Annapurna post, the only Nepali website that can't be read

UPDATE: After the publication of this post, the webmaster of Annapurnapost.com seem to have corrected the problem and the website can now be read.

When every other websites can be read, the only Nepali website that can’t be read in popular browser, Firefox, is Annapurna post’s website.

Yesterday, the executive editor of Annapurna Post daily, Guna Raj Luitel, while explaining the reason for price hike told that, there are not many Nepali people with access to internet. But, even those who have access – haven’t been able to read the website since it came into existence. When I complained, I was suggested to use Internet Explorer.

annapurna_post_firefox

I had no interest in it’s content so, I had never tried to open in it’s recommended browser, Internet Explorer.

Today I decided to try it in IE, and the result was surprising -the output was the same with only thicker letters. The output looks like below:

annapurna_post

If I were to believe in conspiracy theories, it seems they have largely neglected website not to decrease it’s paper readership.

In the age of Unicode, Annapurna remains the only website that can’t be read in popular browsers. It’s one more reason for the readers to dump Annapurna Post in the wake of recent 100 percent increase in paper version of top three newspapers.

Please tell us, in comment, if you can read the website in your computer.

Price Hike – unnatural alliance between three media houses

Annapurna Post, Kantipur Publication’s Kantipur Daily and Republic Media’s Nagarik have reached into an agreement to increase the price of the Nepali dallies by 100%.  The dailies that cost Rs. 5 were priced double at Rs. 10 on December 14, 2011. On the surface, these three newspapers used to be considered rivals of each other.

In response, Kunda Dixit in his Twitter post, told, "Dead tree newspapers are dinosaurs, start reading them online and save the environment."

The longest notice about the price hike is published by Annapurna Post. Nagarik published the second longest and Kantipur published the shortest notice to explain why they have decided to hike the price.

4 Wild elephants roamed in Birtamod city

Four wild elephants came in the commercial center of eastern Nepal, Birtamod.

Wild elephant in human settlements are very risky as they can cause damage to people and their properties. Such wondering of wild elephants in human settlements are attributed to the encroachment of their habitat, the jungle. People have left little of the natural habitat for wild animals.

LPG Gas Cylinder – don't panic, It's not Expiry Date

Were you one of those who received an email warning your LPG gas cylinder might have expired? The emails comes with the following photo of a gas cylinder with D-06 written in it indicating the fourth quarter of 2006. This coding only applies to the cylinders manufactured in India under the ISI guidelines. As, the cylinders supplied in Nepal are imported from India, they also apply to the cylinders available in Nepal.

The truth is, it is not a "true" expiry date!

It is the date of next Statutory Testing. It sure is riskier to use that has passed the testing date but be assured, the life of the cylinder is not expired. For example, as of now, all the cylinders should have the writing at least A-12 or higher to confirm that the cylinder is tested for it’s safety.

If you haven’t received the warning email, here is what the email looks like:  Continue reading

Bull fight on the street – nobody was invited

Our traffic police are well aware of animal rights and they let animals roam freely on the street. The drivers are fully responsible for the accidents caused by such stray animals.

There is not data on what percent of the road accidents in Nepal are caused by street patrolling animals. But, one can easily guess there should be considerable amount of accidents caused by them.

An example of what can happen in the street is the following photo from Nepalgunj. Pranit Sharma captured a live bullfight in the street beside Laxmi Guest House and Padmaganga Guest House.

It is not known if anybody got hurt due to the great sight on the street. Long live animal rights!

16 pillar rest house (Shorha Khutte Pati)

Shorha Khutte Pati (16 pillar rest house) located on the north-western part of the Capital, is a wind house of historical importance. Located on the path connecting Trishuli with Kathmandu, the rest house was used by the pedestrians when there was no motor able road link.

The place is known as Shorha Khutte after the rest house located at the base of a slope. The people tired of walking a long distance take rest in the 16-pillar rest house before they ascend the height. Although, in the past, it was one of the most important structure in the area, these days, it is hidden from taller buildings surrounding it and also suffers from lack of maintenance and care.

Risker to drive in Nepal (Traffic accident data analysis)

In May, 2011 we posted about traffic accidents in Nepal up to FY 2066/067. Adding one more data to the chart shows an alarming increase in the number of accident in  FY 2067/068. That was an increase of more than 500 accidents in a year.

When  we see the number of death due to accidents, the number also increases from 146 to 171 death, an increase of 25 deaths.

The data shows that the government is not doing enough to reduce accidents or death caused by such accidents. So, the citizen themselves should be more careful while driving. They should be more proactive to increase awareness in people about traffic safety and rules of the road.

I hope the social media groups that have been doing laudable works in the past will also think in that direction.

Hot water spring in Bahundanda Fedi Lamjung

Hot water spring located in Bahundanda Fedi of Lamjung district is popular among the tourist trekking in Annapurna circuit.

It seems, there are a lot of small hot springs along Marsyangdi river that first runs north between the Annapurna and Manaslu. Falling along the Main Central Thrust, in the Marsyandi Valley, central Nepal, "waters are heated by the elevated geothermal gradient, and mix with deep-sourced carbon dioxide before degassing at the surface"

Government official stationed in Dance Restaurant?

At around 9.30 pm on November 12, Riten Kharel saw this government vehicle parked in a dance restaurant "Bhanjyang Rodhi" at Gwarko and took this photo.

One can be pretty sure that the official who is assigned the vehicle shouldn’t be in his job related work at that time of night. Riten asks, ‘Isn’t it the misuse of a government property?" Government officials are free to visit any restaurant. But, do they need to use the government vehicle and spend government purchased gasoline for their personal gratification?

What do you think?

Does anybody know which office does the license plate belong to?

CYSU youth clean up Bir Hospital

CYSU youth teamed up to clean the Bir Hospital area. Such a voluntary movement is expected to have a long term impact on creating social awareness and impart a feeling of responsibility in people. It is another proof that social media is the next revolution.

Manish Thapa and CYSU Team, in a statement, had told that the effort also inspired the staffs of Bir Hospital to help in cleaning and the Bir Hospital Administration was also very cooperative.

Damauli bridge over Madi river

A long bridge over Madi river in Damuli is the longest bridge in Prithivi Highway (Kathmandu-Pokhara highway). I can’t remember the total length of the the 9-span bridge (I hope somebody will post it in comment) .

UPDATE – With thanks to Ajay ji in comment – the length of the bridge is 370m.

Another beautiful photo of the bridge shows the majestic Machapuchre and Annapurna range in the background. (I don’t know who took this photo so couldn’t credit the photographer.)

The picture above was taken from Google map – an areal view of the bridge.
