For the Oscar Awards to be held in February, four Nepali movies have applied to be selected to represent Nepal in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The application from the makers of Sunpani, Nishani, Bhimdatta and Talakjung VS Tulke was received to the Film Development Board, Nepal.

Application was called from the movies released between Ashoj 15, 2071 to Bhadra 14, 2072 BS to apply for the consideration to send to the Oscar awards in the USA. A five-members Oscar Award Selection Committee will evaluate the applications and send the most appropriate movie to the Oscar Awards selection committee.

Last year, ‘Jhola’ was sent to participate in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The movie was removed in the initial screening of the application. The only Nepali movie to be nominated in the category was Eric Valli movie ‘Himalaya’ (also known as ‘Caravan’), nominated in 1999.

The movie, ‘Bhimdatta’ is a historic movie made on the life of a patriotic Nepali of the Western Nepal. ‘Sun Pani’ is a social drama about the social discrimination between the higher cast and lower cast. Another movie ‘Nishani’ is made about the story of a Gurkha soldier in Kargil War. All of these movies are considered art movies. The most successful movies among the four is ‘Talakjung VS Tulke’. Although the movie was also an art style movie, the movie was successful commercially.

UPDATE – The government had chosen ‘Talakjung VS Tulke’ to represent Nepal. But, the jury at Oscars didn’t find it worthy enough to be nominated in Oscars.
