Update: The news turned out to be a fake one. Somebody created a fake press release and dcnepal.com had based the news in it. Posted below is the so-called press-release. (It is strange how can a person consider such a crude photo authentic.)
The Home Ministry of Nepal Government has asked Facebook users not to post fake pictures of Nepali ministers in Facebook Wall. According to dcnepal.com the government will identify the people who post the photos and will punish if they don’t remove the photos.
The Government has given the Facebook users a time frame, of 5days, to remove such fake pictures from their Facebook account. The government will punish the users if they don’t comply with the Government directives.
A woman in China wanted to do a plastic surgery to look like Jessica Alba and Alba responded with a positive message, after a month.
I am wondering if it has anything to do with the upcoming romantic comedy movie ‘Valentine’s Day’, featuring Jessica Alba, and arriving in theaters on Feb. 12.
Last month, Xiaoqing, the 21 year-old Chinese student, told a newspaper in Beijing about her plan to undergo a surgical transformation to look like Jessica Alba. She told that her ex-boyfriend was a huge fan of Jessica Alba’s films and wanted his girlfriend to look like Alba. She wants to win back her Jessica Alba obsessed boyfriend by converting herself to Jessica Alba look-alike. Continue reading
The guy, Narsingh Bhandari Magar (right) doesn’t even know what this sign (left) means. But, he has lost one of his leg in childhood and has trained himself to earn his living, better than not so disabled people.
A teacher, Dal Bahadur Gurung of Dovan M.V. School in Dovan village of Palpa, Ghodebas in Western Nepal, was extremely surprised by the way Narsingh did his daily chores. With Gurung’s effort a documentary is prepared on Narsingh’s life and is being screened in various parts of Nepal.
Narsingh doesn’t need any support to do his daily jobs, not even a walking stick. His jobs are anything from cutting grass for his cattle, plough field with traditional halo (Narsingh is carrying one in photo), cross rivers, climb trees, and occasionally work as carpenter and mason. He can even dance on his one leg.
Narsingh is a real-life example to encourage people on dedication to work and not to dwell upon their shortcomings.
Do you remember the birdman Gautam Sapkota from my previous post who could mimic 151 different types of birds? The videos were convincing and the guy sure has some talent.
The 25-year old now claims that he can call 175 different birds to jam the Kathmandu International Airport. The reason – the government has created hindrance in his quest for the Guinness World Records.
There are so many problems in Nepal that the Nepalese Government can’t hear a plea until somebody chooses a disruptive mean – be it a traffic jam or city closure (popularly called ‘Banda’) to attract its attention. Gautam claims to have repeatedly asked the ministries of foreign affairs, finance and forest. But nobody cared for his plea. Now, according to a National newspaper, he has given a three months ultimatum to the government to write letters to the Guinness World Records officials. With the three month’s preparation he is planning to call unspecified number of crows to jam the air traffic on the only international airport in Nepal.
There was no priest though the bride’s brother and mother Shakuntala Thapa turned up to show their support. Thapa, a leading lawyer, is also fighting Sobhraj’s case in Supreme Court, challenging a lower court decision that declared him guilty of the murder of an American backpacker, Connie Jo Bronzich, in 1975. (indiatimes)
Sobhraj has in the past admitting to killing several Western tourists, and is serving a life sentence for killing a Canadian tourist in Katmandu in 1975.
Agreed, love is blind and love doesn’t see the barrier of age, sex or anything. But loving and marrying a killer with approval of a lawyer mother looks a bit fishy! Many questions remain unanswered like – how could a girl fall in love with a man so famous for killing women? Or how could they fall for each other in mere few visits of 20 minutes each?
It it Charles making some plans and Nihita being used? Or is it like Charles want to settle down and Nihita want to enjoy the sudden limelight?
Gautam Sapkota, from Hetauda, Nepal has set a World Record for most birds-calls imitating. He mimicked 151 different types of birds-setting for the record.
It is told that Gautam Sapkota has visited more than 6,500 schools in 45 districts of Nepal, interacting, entertaining and educating the kids about birds, their habitats, their ways of life and their calls. Photo by Sanjib K. Chaudhary (source)
He is also planning to release an album of popular Nepali folk songs remixed in the voice of different birds.
A Youtube user, Suren Shakya, met Sapkota in Hetauda and he managed to record 26 of his bird calls in the videos. Shakya has posted five video clips of the amazing Birdman including three popular songs in bird voice. Here are the videos:
He is speaking in Nepali in between. But the bird’s language is universal so I don’t think translating is that much necessary.
Do you know Hindu people drink cow urine for therapeutic and religious purposes? Sounds awkward but it is true. Now, researchers are trying to prove it is not a mere myth.
But it is not to be forgotten that urine is a product excreted through kidneys and contains the waste metabolites. It can also contain the bacteria, bovine tuberculosis for example, and other harmful germs and metabolic products.
