108 feet statue being built in Bhaktapur

tallest_statueAn 108 ft. statue, featuring Lord Shiva holding a Trishul in one hand, is being built in Sanga, Bhaktapur. The statue is expected to be finished in a couple of months.

The work on the statue started three year back with the financial support of Kamal Jain, owner of Hiltake water tank company. Jain, an Indian national, has been doing business in Nepal for the last 18 years.

The concept design of the statue was prepared by an Indian engineer, Maturam Verma. Five Indian sculpturers and 100s of Nepali workers are working in finishing the statue before Shiva Ratri, a festival of Shiva. NRs. 20 millions has already been spent in the construction of the statue.

Jain believes that the statue will be helpful in development of tourism in the area.

Pooja Lama to participate in Indian Idol

pooja lama Pooja Lama doesn’t need introduction. The sex video and marriage gave her enough publicity. That sure wasn’t a good publicity so, for some good publicity she is going to participate in Indian Idol.

In a recent interview with Saptahik weekly she revealed that she is going to Mumbai in a couple of weeks to participate in an audition of Indian Idol. It might seem odd for a Nepali model, actress, singer to participate in Indian Idol. But, she explained that she was born in Darjeeling so she can participate in the talent hunt show held in India.

Indigenous Film Festival concluded in Chitawan

NIIFF 2010 Fourth Nepal International Indigenous Film Festival 2010 is being held in various parts of Nepal. In the event held in Chitawan last Saturday, a Magar language film, Barahi Putra, was ranked the top.

The event in Chitawan was organized by Tamang Film Association with the support of Indigenous Film Archive (IFA). Among the ten films screened in the event, some of the movies liked by the audiance were: Gurung film Tinaga, Tamang film Godeba, Tharu film Bhuyaar, and a documentary named The Long Journey.

Madan Krishna and Hari Bamsha against animal sacrifice

The issue of animal sacrifice in Gadhimai mela is getting more attention as the mela date (Nov 22) is coming closer. First, animal right groups and the Buddha boy raised concern on half-a-million animals being killed in the mela. Now, others are following the quest to stop the inhuman act in the name of God.

The most popular comedians and leaders in social awareness, MaHa-duo (Madan Krishna Shrestha and Hari Bansha Acharya), have come forward to back the protest. They were talking in a program organized by an animal rights group on November 13, in Patan, Lalitpur.

Hari Bamsha talked about a show in Chitawan National Park in which live buffaloes and goats were fed to wild tigers. The show was stopped when one of the tourists who saw the show wrote the government against it. The tourist asked the government to place the leaders in place of the goats and buffaloes for allowing a business to run a cruel show.

Minister Mentality of Karima Begum

I resisted writing about the incident about a deputy minister of Nepal, Karima Begum, beating a top government employee, Chief District Officer, Durga Prasad Bhandari, in Parsa. I couldn’t hold myself after I listened her talking in a TV interview. The government employees have gone to street to protest the man handling and police has issued an arrest warrant for Minister Begum.

The vision and mentality of a law maker of the country and one of the member of cabinet, that is supposed to prepare the constitution, made me very sad.

Kantipur TV called her in a live prime-time TV interview and she kept talking on and on ignoring the indication of the host about the time constraints. She talked for a full 13 minutes but there was nothing new and she was repeating herself with unnecessary details of the incidents. The rude reasoning for the extended talk didn’t make any sense either.

Carrie Prejean, Larry King and inappropriateness

Don’t make sex tapes at all! That is the lesson to be learnt from the recent events of Namrata and Pooja, and Carrie Prejean as well (I think).

Former miss California Carrie Prejean told Larry King that his questions were inappropriate on the last night’s Larry King Live show. She took off her microphone and threatened to walk off the show.

Carrie Prejean caused a stir at the Miss USA pageant earlier this year with an answer to a question about gay marriage posed by Miss USA judge Perez Hilton. Her answer was:

“We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

Bipana Thapa is one of the most successful actresses in Nepali film industry. She started her acting career in a movie named ‘Janmabhumi’ in 1995. In her acting career, Bipana has acted in more than 100 movies.

