Inc in association with E-Planet Pvt. in Nepal. This is the sixth edition of the beauty contest.

The organizer, Amit Shah, has told that the event is being organized to empower youth and promote Nepal. The first edition of the beauty contest was held in 2011 at New York. In the first edition, Sujita Basnet of Washington DC, had won the title.

The winner of Miss Nepal US 2018 will be awarded $5,000 education scholarship and other prizes.

$581k raised in Colorado, USA saptaha by Dinbandhu Pokharel

A saptaha was organized among the Nepali people living in Colorado, USA in an effort to build a community centre for the Nepali and Bhutanese of Nepali origin. The saptaha held from April 28 to May 5 raised an amount in excess of $581k. The money was collected as the donation from the people living in the area.

Dinbandhu Pokharel is known as an excellent orator who inspire people with money to donate for a noble cause. He has been active in raising fund for the construction of schools, colleges, hospitals and other social works.

Although some question his tactics of inspiring people to donate money as manipulative, those who donate do so happily. He uses the storytelling to inspire people to do something so that they are remembered by others in the world. He uses the mortality as an excuse and donation to help them become immortal.

Samragyee and Pradeep Khadka most popular actors at FAAN Award (watch winning films)

Popular actors among the youth, Pradeep Khadka and Samragyee RL Shah were awarded the Star of the Year at the FAAN Award 2073. This was the second edition of the film award ceremony organized by Film Artists Association of Nepal. In last year’s award, actor Anmol KC was awarded the artist of the year award.

Prime minister KP Sharma Oli had handed over the award certificated to the winners in an event held in Kathmandu on March 30, 2018.

Samragyee’s upcoming movie ‘Timi Sanga’ is releasing on Chaitra 23 and ‘Lily Billy’ of Pradeep Khadka is releasing the next week, on Chatria 30. After receiving the award Pradeep Khadka waited for Samragyee to receive her award and they posed together asking the photographers to take their photos.

Salman Khan’s Controversial concert Da-Bangg the Tour Nepal re-scheduled

The controversial tour of Salman Khan, Da-Bangg has been re-scheduled from March 10 to some time in April. That was caused by protest from a Maoist group – the Biplav- Maoist faction. The group had threatened the concert organizers of promoting Indian artists instead of promoting Nepali artists.

According to the organizer, ODC Entertainment, the tour was canceled because of a ‘special reason’. In the statement in Facebook, the organization has told that they have already spent Rs. 100 million for the event to cost an estimated sum of Rs. 150,000,000. Salman Khan is reportedly paid Rs. 50 million in advance for the concert. The date however is yet to be finalized for the concert.

The organizers have told that those who had bought the tickets to the event, will be able to use it for the show in the new date. In the meantime, ticket sell is continuing.

What happened in Kanchhi Musical Night?

Shweta Khadka organized a musical night titled ‘Kanchhi Musical Night’ for the fund raising of the Majhi Basti, being constructed in Sindhupalchowk. The residential area is being developed by Shweta Shree Foundation, a foundation registered in memory of actor Shree Krishna Shresta. Shree had died a month after marrying Shweta.

In the event organized in Annapurna Hotel in Durbar Marg, senior choreographer, Basanta Kumar Shrestha was given Rs. 51,000 and life-time achievement honour. In the event the members of Shweta Shree Foundation, various film artists and ‘Kanchhi’ film team. There were a total of about three hundred guests.

25-year-olds can also apply for Miss Nepal 2018, 2 Additional audition destinations,

The application for the biggest beauty contest in Nepal, Miss Nepal, is going to be held among the contestants to be selected by various auditions in different cities in the country. The Audition will start from Magh 21 and will end on 27 (February 4 to February 10) in eight different cities. The auditions are going to be held in Dhangadi, Nepalgujng, Butwal, Pokhara, Birgunj, Biratnagar, Dharan and Birtamod. The last audition will be held on Falgun 5 (February 17, 2018) in Kathamndu. Birgunj and Birtamod are two additional cities the auditions that will also host auditions for Miss Nepal 2018, this year.

