7 died, 700 ill because of Anti-elephantiasis

Apr 2, 2011 @ 11:30

Nepal Medical Association (NMA) expressed its deep concern over the deaths and suffering of the victims who consumed the elephantiasis prevention drug distributed by the government. At least seven people died and around 700 took “seriously ill” in the last three days, according to unofficial reports.

Elephantiasis is a disease that causes thickening of the skin and underlying tissues, especially in the lower body, caused by small, threadlike parasitic worms spread by Culex female mosquitoes.

The government administered two free different drugs — Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and Albendazole — to 14.5 million people aged above 2 years in 36 districts on March 26 and 27 and they began showing adverse side effects from Wednesday.
High rate of deaths and illness are being reported from Banke, Bardiya, Saptari, Dang and Okhaldhunga districts. In Banke alone, two persons died and more than 500 took ill. Two died in Saptari and 50 people were referred to BP Koirala Memorial Hospital, Dharan. One person died in Dang and one in Okhaldhunga. By Friday evening, more than 100 similar cases have been registered in various health institutions, hospitals across the country.

Meanwhile, medical teams are in field studies in Banke, Bardiya, Saptari and Dang and will prepare report by Sunday. “The drugs cause various side effects like high fever, severe headache, vomiting, diarrhoea and dizziness, but not death,” Dr Biswa Raj Khanal, senior Public Health Administrator at EDCD, said. He added, EDCD has been administering the anti-elephantiasis pill for the last 50 years and Albendazole for last 20 years at the recommendation of WHO.

Nepal or India, who is grabbing land of other nation?

Usually, it is India that grabs Nepali land. Indian nationals used to be heard of taking benefit of the open Nepal-India border to take over land.

But this time, the story is different according to an Indian television news channel. The channel claims that thousands of villagers in seven border districts of Bihar have lost their land and homes to encroachers from Nepal – triggering a significant rise in violence and conflict along the state’s border with the Himalayan Kingdom.

On Thursday, the online news of CNN-IBN, a prominent Indian news channel, reported :

The land grab, it appears, has its genesis in a warped century old border treaty. The Indian authorities’ inability to ensure pillars demarcating the border stays intact, making it worse.

According to CNN-IBN news, villager Rashud Ansari, has said, Nepal is occupying the land which should be part of Bihar as all the papers for that land are with India and are from India. The local authorities are well aware about this issue but their hand seems tied down. It further writes, “A lot of people here are leaving their homes and are going to other towns because of the amount of problem Nepal is creating in illegally occupying our land,” said Ramesh Kamgaar, a villager.

The report further said, the 600 Km long open Indo-Nepal border is being patrolled by the Sashatra Seema Bal or SSB, India’s border security force. Yet, pillars demarcating the border are regularly uprooted.

CNN-IBN cited Indian intelligence reports which estimates as below: –

716 International border pillars have disappeared along the Indo-Nepal border.

  • 281 pillars out of 716 have been uprooted in Madhubani district,
  • 116 pillars from East Champaran district,
  • 61 from West Champaran and
  • 3 from Araria district.

The report referred the Sugauli treaty signed by the British in 1816, declaring the river Mahakali as the border between the two countries and said the treaty is meaningless as the river has changed course several times southwards into Indian land.

Why do you buy newspapers? Think before buying Kantipur

If a Kantipur journalist, Aashis Luitel, is to be believed – people buy newspapers to listen to their ranting.

If you buy newspapers for news, better stay away from Kantipur. Aashish Luitel thinks he is the only person in Kantipur and tells people not to buy the newspaper if you don’t like his views.

Another user has rightly told the journalist that newspaper is not a blog. I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t listen.

After all, Aashis Luitel is also human – has to play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to express te real feelings!

Does your newspaper lock it's Twitter account?

Twitter.com is a micro-blogging platform where people can share their 140 character long messages. Politicians, celebrities, and businesses use Twitter to update their followers about the latest happenings. Newspapers usually post the headlines and links to the articles. General users use it as a tool to keep themselves updated on the topics of their interest. In addition to following, they also use it as a chat and discussion forum.

What surprised me most of Kantipur is their "official" Twitter page. What was the need to lock it?

I can understand general peo
ple locking their Twitter account. They want to make a close circle and don’t want their posts to be shared out of their community. But, what is the secret within Kantipur community? I thought newspapers are transparent and they write for the mass. May be, Kantipur’s journalism is different.

Shall I send the "follow request" ?

It is worth noting that, in the last few weeks, Kantipur started to publish random and personal twitter posts in its Friday special section. They even tried to act as "moral police" and called one of the Twitter user’s boss to complain about the twits he was posting.

Anuja Baniya story was fake, Prez directed for inquiry

Anuja Baniya was praised everywhere for the news about her returning a bag containing Rs. 9.1 million and a diamond necklace to the rightful owner on April 9. This news was first published in Kantipur Daily and was covered in a number of other newspapers. Even the President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav called Baniya to appreciate her deeds.

But on Friday, a question was raised on the validity of the story when Baniya requested Kathmandu Police to find out the number of Poudel. Baniya told that the number was deleted from her mobile.

The photo on the newspaper itself was a fake. Anuja is the one on the left whereas the photo on the right is that of her friend Mamata Adhikari

Kumar Baniya, cousin of Anuja, told that he couldn’t believe the story of Anuja finding money and returning it.The President´s Office had also asked Morang Chief District Officer to cross-check to find out the truth behind the incident.

The Morang’s CDO has transferred the responsibility to Sunsari’s CDO Ram Prasad Thapaliya saying the matter did not fall under his jurisdiction.

Baniya claimed that she indeed found the bag and returned it to its owner. She has appealed Poudel to come in front of public.

Poudel is said to have withdrawn the sum from IME, Itahari, and traveled to Dharan to purchase land for his daughter. However, IME Itahari´s manager Darshan Shrestha, said that nobody had withdrawn that much money from the branch since April 2.

UPDATE: Kantipur has told that the news was incorrect and has apologized for the mistake

Honesty still survives, honest woman did not take anything in return

In this selfish world, still there live good people, honest people. This has been proved by recent incident when twenty year old Anuja Baniya returned a bag containing Rs. 9.1 million and a diamond necklace to the owner.

On April 9, Purushottam Poudel of Sitapaila, Kathmandu was heading to his daughter’s house at Dharan-9 and absentmindedly left the bag when he got off the vehicle. He had received the cash from a IME Itahari branch that he had transferred from the Capital. Poudel was thinking to take the money to his daughter, Sudha Pokharel for the purpose of purchasing a house.

But Poudel became hopeless when he came to know about it and returned to Kathmandu without informing the police. Fortunately, the bag was found by honest Anuja Baniya while travelling in Dharan. Baniya, a permanent resident of Jhulke of Bhojpur, has been staying in Dharan of Sunsari, with her uncle and aunt. She is an ordinary woman with just normal education.

When nobody claimed the bag, Baniya took it to her residence thinking to return it to the rightful owner with the help of documents that the bag possibly contained. She was dumbstruck when she opened the bag and found Rs. 9.1 million cash and a diamond necklace.

Baniya found the owner’s telephone number from the documents inside the bag and informed Poudel at his residence of finding the bag by telephone. Then Poudel came to Dharan on April 12 and received the money after three days.

According to Anita Karki, a relative of Poudel, he offered Rs. 200,000 to Baniya as a cash reward but she refused it. Poudel later tried to gift her, the diamond necklace but she refused it too.

Baniya spent some time with Poudel family after handing over the cash and valuables, but she refused to give her address and contact number. “People may not believe it. But it’s a true story of this remarkable women’s honesty,” said elated Pokharel, 65.