Researchers of pharmacology and toxicology department, Veterinary College, Hebbal, India are conducting a study on ‘pharmacological and therapeutic evaluation of cattle urine’. In the first year of study, cow urine, which has traditionally been used only in clinical applications, has shown anti-diabetic properties. (times of india)
In another news, Uttarakhand (Indian province) Government in Feb 2008 announced that it will procure cow’s urine, on the pattern similar to the procurement of milk by dairies, refine it and sell it to Ayurvedic pharmacies. (tmmkonline)
Apart from cow urnine there are some who claim magic healing powers of drinking one’s own urine, called Shivambhu. Some claim that it contains antibodies which act against the harmful diseases affecting our body, but analytically and biochemical it has not been proven so far.
In one more news from Indian Express, Mumbai edition (published on the January 14, 2000 – clip attached), states that Gomutra (gomutram) or the Cow’s Urine highly beneficial in the treatment of Asthma, headache and tooth problems.
A hindu organization in Tamil Nadu, India seem to be forming a ”moral brigade” for film actresses these days. Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) wants to enter actresses’ wardrobes to choose which dress is decent and which is not. The group has filed a complaints against bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat over the issue of improper attire at a film function.
HMK accused the actress of wearing transparent and skimpy clothes. (source)
Mallika does wear bold dresses but I don’t think it is problem of a religious organization to point fingers on them.
Yeti is a mysterious creature which is supposed to be living in high Himalaya in Nepal Tibet border. But due to lack of evidence, it has remained sort of a mythical creature.
But in a recent report, some explorers and TV crew have claimed to find an evidence of its existence.
In the photo below, explorer Josh Gates shows the ‘Yeti foot’ in Kathmandu on Friday. A team of American explorers and TV crew found this ‘mysterious Yeti-footprint’ at Manjushree near Mt. Everest earlier this month. The abominable snowman, Yeti, is believed to live in the higher Himalayas in Nepal and Tibet. However, no scientific evidence of its existence has been found so far.
Women in a Pang VDC – 7 in Parbat, Western Nepal, are told to be mailing condoms to their husbands working overseas to protect them from sexually transmitted diseases.
They wrote letters urging them not to have sex with others  but they have been enclosing condoms just in case.
“As I learned that unsafe relations make a person vulnerable to HIV, I send condom along with the letter to my husband,” says Laxmi Sunar, member of the local women’s group, adding, “Hesitating to talk about sexual relations will not help. We should change behavior.” (Kantipur)
Believe it or not “restaurants” are being set-up for vultures in Nepal. These restaurants are targeted to preserve the wild vultures that have seen a huge decrease in their population owing to inappropriate meal. The vulture population in Nepal is estimated to have fallen to a mere 500 nesting pairs from at least 50,000 pairs in 1990.
In 2004 researchers working in Pakistan discovered that diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory drug used in livestock, was poisoning and killing vultures (29 July 2006, BBC). Nepal started producing a new cattle drug meloxicam, which is considered a safe alternative for anti-inflammatory diclofenac, and it is intended to halt a big decline in endangered vultures. (August 04 2006, iol). Although the use of diclofenac is prohibited in Nepal and neighbouring India, but the ban is widely ignored. Continue reading
In might sound strange, but Nepalese people sacrifice goats to please gods. Well, I think it should have started as an excuse for killing animals for meat. In Nepal, a small country with a population of 24 million and 330 million Gods, even vegetarian people sacrifice vegetables like zucchini, cucumber etc. for the gods.
But you have to be alarmed when engineers that too in airlines business start to believe on such things.
Officials at Nepal’s state-run airline have sacrificed two goats to appease Akash Bhairab, the Hindu sky god, following technical problems with one of its Boeing 757 aircraft, the carrier said Tuesday. The goats were sacrificed in front of the troublesome aircraft Sunday at Nepal’s only international airport in Kathmandu in accordance with Hindu traditions, an official said. (Reuters)
The photo on the left is taken from Nepali National Daily Kantipur dated Sept. 4, 2007.
Translation of the Nepali text below the photo: An aircraft of Nepal Airlines Corporation being offered sacrifice of a goat. This aircraft has a history of recurrent technical problems. The journalist who took this photo was taken in captivity of the airport security personnel for four hours and he was charged Rs. 226 (about $3.50) as a fine on his release. 5,000 beer cans and skilled hands made a recycled replica of Ford Mustang 1965.
Like all good students Jack Kirby collected his beers cans. Unlike most good students the art and design student actually found a use for them.
When he realised Budweiser was giving away his dream car, a 1965 Ford Mustang, he spent a month crafting this recycled replica. Kirby said: “I love Mustangs, and when I heard that Budweiser was putting one up for auction I didn’t want to miss out. I’ve got everything crossed that I win but if I don’t I have the next best thing – an exact replica built from Budweiser cans!”
One friend of mine sent a couple of scanned copies of local newspapers. I want to share these weird accidents involving mobile phones. Comments will be highly appreciated.
A bit of history of mobile phone in Nepal: First GSM Mobile service was launched in Nepal in 1999. Since then there have been many mobile subscribers to the service. Another service provider, Mero Mobile, started its service in 2005. However, they haven’t been able to provide the service as per demand.
