Queen Aishwarya of Nepal; Biography

This is an update of Queen Aishwarya Shah of Nepal. Originally she was Chandani Rana before marriage. King Birendra used to call her Chandani or the Queen.

She was known for having a lot of anger. Here is a report on an incident to show how she behaved at times and how King Birendra dealt with her:

Queen Aishwarya Shah was known as one of the most beautiful ladies of her time. She was celebrated as a woman of classical beauty, famous for her hairstyle and the fashion style.

Biography of Queen Aishwarya

Born on 7 November 1949 in Lazimpat Durbar, Lazimpat, Kathmandu and died at the age of 51 in the Royal Massacre at Narayanhiti Palace on 1 June 2001. She was the eldest daughter among the three daughters of General Kendra Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana (1921–1982) and Shree Rajya Lakshmi Devi Shah (1926–2005).

In 1969, she married then crown prince Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev. Birendra was also her second cousin in relationship. She gave birth to King Dipendra, Prince Nirajan, and Princess Shruti. Her sisters Komal Rajyalaxmi Devi Shah married to her brother-in-law Gyanendra Shah also became the queen of Nepal after her death. Her younger sister Prekshya Rajyalaxmi Devi Shah was also married to her youngest brother-in-law Dhirendra Shah. Prince Dhirendra was killed in the palace massacre. Princess Prekshya was killed in a helicopter crash on 12 November 2001.

In addition to two sisters, she also had two brothers (Suraj Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana; Uday Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana). After her death, her younger sister became Queen consort of Nepal. Her family had been the effective rulers of Nepal until the 1950s. In 1969, she married Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, then Crown Prince of Nepal (and her second cousin).

Queen Aishwarya Education:

She went to St Helen’s Convent of Kurseong, India and St Mary’s of Jawalakhel for her school education. She did her School Leaving Certificate exam (S.L.C.) from Kanti Ishwari Rajya Laxmi High School in 1963. After that, she was enrolled in Padmakanya College of the Tribhuvan University-affiliated. She graduated with an Arts degree in 1967.

Queen Aishwarya was a good planner and manager who was told to help her husband in a lot of official works. She was told to be of dominant in nature.

Chandani Shah
In addition to being the queen, she was a well known literary figure. He had written a number of poems and songs. She wrote in her pen-name Chadani Shah. Her works are collected and published in book form titled Aphnai Akash Aphnai Paribesh. She was also a famous as a lyricist. Her songs were sung by well known singers like Narayan Gopal, Tara Devi and others.

The death of Queen Aishwarya
Along with Queen Aishwarya her husband, King Birendra; her son, Prince Nirajan; her daughter, Princess Shruti; and seven other royal family members were killed in a family gathering held on the Friday night of June 1, 2021. According to reports, gunshots had badly disfigured the face of Queen Aishwarya. During the funeral procession, her face was covered by a porcelain mask bearing her likeness.
