Shri Krishna Shrestha – Nepali actor, producer

SAD news – Shree Krishna Shrestha died on August 9, 2014 in Apolo Hospital, Delhi, India because of pneumonia. Shree’s last movie ‘Kohinoor’ was released a day before on August 8. He had a long affair with the actress Sweta Khadka and got married a month before the death. Shree and Sweta were told to be in a honeymoon tour to India where he died.

Shree debuted in Nepali film industry in ‘Bhumari’ in 2045 BS as a short role as a college boy. He was a friend of the lead actor in ‘Kasam’, a villain in ‘Pukar’ before debuting in lead role. In 2049 he worked in lead role in Chhabi Raj Ojha production movie ‘Nata’.

Solar-Car-Kid got insurance

The 16 year-old, Kusal KC, who made headline last week by constructing a solar car, all by himself, is being congratulated and is provided with an insurance by General Insurance Co. Ltd. Nepal.

In Nepal, a 16 year old kid is not authorized to get a driving license. One has to be at least 18 years old to drive a vehicle. I don’t know what the Rs. 600,000 car insurance and Rs. 200,000 accident insurance means to Kushal when he can’t drive (source – nayapatrika).

It is good to know that talent is being appreciated by people. He collected Rs. 15,000 during the car show last week. The District Development Committee has decided to give Rs. 50,000 to Kusal. All these helps will go to pay the loan he took while constructing the car. I hope more organizations and individuals will come forward to help and encourage the whizz kid.

Pooja Lama scandal .. who next?

In a latest news, it is told that another Nepali actress, Pooja Lama, has become victim of a sex scandal. Lama, a Nepali model, singer, and actress is considered one of the boldest model. In the video, Pooja can be clearly seen as her partner is films it. Pooja is well aware of the recording and looks like the video recording is done in mutual agreement.

I haven’t seen the video and don’t know much about it. Those who have seen it have told that the video is filmed in a room with Pooja’s photo on the background. The couple is talking in English (as in Namrata’s video). The video is very short (only 1:23 minutes in length) as compared to about half an hour video of Namrata Shrestha. It is to be seen if more of her videos in the series will be released in the future.

Pooja is wearing a white dress and a dog can also be seen in the video. The the door is left wide open during the act in her room. Although Pooja can be easily be recognized in the video, face of her partner is not shown.

H1N1 and Common Cold Compared

In this flu season, apart from the regular cold, we have to deal with the deadly H1N1 (swine flu). Everybody is talking about the danger but how many of us can difference between a regular flu and H1N1?

Here is a simple comparison between the common cold and H1N1 Flu:

Symptom

Fever

Fever is rare with a cold.

Fever is usually present with the flu in up to 80% of all flu cases. A temperature of 100°F or higher for 3 to 4 days is associated with the H1N1 flu.

Coughing

A hacking, productive (mucus- producing) cough is often present with a cold.

A non-productive (non-mucus producing) cough is usually present with the H1N1 flu (sometimes referred to as dry cough).

Aches

Slight body aches and pains can be part of a cold.

Severe aches and pains are common with the H1N1 flu.

Stuffy Nose

Stuffy nose is commonly present with a cold and typically resolves spontaneously within a week.

Stuffy nose is not commonly present with the H1N1 flu.

Chills

Chills are uncommon with a cold.

60% of people who have the H1N1 flu experience chills.

Tiredness

Tiredness is fairly mild with a cold.

Tiredness is moderate to severe with the H1N1 flu.

Sneezing

Sneezing is commonly present with a cold.

Sneezing is not common with the H1N1 flu.

Sudden Symptoms

Cold symptoms tend to develop over a few days.

The H1N1 flu has a rapid onset within 3-6 hours. The flu hits hard and includes sudden symptoms like high fever, aches and pains.

Headache

A headache is fairly uncommon with a cold.

A headache is very common with the H1N1 flu, present in 80% of flu cases.

Sore Throat

Sore throat is commonly present with a cold.

16 year old Kushal made a Solar Car

With skyrocketing gas price, global warming, pollution; solar is the best alternative to fuel the future vehicles.

A 16-year-old, 10 grader, with no formal trainings, surprised everybody in Baglung, Western Nepal, with the successful trial run of a self-made solar vehicle, “Kushal Solar Car”.

Kushal KC of Amrit Adarsha Higher Secondary School built a 3 seat solar car in 42 days. The car has six 20-watt panels in the front, rear and roof of the vehicle to power it while driving. In the absence of sunlight, 20 batteries (18 Amp) power the vehicle. The vehicle can run at a maximum speed of up to 60kmph.

Is There a Flaw in Archimedes’ Principle? Ask Bhabindra.

Bhabindra Kunwar, a graduate student in Physics in Nepal, claimed that the good old Archimedes’ principle, that almost all kids learn at school, is not true.

Any object, wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. (Archimedes’ principle)

Kunwar’s test however show that the weight of the displaced liquid can be more or less or equal to the immersed object. For example, a paper glass with 100 gram water can easily be buoyed by another glass containing 25 gram water. The displaced water in this case would be less than 25 gram to uplift 100 gram object.

Whenever somebody claims that they have discovered something – the first question that comes in my mind is – how could the simple fact be overlooked for such a long time.

I am still with Archimedes but would be the happiest person if Kunwar could prove his inventions in the international arena. All the best Bhabindra! (Read more in Nepali nayapatrika (the article is no longer available)

UPDATE: In 2017, this guy is still making news in media. Although nobody in scientific community acknowledge the existence of Bhabindra Kunwar, he somehow convinces the news media to talk about him.

