This is the answer to the question, “How to decide what video to do ?”
How to do the data analysis to decide on the topic of the next video based on the previous video performance. This is more about the inspiration and opportunities based on the data YouTube provides.
Three things should be analyzed:
- Market Research
- Audiance
- Competition
Market Research is a huge field. For our video needs there are specific things to look out for – Google Trend is one place to look for, past videos that work is another thing, and asking them directly is the best of them all.
All the data are available in the Analytics and internet. It is just the method on how to understand it.
– What is in demand? Once the topic is found second question is:
– Is there a desire for such type of content? Are people already searching for it?
This data analysis gives a basis of expectations about how the video is going to perform in long run. . It also gives an idea about the size of the potential audience.
Two types of contents:
1) an established interest – something people are already watching and know what they want.
2) creating an original content not available, and creating a new interest
Creating a new interest might take some time but, have a potential of being longer life and unique content.
Source of info:
1) Google Trends, is a very powerful public tool to compare interest in different topics and sizes.
2) Asking the viewers directly by posting in the community tab or in comment section.
YouTube also has some experimental search feature that help identify the interest in a given topic – in YouTube Analytics.
To know the potential audience size:
– Search similar videos in YouTube and analyze their view counts.
To understand the demand contents with higher viewership are more popular and people are looking for such stuffs.
Create a typical audience profile
– What would they enjoy?
– What would they love?
For the data, the audience tab in Analytics is the best place to start collecting information.
The other videos and the other’s channels the audience is watching is a very good indication of their interest. Watching at the demographic age, country, device type gives a lot more insight into a typical viewer.
– How do viewers watch YouTube (device)
– Why are they watching the videos (for entertainment, information or some specific topics)
For example I am creating stories videos.
– First, what type of people are watching stories.
– Are they watching comedy, social stories, historical information, news?
– What time they are watching ? Night, Morning, days?
– Why are they watching – just for entertainment, bed-time-stories, or to tell them to their kids?
– Are the teachers (experts) or just layman.
Competition is important
– what other videos are there in YouTube
– Are viewers watching the competitors’ videos?
– What are the gaps in them. Are there any opportunities?
For this, one should watch a lot of YouTube videos. All the related videos should be analyzed. Another option is to watch previous videos -the ones that are doing well and the ones that aren’t.
Finding a gap is called – Making something different.
For stories I would look for :
– Story-telling style (to learn the better style)
– Similar contents are being catered (to be unique)
– If there are a lot of interest in love stories and horror stories – making a combined type of story might be finding the gap.
Making something better or different that what exists is the way to inform the audience about what is new and different.
Creativity is combining existing information or ideas in interesting but in a new look. One doesn’t need to present an entirely new thing to be innovative. Better compilation makes the thing unique.
For that – not only watching other’s videos, watching other different things like sports, creatures, arts, books, music, paintings, foods and everything else can give us inspirations.
