A beauty contest has broken the unwritten rule in Nepali entertainment industry – no swimsuit or bikini round in beauty contest. The contest titled Miss Kathmandu organized a swimsuit round for Miss Best Figure title. The photos and the details of the contest was however kept a secret among the organizers and the contestant. The only photo I could find of the contest is the one published in Kantipur’s Saptahik. The Facebook page of the contest doesn’t even mention the Best Figure contest.

The finale of the contest was held on Monday, November 6, 2017 in Hotel Malla, Lainchour, Kathmandu. The crown was awarded to Angel Khati out of the 11 contestants. The first runner up was Sarita Tamang, and second runner up Anisha Lama. The details of the

Although the contest was quite liberal in terms of participation, there weren’t many contestants. The height restriction was set at 5 feet (Miss Nepal contestants need to be 4 inches taller). It wasn’t restricted to Kathmandu either because auditions were also held in various cities all over Nepal. Auditions were held in Butwal, Biratnagar, Pokhara, Dharan and Birtamode from Shrawan 21 to Shrawan 28.

Swimsuit in Nepali beauty contest

A lot of beauty contests are held in Nepal every year. But, most of them try to portray themselves as talent contest rather than beauty contest. They try to do a lot of social work and cover up their bodies as much as they can. That was because of the protest of women advocacy groups who accuse those contests using women’t body as objects.

Such protests during Miss Nepal 2007 and Miss Nepal 2008 are remembered throughtout the history of beauty contest. That was because the contest of 2008 was canceled at the last minute because of the protests. The government of CPN Maoist had also refused to provide security to the organizers at that time. The protestors were the sister organization of the ruling party – CPN Maoist.

Although it is uncommon in Nepal, swimsuit rounds are integral part of international beauty contests. So, every Nepali contestants who participate in those contests are required to pose in bikini for the contest. So, it makes sense to start such rounds in the domestic contests. A latest example is the Nepali representative of Miss Earth 2017 contest who Rojina Shrestha posed in bikini for one of the rounds.