20 to 25 candidates will be selected at the auditions and they will go through 7 weeks of training before the finale to be held on April 11, 2018 on Hotel Annapurna.

What are the requirements of the contestants?

Like last year, the requirements of the contest are similar. Unlike last year, this year girls of age 25 can also apply. Until last year, the maximum age for the applicant was 24-years.

After 22 years, Prachanda celebrated Dashain, why?

The CPN Maoist chief, Puspa Kamal Dahal, Prachanda celebrated Dashain for the first time in 22 years. He took Dashain tika in his residence in Lazimpat. He also offered tika to his wife, Sita Dahal. Sita offered tika to her children, grand children and other relatives. According to the son of Prachanda, Prakash Dahal, Prachanda took tika from his mother’s maternal uncle.

Prakash wrote in his Facebook – “More than a religious festival, Dashain is an opportunity to meet the relatives, social gathering.” He adds, “We respect Dashain as much as we respect religion.”

Like the previous years, Prachanda however didn’t offer tika to anybody else expect his wife, Sita Dahal. Prakash said, “Like previous years, dad didn’t offer us the tika. We took tika from the mom’s hand. In the previous Dashain, we used to take tika from mom.”

Why now, what changed Prachanda?

Prachanda used to advocate against Dasain festival being a religious event, not good for the low income and low caste Nepali people. After starting civil war and making himself one of the most powerful person in the country, he has changed his stance on the celebration. Why is that? Why did Prachanda back up after more than two decades of not celebrating Dashain?

Happy Dashain 2017

The biggest festival of Nepal, Dashain, has started on September 21, 2017. The first day of Dashain, Ghatasthapana is celebrated by Nepali all over the world. The 10-days worship of Goddess Durga has started in various temples and at homes in Nepal.

Let me go through the the major festive days of Dashain:

Day 1 – Ghatasthapana

The first day of Dashain starts with placing a water pot (Kalash) that symbolizes goddess Durga. The Kalash is filled with holy water and is covered with cow dung with some barley seeds added to it.

On the day, barley seeds are used to plant Jamara (wheatgrass). The plantation is done according to Hindu rituals and worshiping. Astrologers determine a specefic auspicious time to perform the ritual. It is believed that the goddess resides in the vessel (Kalash) during navratri.

The room where the ritual is performed is known as the Dashain Ghar where outsiders and women are not allowed, traditionally. In the past, it was a custom of a male family member, usually the head of the house, to worships the Kalash twice every day, once in the morning and then in the evening. But, these days, the discrimination has been ended and women are also allowed to perform the puja of the woman goddess, Durga. The Jamara plantation is kept in dark and holy water is offered every day to the seeds. By the tenth day the seed will grown to five to six inches long. The grass kept in total dark are yellow and is considered a sacred grass used with Tika on the 10th day of the festival.

Nempa Film Awards 2017, another film award in the USA (nominations)

After Global Films Award 2017 held a while ago, another Nepali film award is scheduled to be held on September 17. The award by Nepal Chalchitra Sangh, top 3 nominations were recently released. The award ceremony is scheduled to be held at Dallas, Texas.

A total of 45 movies, about half of the movies released last year, had applied to participate in the award. The nominations were prepared by evaluating the application. Award Joke – Anmol KC and Keki win best actors awards in the USA

Another Nepali film award was held in the USA – titled Global Nepali Film Award. It was the second edition of the award. Like other awards held in Europe and USA, many film artists were denied visa. Those who had previous visa to the USA and those who got visa this year participated and won the awards. Such award winning actors include Anmol KC who got the visa this time. Actor Dayahang Rai and others were denied visa and didn’t become “best actors”. Similarly, actress Keki Adhikari was awarded Best Actress for her role in ‘Love Sasha’.

‘Chhakka Panja’ was awarded the Best Film award. Actress and director Deepa Shree Niraula became the best director for the movie. Actor Tika Pahadi was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. Others awarded the Achievement Awards include Arjun Jung Shahi and Suwarna Chhetri.
