About ‘Kagbeni’

A 2008 release Nepali movie ‘Kagbeni’ is loosely based on the W. W. Jacobs’ 1902 horror short story “The Monkey’s Paw”. The plot of the movie takes place in a place called Kagbeni, located in the Kali Gandaki valley, about 2-hour walk from Muktinath. Well known journalist Bhusan Dahal has directed the movie featuring well known theatre actors in leading roles.

I think, ‘Kagbeni’ is one of the Top 10 must watch Nepali movies for it’s uniqueness in story telling and quality. As, the movie is an art movie, those looking for an entertaining story might not find it appealing.

Star Cast of ‘Kagbeni’

‘Kagbeni’ features Saugat Malla and Deeya Maskey in leading roles. Saugat Malla became popular as Haku Kale, a character in super hit movie ‘Loot’. The actor Saugat Malla is considered one of the best actors of the Nepali film industry. Apart from being a good actor, Malla is also in top of the news because of his affair with ex-Miss Nepal and the actress of ‘Gajalu’, Shristi Shrestha.

The actress Deeya Maskey is also a well known theatre actress. As both Saugat and Deeya have theatre background, they have justified the character they are featured in. Diya is known for controversial statements in interviews. She is married to Anup Baral, a well known actor and theatre play director. Well known singer Nima Rumba is also an attraction of the movie. Well known journalist, Bhusan Dahal, had directed the critically acclaimed movie. Apart from directing music videos, Dahal, hasn’t directed another movie after the 2008 release film. He is however active in journalism and is considered one of the best journalists of Nepal.

We Will Rise charity event held in Hong Kong

A charity program titled ‘We will rise’ was held in Hong Kong recently. The program to help raise fund for earthquake relief was a successful and entertaining program in Hong Kong.

For the first time after returning back from the USA, actor Saroj Khanal went on a stage show in a foreign soil. He had performed with actress Karishma Manandhar in a musical titled ‘Priyasika Yaadharu’. Saroj and Sarita Giri performed in a play titled ‘Hamro Aawaz’. Actress Sushma Karki had danced in ‘himallai Dhakyo Kanchha…’

Loot – new confidence in Nepali movie industry

Our congratulation to Loot for it’s 51 days celebration on Friday, March 2, 2012 !

This year had been a bit different for Nepali film industry. There used to be a trend in our film industry that, a movie require star cast to be a hit. This year, neither nor Rekha Thapa could ensure a good box office collection. At the same time, new director, new music director, and few struggling actors in ‘Loot‘ proved that a good movie doesn’t need star cast.

Yes, ‘Loot’ is still running in theaters and is extending its market to overseas too.

The fact that ‘Loot’ has become a hot cake topic among the film makers and movie goers left me wondering: is it such a wonderful movie? Should everybody watch it ?

Nepali Movies – A clash between old and new generations

For the last two decades, Nepali film industry has been ruled by and his craze hasn’t diminished to date. The new comer actors had tried to follow his path, but none have succeeded. Hamal represents masala types of movies with common ingredients like action, comedy, songs, and glamorous actresses.

After the release of "Sano Sansar" and "Kagbeni", Nepali movies had stepped in new direction creating a sharp contrast between the two groups of film makers.
