Phurba Tamang won this year’s Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon, the toughest and highest marathon in the world. The Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon is held on May every year. This year renounced actor Bhuwan KC also was there to participate in the marathon.
The marathon started on May 29, 2010 from Gorak Shep close to Mt. Qomolangma Base Camp in the south side of Nepal. The finish line is located at the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar (3,446 meters). The total course is a measured 42 km (26.2 miles) over rough mountain trails fulfilling the Olympic standard.
This year’s marathon was won by Phurba Tamang, 22, who completed the 42 km course in 3 hours 41 minutes and 20 seconds. He was the winner of last year’s marathon too.
Home runner Sudip Kulung Rai came in second, completing the course in 4 hours 2 minutes and 35 seconds. Sameer Tamang came in the third position by completing the race in 4 hours 5 minutes and 10 seconds. Results of 1-11 position is listed in the official site.
Winner for other two categories of female and foreign runners is not declared yet.
Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon is being organized under the aegis of Adventure Sports Tourism Society, which is an umbrella organization for all adventure sports activities being held in Nepal. There were 135 runners including 37 international participants in the marathon.
If the data given in their respective sites are to be believed, this Marathon starts at an elevation of 5,364m, another marathon, Everest Marathon, that starts at Gorak Shep, 5184m elevation, is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the highest marathon in the world.
