Risky commute – Kathmandu street

Travelling on a goods carrier in itself is risky. Travelling in excess of it’s capacity is riskier. It is not only risky for the travellers, it is also a hazard for other vehicles. And, motorbikes are not designed to transport animals. Animal behaviors can not be predicted and unexpected behavior of the goat can not only cause harm to the commuters on the motorbike, but also other vehicles around it.

Do they have traffic rules in Kathmandu? If there are, why aren’t they implemented?

Is it not only the responsibility of the traffic police to control s
uch risky travel. Safety awareness in the commuters and the drivers is equally important.

But, a hefty fine would certainly help in reducing such an unsafe practice. (Photo received from Rajan Timilsina, one of our readers)

Renewing expiry date on cornflake packets

A wholesale businessman of cornflake collect all the expired cornflake packets from the retail shops and repackage them in packages with new expiry dates. This is done manually in his rental room in Dillibazar.

Ram Prasad Neupane had taken the following photos showing how the repackaging of cornflake is done.

By looking at the packages, can you tell which brand is the cornflake is?

Rani Pokhari Temple Now and Then

The temple located at the center of Rani Pokhari opens only on the day of Bhai Tika. Those who don’t have brothers or sisters go to the temple to get a tika.

The temple has been around for a long time and hasn’t changed much. The following photo shows the temple in 92 year-old photo (taken in 1920). When compared with the current photo, you can see that the Ghantaghar on the background has changed much but the pokhari and the Rani Pokhari Temple look the same.

Tainted medicine – time to take action

A bottle of IV fluid purchased in a pharmacy near Bir Hospital contained visible particles in it. The medicine manufactured by Tablets India Pvt. Ltd. shows sheer negligence in manufacturing a fluid that is directly injected in blood vessels.

This should only be an eye opener for the consumer protection bodies in the government to exercise tighter quality control of critical products like medicine – just like the action taken for food hygiene and action against adulteration, last month.

It's no school bus – luggage rack the culprit?

Yes, it’s not an school bus like the ones you won’t like the little kids to ride (for example, three wheeler school buses, and the auto rickshaw and transportations so crowded that school kids even had to ride in between the steering wheel and the driver). But, these kids are taking extreme risk to go to their school in this public bus. There is probably no seat inside the bus and if they miss this bus they might miss their school. No driver or khalasi (bus helper) can force the children to get down.

Everybody knows it is unsafe, but the government authorities haven’t been able to control such types of unsafe transportation and are thinking of implementing new measures to stop such behavior of the passengers.

Now, they seem to have found the cause of such an abuse of public transportation – "the luggage rack" on top of the bus. When there is no seat or space inside, the passengers usually take refuge to the luggage rack on the top. The passengers usually ignore the request of the bus driver, bus helper, or even the police officers because of the scarcity of transportation during rush hours and festive seasons.

Open School

No, it’s not an equivalent of an "Open University," it’s truly open – no walls around it and no roof to cover the heads of the tender kids. There are grades 1 to 3 in this under-the-sky school.

The following photo Photo shows a teacher taking mathematics class in a primary school in Darau VDC-5, Shyangja. Let’s hope, one of the kids will change the world!
