Look mama, the Anonymous' next easy target

A group named #OpEverest, claiming to be a part of an international hacker network Anonymous, had recently attacked official website of Nepal Government, nepalgov.gov.np. One of the next targets of the group is the site of Nepali Congress – nepalicongress.org.

Usually DDos attacks last for hours (not days or months or years!). I wonder what the effect will be to the website that has been flagged by Google for about 6 months (may be longer) and the owner doesn’t even notice? Here is a screenshot posted in xNepali forum on December of 2010 (The site should have been like that for much longer).

For comparison, I have taken the screenshot now, the site hasn’t changed and the owner Nepali Congress doesn’t care either.

My suggestion to Anonymous or #OpEverest: these sites don’t compare with Amazon or Visa or MasterCard sites. You should better save your energy to be used for something worthwhile. p>

Tough daily routine… to School

The kids in cities take it for granted, but their friends in remote parts of Nepal face numerous difficulties to go to school.

These high school students are from a Buddhaseen Village. They have to cross the river as seen in the photo above to reach their school and come back home in the evening the same way.

This photo by Kapil Dev Khanal was awarded first prize in news photo this year (this and other nice photos in Nagariknews).

Traffic accidents in Nepal in rising trend

Analysis of 18 years of data starting from FY 049/050 to FY 066/067, shows that traffic accidents in Nepal is in rising trend. This demands something concrete to be done to improve traffic safety in Nepal

The data shows an alarming reality of commuters in Nepal that not much is done in improving traffic safety over these years. Concerned authorities should do something to reduce these accidents.

It’s not only the total number of accidents, serious accidents and fatality resulting from such accidents is also in increasing trend.

There was a little bit of decrease in accidents during 2061-063. But, that too might be attributed to the banda and strikes done almost every now and then. (Data by SI-Dipendra Pradad Sah, Metropolitan Traffic Police, Nepal)

Maata Tirtha – Aamako mukh herne din – Mothers Day

Maata Tirtha is one of the auspicious festival in Hindu mythology falling on the. The pilgrimage (Tirtha) of mother (Mata) is collectively called ‘Mata Tirtha Aunshi‘. The main feature of the Nepali Mother’s Day are:

  • respect for the mother
  • People worship their living mother at their home
  • People offer mothers and offering sweets, fruits, yogurts and other items to please their mothers.
  • Those whose mothers have passed – they go to the Mata Tirtha Pilgrimage, about 15 km towards the eastern side of Kathmandu valley, beside Mata Tirtha Village development committee.

In Matatirtha, people take quick shower in the water taps and make offerings in the holy pond with a belief that the souls of their mothers come to the pond to accept their offerings. The visitors also worship Shiva lingam located near the holy pond.

Those who can’t go to mata-thirtha visit Pashupati temple in Kathmandu or any other holy places nearby to honor their departed mothers.

The statue of a mother image is opened once in a year on the Mata-tirtha day.

This locked mother-statue is opened only on Mata-tirtha day

Why do you buy newspapers? Think before buying Kantipur

If a Kantipur journalist, Aashis Luitel, is to be believed – people buy newspapers to listen to their ranting.

If you buy newspapers for news, better stay away from Kantipur. Aashish Luitel thinks he is the only person in Kantipur and tells people not to buy the newspaper if you don’t like his views.

Another user has rightly told the journalist that newspaper is not a blog. I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t listen.

After all, Aashis Luitel is also human – has to play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to express te real feelings!

Does your newspaper lock it's Twitter account?

Twitter.com is a micro-blogging platform where people can share their 140 character long messages. Politicians, celebrities, and businesses use Twitter to update their followers about the latest happenings. Newspapers usually post the headlines and links to the articles. General users use it as a tool to keep themselves updated on the topics of their interest. In addition to following, they also use it as a chat and discussion forum.

What surprised me most of Kantipur is their "official" Twitter page. What was the need to lock it?

I can understand general peo
ple locking their Twitter account. They want to make a close circle and don’t want their posts to be shared out of their community. But, what is the secret within Kantipur community? I thought newspapers are transparent and they write for the mass. May be, Kantipur’s journalism is different.

Shall I send the "follow request" ?

It is worth noting that, in the last few weeks, Kantipur started to publish random and personal twitter posts in its Friday special section. They even tried to act as "moral police" and called one of the Twitter user’s boss to complain about the twits he was posting.

How polluted is Kathmandu – before and after rain

Everybody knows the Kathmandu air is full of dust and smoke. Ankur Sharma has taken a photo before and after rain and superimposed to give a clear picture on how polluted Kathmandu is.

It is not only the dust and smoke, the sunlight is also rendered dim by cloud on the sky. So, the above photo might be slightly an exaggeration of actual level of pollution.