Working in the field of Physics for about a decade, claiming all sort of discoveries and questioning many well established theories, claiming to have published big books – and still being a nobody is really exceptional!!

Go on Bhabendra — may be some day you get lucky and actually invent something! I truly believe you can do that!

Miss Pearl Hong Kong 2009 is Deepa Gurung

Deepa Gurung, 18, from Pokhara, won the first Miss Pearl Hong Kong 2009 title in an event held in Hong Kong on 24 October, 2009. Deepa’s sister Jyoti Gurung, 16, won the second runner up and Roji Pun, 16, got the first runner up.

Among the 13 contestants, 9 contestants won one of the contest titles. The sisters, Deepa and Jyoti, apart from being Miss Pearl  and second runner-up also won Miss Angel and Miss Charming titles respectively. Pabitra Gurung won Miss Personality title, Roma Ghale was Miss Genius, Sumin Gurung was Miss Catwalk, Sunita Gurung was Miss Attitude, Susmita Limbu was Miss Entertainer, Roji Pun the Miss Online Popular votes, and Soni Limbu got Miss Figure titles.

Title winner Deepa Gurung wants to become architect or an interior designer in future and doesn’t like chocolate. We wish all the best for her bright future.

‘Dari’ and its types

There has been a great discussion and a long series of disagreement on the categorization of ‘dari’. But recently national dari conference October 2009 held on Kathmandu has come across an agreement according to which dari is categorized on the basis of it’s allocation, the way it looks and the personality, attitude and behavior that it reflects. Finally, we have four types of dari which are explained below:

  1. Imandari (इमान्दारी): Imandari, located just above the upper lips and below the nose    represent an honesty of a man.
  2. Hawadari (हवलदारी): Hawadari, located just below the lower lips represent a sense of humor in a person.
  3. Bokedari (बोकेदारी): Bokedari, located just beneath the hawadari represent the sexual attitude of a man.
  4. Dikdari (दिक्दारी): Dikdari, located on either side of the cheeks represent boredom of a person.

Hence, this classification of dari has helped us to identify our character and can be probably used for better modification and understanding of our life.

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9, 1963 and she died suddenly on February 11, 2012. The American singer, actress, producer, and model was also included in the 2009 edition of Guinness World Records as being the most awarded female act of all time.

Houston is one of pop music’s best-selling music artists of all-time, with an estimated 170–200 million records sold worldwide. In her lifetime, she released seven studio albums and two soundtrack albums, all of which had been diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification. American recording artist, actress, and former fashion model, Whitney Houston’s comeback effort was nearly derailed by a wardrobe malfunction on a live-televised show, The X Factor, on Sunday. It wasn’t that much a disaster. The bra-style bodice unlatched in the back midway through her song and flapped open for the remainder of her performance.

Some saw the awesome voice coming back and others choose to differ. The dress that was too tight on top, too loose around the middle, and too long on her legs, didn’t go with the artist for sure.

One leg is enough for Roma Neupane

Roma Neupane from Ithari, Nepal lived with “double discrimination; first, as woman and second, as a handicapped person". Now, she has learned to stand on her own foot (a single foot), dance on it, and fight against discrimination. Yes, one leg is enough for Roma these days.

Roma lost her left leg at the age of 8 on a road accident. Dancing was her passion and the lost leg couldn’t stop her. She practiced and took training (1 month long) and danced in many stage programs on her single leg.

That is not all – she learned knitting, sewing and computing (here is the proof). She has established a NGO dedicated for the disabled, she is interested in politics and wants to be a successful leader.

Some five years back in August of 2004 an Israeli ambassador Dan Ben- Eliezer who was impressed by Roma’s dance helped Roma to visit Israel and have an artificial leg.

I wrote about Narsingh Bhandari Magar a few days back. One leg is enough for Narsingh too. He didn’t go to school, didn’t take dance lessons, he doesn’t have a website, but he also dances, supports his family and entertain his fellow villagers. Narsingh and Roma, both handicapped with one missing leg, are successful in their own ways. One has excelled in his village life and other has learned and prepared herself to live in an urban area.

Scandal, Journalism Ethics, BBC and Nayapatrika

The Namrata Shrestha sex scandal has created a huge impact not only in Nepalese film industry but also started debate on ethics in journalism. BBC Nepali aired a program “Nepal Samdarva” (sorry, the audio link is removed from BBC)  in which Rabindra Mishra questioned on the ethics of Nepali journalist to bring out the news to general public. Mishra called upon the editor of Nayapatrika Dainik, Krishna Jwala Devkota, and Journalism Professor, P. Kharel, to talk on the issue. Kharel says that the video is personal and it should haven’t have been a news but Krishna defended on being it a public news.

Till date, it is not known who released the tape in YouTube. Internet, by its vary nature is ruthless in distributing content around the world. In a matter of hours the video was distributed all around the world like a wild fire. Some noted newspapers like Kantipur, Nagariknews didn’t thought it newsworthy (however they featured articles on the subject, later). But others like Dainikee, Nayapatrika wrote front page articles on their issues. This shows division on mainstream journalist on prioritizing news for publication. Some thought it a personal matter and others consider it a public concern. We first thought that it was an attempt to defame the artist but it later turned out to be the real Namarta. It shouldn’t have been released in internet in the first place… once it is out one can’t control it. Turning a blind eye on it might even backfire. People should be given an opportunity to learn from others’ mistakes.
