Flood and Landslide due to continuous rainfall: life at end or risk

Due to continuous rainfall, highest flow of water has been recorded in the Narayani River this year.

Floods in the Narayani River has led to a water flow at around 250,000 cusec per second, according to Prem Chandra Gupta, the Secretary of Gandak Struggle Committee, Nawalparasi.

As a result of the rising level of water current in the river, locals in Susta and Paklihawa are in danger. The river has already washed away many areas of fertile land and there is a risk for 16 villages along with Paklihawa, Thulokhairatawa, Narsahi, Guthiprasauni, Bhjahawa, Pratappur, Kudiya and Rupauliya.

Due to continuous rainfall from three days, six people died on Friday in Tanahun. Two persons identified as Harikumar Shrestha, 44, and Balika Gita Shrestha, 14, of Rishing Ranipokhari VDC-4, were killed after the Chisapani River swept them away. Dipendra Shrestha, 16, son of Harikumar Shrestha, is missing after being swept away by flood.

Go Maya Ale, 19 and her 14 days daughter Sajin Ale of Rishing Ranipokhari VDC-7, died due to landslide to their house. Pitmaya Thapa, 17, of Bhanumati VDC-8 was also killed by landslide.

Similarly, Chetmaya Bhattarai, 78, of Bandipur VDC-8 was pushed away to the Khaldi River by landslide while went to see the landslide in the village and found dead in the river.

On Thursday night, in Palpa, Dharma Prasad Bhandari, 35, of Madhauliya, Rupandehi got injured while his motorcycle ran into a landslide along the Palpa-Butwal section of the road and died on the way to Lumbini Medical College. Landslide was triggered by contniuous rainfall at Jhumsa of Dovan VDC.
