Five types of Nepali movies (with links to example movies)

A friend in Twitter, Rakesh, has categorized the Nepali movies in four differentÂ types. Although the categorization is done very loosely and the boundary of this categorization is extremely blurry, such a categorization can give a rough guide on what a particular movie is like. I think, there is room for improvement in this categorization so that one can easily decide on whether to watch the movie or not. There is a possibility that some movies might fall in more than one category. Let’s review each category in detail with examples.

Masala Nepali movies

Masala Nepali movies contain all the different entertaining aspects of movies. They are the mix of comedy, family drama, action, music and love all stuffed in a movie to appeal all types of viewers. They might contain all these ingredients (masala) or some of them. These types of movies are less risky and hence, the established film producers prefer to go with these type of movies.

True Geek Tattoo, Arunima Lama, Priyanka, Sujata Sitaula and others

At xnepali, when we talk about tattoo, it’s tattoo on the body of Nepali artists. Once we posted some tattoo photos of true geeks. Now that is the past. The geekiest tattoo on Nepali artists might be that of actress Arunima Lama. Arunima Lama was featured as a nude model in the movie ‘Kina Kina’. The movie features two tattooed actresses – Arunima and actress Karishma Manandhar (you can watch ‘Kina Kina’ here).

Kina Kina to release as Na Jaane Kyun in Hindi

The Nepali movie featuring Rajesh Hamal and Karishma Manandhar, ‘Kina Kina’ is going to release in Hindi in a different name. The movie renamed ‘Na Jaane Kyun’. The Ukesh Dahal’s movie is made on sex theme in which, Rajesh is featured as a nude painter.

Ukesh debuted in Nepali movie industry as an adult film director through ‘Palpalma‘. The movie was successful and he advertised for an actress to pose for nude model in his next project. Arunima Lama agreed to do the role of the model. The movie went through a problem to get censor clearance but, later got through with an ‘A’ rating.

The success of ‘Chapali Height‘ in box office and the success of similar themed previous movie ‘Palpalma’ have provided Nepali producers an news insight: an adult themed movie does a good business in Nepal. Following the same trend, another Nepali movie ‘Chandrawati’ is also set to be released bearing an adult certificate.

Is sex good for Nepali film industry?

Chapali height” (watch Chapali Height here) got a good media coverage both before and after release. That was partly because of different controversies the movie was involved in before it was released, and ‘sexual psychology’ highlighted in it’s promotion. Although some have questioned the validity of the claims of its producer that ‘Chapali Height‘ has collected 50 lakhs in a single day, the publicity and viewers in theaters show it should have had a decentÂ opening. But, one can expect the initial response to fade in lights of negative reviews it is getting from critics and viewers.

Now, the question arises – is the movie getting negative review from viewers just because it has got sexual contents?

‘Chapali Height‘ compares well with a previous similar movie ‘Pal Pal Ma‘ released about two years ago. The movie ‘Pal Pal Ma‘ had also got an adult certificate from the censor board and it was publicized as the first Nepali movie to get an adult certificate. The ‘A’ certificate itself proved to be a tool of good publicity, and a good business as well. But, in essence, ‘Pal Pal Ma‘ had nothing to win the hearts of its viewers and virtually nobody appreciated it as a movie. In the movie, the topic of sex was only used for publicity and it was used in a vulgar way. (watch Palpalma here)

I think, history is repeating in case of ‘Chapali Height‘ too. In the case of both movies, small group of people liked the movie and the majority didn’t.

Palpalma â€“ Movie trailer

The Nepali movie â€œPalpalmaâ€ was being screened in Hong Kong but it is not known when it will come to the theaters in Nepal. The Censor Board of Nepal has decided that the movie is adult in nature and kids under 16 years of age are not permitted to watch it. Debut movie of director Ukesh Dahal and produced by Mr. Harihar Acharya, the movie is told to have a new taste and fresh concept. The movie is even expected to set a new standard in Nepali Movie Industry.

The bed scene photo of the movie has been around before the completion of the movie. The movie was previously said to be coming to the theaters in Kathmandu on the Nepali New Year (Mid-April, 2010) but there is no sign of its release.

â€˜Palpalma’ is about male sex workers and deals with sexual relationship between people. The bold scenes, never been seen before in a Nepali movie, will surely make it a hot cake among Nepali adults. Main cast in the movie are Ramit Dhungana, Dilip Rayamajhi, Rupa Rana, Sujata Situla, Dilip Gautam, Suman Singh, Bikrant Basnet, Usha, Sashi Khadka, and Asim Rana.

Palpalma screened in Hong Kong

Thanks to the bed scenes, Nepali movie Palpalma was dragged into controversy during its shooting. The movie was widely publicized with photos and posters of such scenes featuring Ramit Dhungana and Sujata Sitaula.

The Film Board however didn’t cut any scenes and categorized the movies not suitable for everybody.

The movie revolves around the lives of the wives of â€˜Lahure’, who go to foreign lands to work. Lahure wives and their search of male partners is the main story of the movie. The main characters in the movie is the wife of a foreign worker and her partner.

The movie was shown in two locations in Hong Kong recently. The director of the movie Ukesh Dahal told that the Nepali community in Hong Kong liked the movie. Palpalma is the first movie of Ukesh as a director.