Apart from acting, Bipana was also running a fashion store named Bipanaz Boutique, located at Bhatbhateni, Kathmandu. Bipana’s love for fashion designing helped her to also work as the designer in some of the films she had worked as an actress.

In 2008, Bipana married an Indian national. The wedding party was held at Hotel Annapurna on April 27, 2008. After the marriage, Bipana left Nepal with her husband and had stopped acting in movies. In her home in India, she gave birth to a son and is living as a responsible housewife and a mother.

UPDATE: After the April 2015 earthquake, Bipana had also arrived in Kathmandu with earthquake relief materials for the victims. According to a report in Nepaliactress the relief materials were loaded in three trucks and also included a mini-truck of medicine for the victims.

Hari Bansha Acharya, one of the MaHa-duo, was born to Homanjaya Acharya and Ganesh Kumari on 27th Kartik 2014 BS (9th October 1958) in Gairidhara, Kathmandu. In 2040 BS he married Meera Acharya with whom he has two sons, Trilok Acharya and Mohit Acharya.

He started his entertainment career with a performance in Radio Nepal with Hari Prasad Rimal and Jitendra Mahat Avilashi in 2031 BS. He joined Rastriya Naach Ghar, a theater in Kathmandu, in 2032. His solo performance in the Gaijatra Mahotsav of 2034 BS was the first successful event before partnering with Madan Krishna Shrestha. Prachanda dances while Rekha Thapa sings

CPN Maoist are protesting for “people’s supremacy” and their own supremacy in the government for the last few days. Yesterday, they were encircling Singh Durbar, the government headquarter. More than 100 thousand people were brought in Kathmandu for the event. One person died when a bus carrying the protestors to Kathmandu met with an accident. The protest was mostly peaceful except an incident of clash with the police at one location. The protestor were dancing on street as usual.

In yesterday’s event film artists were also present to support the protest. A rare sight – Maoist supreme Puspa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) was dancing on a song “Lalu-pate nughyo bhui tira …” sung by one of the leading actress of Nepali movies, Rekha Thapa.

Top 10 countries to travel in 2010 – Nepal

If you ask me, I would always say Nepal is the best place in earth. :) Well, I am a Nepali but I am not alone – there are many who think so.

Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide-book and digital media publisher in the world, has prepared a list of top 10 countries to travel in 2010. It is good to know that Nepal is one of them.

It is not clear what ranking Nepal is in in the list but it sure is good to know people think Nepal one of the best places in the world. Some news sites like Nepalnews said Nepal was 6th in the ranking – which is not true. The countries are listed alphabetically and hence Nepal is sixth in the publication. That doesn’t mean Nepal is sixth in ranking. It can be first or can also be tenth.

Miss Nepal Zenisha Moktan is seen in a photo session in London, UK with her renewed smile, in the preparation of the Miss World 2009, to be held on December 12 in South Africa.

In the photo above, Zenisha is at the center of the first row, in black dress. Last year we didn’t have a Miss Nepal to represent the event. Let’s wish Zenisha all the best to win Miss World or any other titles and make history.

Meanwhile, Miss Nepal first runner-up Richa Thapa Magar is participating in Miss Earth. For the contest of Miss Photogenic, voting held at Facebook, she is leading with more than 700 votes. Internet-based prostitution racket busted in Kathmandu

The 21 year old “Mr. John” (Amit Gautam) of Samakhusi Kathmandu is arrested in Kathmandu along with students, models and celebrities (the word is misspelled in the website). Amit, who was arrested in Naxal, was acting as contact point for the website based prostitution in Nepal. The racket is actually led by Indian in New Delhi and the girls were being supplied mainly to Indian nationals visiting Nepal. Amit was being helped by Sangita Shrestha

Sangeeta Shrestha, 33, a resident of Tahachal who was mastermind in arranging girls for the business was also arrested from her home.
