Goodbye Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was a greatest singer and performer. I still remember when I used to listen “Beat it” song when I was a kid. I didn’t understand the song and it sounded more like Bire Bire (short form of common Nepali name Bir Bahadur) and I loved it very much. Although, I could never understand most of his songs in a first go (if there were no lyrics attached in the cover) I immensely enjoy the music and the amazing videos he created.

Michael Jackson as a person might not be that much appealing but it is very sad and shocking that the King of Pop is no longer among with us.  Continue reading

Shortest person in the world

Svetlana Pankratova_He Pingping I have been talking about records made or to be made on the highest mountain in my previous posts – Min Bahadur Sherchan, Appa Sherpa, Shailendra Kumar, cricket at highest altitude, and mobile coverage on Mt. Everest.  This post again is about the height but it  is not about the tallest mountain but a shortest guy.

Looks like Guinness World Records book didn’t have a category for the record for a shortest person until a 20 years old and just 74.61 centimeters tall He Pingping got entry in it in the 2009 edition of the book and posed for its launch with the longest-legged Svetlana Pankratova. But our own Khagendra Thapa Magar was actually shorter than the guy and couldn’t get entry because of being underage at that time.

When he was seeking entry in the record book, Khagendra was only 50 centimeters(20 inches) tall and weighed 4.5 kilograms (10 pounds) and only 14 years of age. Khagendra hasn’t gained any height till he was eleven years old.  Soon (in about 4 months) he is turning 18 and he and his family are waiting that day for him to be registered in the World Record book. Let’s see some of his photos.

Record keeping is one thing but health and prosperity is far more important in one’s life. I hope he does get proper medical care and nutrition. Let’s wish him all the best throughout his life.

Challenging Mt. Everest at old age

Looks like Mt. Everest is the only place for Nepali to break records. Last month Appa Sherpa broke his own record of 18 accents by climbing it for the 19th time. I don’t know if it is already logged in the Guinness World Records but there are other attempts related to Mt. Everest waiting to be recorded in the book.

On 25 May 2008 Min Bahadur Sherchan reached the top of Mt. Everest at the age of 76 and he is waiting to get entry as the oldest person to climb the peak the World Record book. I hope it will occur before Shailendra Kumar Upadhyay climb the peak at the age of 80. Well, Min Bahadur, born in 1931 (1988 BS), won’t rest either; he is planning to climb it again before he turns 84. Sherchan, has broken the earlier record set by a 71-year-old Japanese man named Kat Katsusuke Yanagisawa, a school teacher, who climbed the Everest the previous year.

Let’s wish all the best to Sherchan for his effort to climb the highest peak and enter in the world record book.

Appa Sherpa set new Mt. Everest record of 19 accents

Well done Appa! Congratulation on your new record on the top of the world for the 19th time.

Appa Sherpa reached the top of Mt. Everest on May 21, 2009 at 8 am for the 19th time to break his own record of 18 ascents, last year. Appa was leading Eco Everest Expedition 2009.

It was not an easy expedition as this climbing season saw one of the worst weather conditions. The expedition was struck by tragedy on May 7 when Lhakpa Nuru, a high altitude climber, died in an avalanche and two of the team members gave up summit hopes and returned to Kathmandu.

After the failed first attempt in 1988 Appa climbed the peak for the first time in 1990. That is, 19 accents in 20 years.

1 more addition to 863 species of birds in Nepal

Recently, a team of Nepalese ornithologists studying birds of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR) have identified a new bird species for Nepal known as the Daurian Redstart (Phoenicurus auroreus). That adds up to a whooping 864 species of bird in such a small country.

The male bird has slate grey crown, nape and upper back while the center of back is black. It has black wings with prominent white patch while female bird is olive-brown in upper parts with tail and rump are rufous, a buffy eye ring and a distinct cream-colored wing patch. The under parts are generally fulvous to ochre-brown in color. Female of this bird is easily separated from females of other species by white wing patch.

Although this species may be a migratory species to Nepal, diverse geological setting of Nepal creates conductive environment to host many different species of lives. Many are listed as endangered ones and others are yet to be identified.

80-yr old man’s quest for Mt. Everest record

UPDATE: In his courageous attempt to climb the Mt. Everest, Shailendra Kumar Upadhyay died on May 9, 2011 just above the Everest base camp. May his soul rest in peace!

The record keeping mountain, Mt. Everest, has been the best place for Nepali people to break old records and make new ones. Energetic, ambitious mountaineers like Apa Sherpa make and break their own records on it. But this time a well-known but unsuspected mountaineer is planning for a new record on the top of the world. Not so young, well known for works others than mountaineering, Shailendra Kumar Upadhyay is planning to scale the peak to break a previous record set by a 75 year old Japanese climber.

If you are from Nepal and had lived through the Panchayat System of 80s you would probably know Mr. Shailendra Kumanr Upadhyay. He had been a diplomat, social worker, and he also worked as Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Nepali riddles – Village Eating Stories

In Nepal we have strange, unique riddle games of words. A cryptic question is asked and if you can answer it correctly you can have your choice of village. That is how the game was named “Gau Khane Katha” which roughly translates into “Village eating story” :D.

Due to the nature of language and unique socio-cultural nature on which they are formulated most of the riddles can’t be translated into English — at least not with the aura they pose in their original form. Some examples of popular riddles are given below:

Wears clothes when small but lives naked when grown up. What’s it?  Continue reading

World Record – Cricket played at the highest altitude

To create a world record of cricket played at the highest altitude, a group of cricket enthusiasts from the United Kingdom completed at Gorak Shep, near Mount Everest on April 21, 2009. The team had to walk for nine days before staging the match at an altitude of 16,945 ft. (5,160 meters).

Team Hillary beat Team Tenzing by 36 runs with six balls remaining.

The Nokia Maps Everest Test was inspired two years ago when cricket-mad expedition leader Richard Kirtley, 28, noticed that Gorak Shep, the highest plateau of its size in the world, bore a striking resemblance to the Oval cricket ground in south London, according to CNN. (myrepublica)
