A lot of Nepali people know Udit Narayan Jha as the most successful Nepali singer in Bollywood. But, many don’t know similarly successful Nepali singer, Poornima Shrestha. May be that is because Udit was a celebrity in Nepal before he debuted in Bollywood. In case of Poornima, she was born in Mumbai and lived her whole life in India.
[Biography Video] will be ready by Poornima’s birthday on September 5.
Poornima debuted as a child singer in early 1970s, as Sushma Shrestha. Sushma was born to a musical family of late Bhola Shrestha. Bhola Shrestha was an accomplished music composer and a tabala player. He was active in the music industry in the 1950s and 1960s. The father was really excited about launching his daughter in Bollywood as a successful singer. He had organized a big launch event of Sushma Shrestha with high profile Bollywood guests. A day before such a great event, her father died of heart failure. That was 11 April, 1971. That was after half-a-year of the release of the film Andaz (1971), and the debut song of Sushma.
Although her father died on the day before, 10-years-old Sushma was forced to perform in the event on April 12. The event couldn’t be cancelled because of all the preparations. At the event, Bollywood personalities took note of Sushma’s talent and she also got a music scholarship to help in her music career.
At the time of her first public performance, Sushma was just 7-years old. When she sang for the Bollywood movie ‘Andaz’, she was 9 years old.
She also worked with another musical duo Kalyanji Anandji who helped her in making a successful child singer of the 70s. RD Burman also helped her to give voice to hit songs of that time. RD Burman had composed unforgettable songs for Sushma like “Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koi†of film Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1973) and “Kya Hua Tera Vaada†of film Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahi (1977).
A well known Bollywood singer Udit Narayan Jha went to Mumbai in the Embassy of India scholarship in 1978. He was an employee of Radio Nepal prior to going to India for music studies. Apart from a well known singer, he was also an actor of superhit movie ‘Kusume Rumal’.
Udit Narayan Jha struggled in India for 10 years before he got successful. The movie ‘Kayamat Se Kayamat Tak’, the debut movie of Aamir Khan became successful helping both Aamir and Udit to establish themselves in Bollywood.

In the past, when you call Karishma Manandhar an “uneducated actress”, she would respond in anger. Now, the situation has changed. She accepts, she is uneducated and she is doing all she can to change that. She had lived her whole life being tagged “uneducated”.
But, Karishma had always taken the accusation a challenge. A 6th grade passed actress (she was in grade 7 when she stared acting). She never appeared in grade 7 exam. In the Nepali education system, where English language teaching starts at grade 4, Karishma had only studied English for 2 years. The same Karishma went to the USA, studied English language and wrote articles in her personal blog (it is sad, I didn’t save her blog posts at that time. I couldn’t find any saved archives of her blog yet.) When I read her posts at that time, she seemed to be well in command of the language. She passed the English language test to get the Green Card. It is another story that, she might have relinquished the card now.
Karishma Manandhar is a history in herself. She has faced the struggle nobody else in the Nepali film industry might have faced. She is a fighter who knows how to take the right step and succeed in what she does. Continue reading
