Medini Prasad Adhikari, 135, from Bahuntilpung-3, Sindhuli district is ill and is admitted to the Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, Kathmandu. The voters’ list at the District Election Office, Sindhuli mentions his birth year as 1876 A.D. (that makes him 134 years old)
In the Constituent Assembly election in 2008, he was 131 year old and was the oldest person to vote in Nepal. The event made news in national and international media at that time. But, nobody cared to verify the age.
If verified, he might be the one and the only person who managed to live that long. The oldest person in record was only 122 years old. The current record holder as per Guinness World Records, is 120 years old.
The oldest person in record is Jeanne Calment of France (1875–1997), who died at age 122 years, 164 days. The current oldest person is 120 year-old (Guinness World Records holder).
If proven, a grandfather in our country might be the oldest person in the world and still alive. Mediniprasad Adhikari, shown in the photo above, claims that he is 132 years old. According to Nagariknews, he is currently sick and is admited to the Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, Kathmandu (Photo credits -Sajana Shrestha).
UPDATE: In his courageous attempt to climb the Mt. Everest, Shailendra Kumar Upadhyay died on May 9, 2011 just above the Everest base camp. May his soul rest in peace!
The record keeping mountain, Mt. Everest, has been the best place for Nepali people to break old records and make new ones. Energetic, ambitious mountaineers like Apa Sherpa make and break their own records on it. But this time a well-known but unsuspected mountaineer is planning for a new record on the top of the world. Not so young, well known for works others than mountaineering, Shailendra Kumar Upadhyay is planning to scale the peak to break a previous record set by a 75 year old Japanese climber.
If you are from Nepal and had lived through the Panchayat System of 80s you would probably know Mr. Shailendra Kumanr Upadhyay. He had been a diplomat, social worker, and he also worked as Minister for Foreign Affairs.
