Road literature – Priceless love

A heart touching piece written on the back of a truck was captured by journalist Dipak Bhattarai.

Shundar rahechha timro muhar ma dukhile chinna sakina
Amulya rahechha timro maya ma garib le kinna sakina…

I tried translating it, but couldn’t replicate its sweetness. So, all I can say about the piece in English is the essence of the lines: "I couldn’t buy your love because it was priceless."

Risky commute – Kathmandu street

Travelling on a goods carrier in itself is risky. Travelling in excess of it’s capacity is riskier. It is not only risky for the travellers, it is also a hazard for other vehicles. And, motorbikes are not designed to transport animals. Animal behaviors can not be predicted and unexpected behavior of the goat can not only cause harm to the commuters on the motorbike, but also other vehicles around it.

Do they have traffic rules in Kathmandu? If there are, why aren’t they implemented?

Is it not only the responsibility of the traffic police to control s
uch risky travel. Safety awareness in the commuters and the drivers is equally important.

But, a hefty fine would certainly help in reducing such an unsafe practice. (Photo received from Rajan Timilsina, one of our readers)

Writ at Supreme Court against Govt. decision to pardon Dhungel

A writ has been filed at the Supreme Court on Thursday against the government’s decision made on last Tuesday to recommend President Dr Ram Baran Yadav for granting general amnesty to Maoist Lawmaker Bal Krishna Dhungel, a murder convict

The Maoist leading government had decided to recommend Dhungel’s case to the president for granting amnesty citing it was a “political case” related to the conflict era, which could be withdrawn as per the Comprehensive Peace Accord.

The writ was filed by Sabitri Shrestha, sister of Ujjan Kumar Shrestha, who was killed by Dhungel during Maoist insurgency. The Supreme Court had announced life imprisonment along with confiscation of all property against Dhungel after finding him guilty of murder following abduction of Ujjan.

In the meantime, human rights organizations, political parties and political leaders have condemned the government decision to recommend pardon for Dhungel.

Two main opposition parties, Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are demanding the government to withdraw the decision.

Madhesi People´s Rights Forum (MPRF) Nepal said such a move will encourage grave human rights violations in the country.

Chairman of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-N), Kamal Thapa has said that the Cabinet decision was a mockery of rule of law.

Geek slipper – wearing the keyboard

Who would want a keyboard designed slipper? I am sure it won’t be that comfortable wearing this oddly designed footwear.

I wouldn’t want to own such a footwear because:

  • It sucks when you can’t wear and show off your design at the same time.
  • I doesn’t follow the foot contour.
  • It would most probably be the most uncomfortable footwear with the "enter" key pressing the under-sole.
