Miss Nepal Controversies (1994 – 2019)

It has been 25 years since the first Miss Nepal beauty contest was held in Nepal. After the first Miss Nepal was crowned in 1994 there had been various occasions in which the public had expressed their dissatisfaction on the choice of the judges. In most of the contests, there are always controversies because choosing a beauty contest winner is not a straight forward as choosing between black and white.

Here are the list of controversies Miss Nepal had went through in the history:

Miss Nepal 1997

The first controversy of Miss Nepal was in the third edition of the contest. The contest was originally organized by Kathmandu Jaycees. The people behind the contest were Gopal Kakshapati and the team. By the time of the third contest, the team was out of the organization and they decided to organize their own version of the beauty contest. For that Gopal and the team registered a company The Hidden Treasure and acquired the Miss World franchise. The winner of the contest was going to Miss World beauty contest. The original Miss World used to send the winner to Philippines based contest, Miss Asia Pacific International.

Nirvana Bhandary – a random Nepali model

I am sharing a the thoughts of a girl I found in Instagram. Nrivana Bhandary says:

I was born a very fair girl in Kathmandu, and I remember how my mother would be showered with compliments about how gori, and thus beautiful I was. The fair & lovely fairy.

Was I privileged because of this, even as a child? Probably, but it was invisible to me because a privileged person does not know they are privileged until they hear the stories of the oppressed. And I did not hear these stories.

In the 90s we hadn’t yet found the vocabulary to describe the discrimination dark-skinned South Asians face compared to lighter-skinned South Asians. Now we call this colourism.

Under the influence of an upbringing in the west I learned that being tan was the epitome of cool and came to value it. I too started laying on the beach for hours on end in my tiniest bikini.

I think that the western mentality regarding tans is on the right track in some ways. South-Asians shun the sun like they are vampires. They stay indoors as much as possible because they are scared that the evil sun will mar their beauty, make them dark and unattractive. But to be outdoors enjoying nature, being kissed by the sun, is undoubtably one of the most pleasurable experiences in life. Why deny oneself that?

And she says:

Miss Earth 2019: Riya Basnet is representing Nepal as Miss Earth Nepal 2019

The Miss Nepal Earth 2019, Riya Basnet, went to Philipines to participate in the Miss Earth beauty contest last week. She wrote:

Today as I am about to embark for another big adventure of my life, I recall the times when the thought of standing at the stage gave me chills. For a reserved child like me, who suffered from social anxiety, just taking part in the Miss Nepal was far beyond my imagination. Winning Miss Nepal itself was something that I never dared to dream as a child. But the time I starting daring, I couldn’t stop dreaming. With time, I started believing that anything is possible when you have faith in yourself. And that faith guided me towards the path of Miss Nepal 2019.

However, today’s not about me. Today’s about all those hands that were there to pick me up, every time I fall, to all those eyes that were able to see in me, what I used to deny in myself, to all those shoulder that I could lean on every-time I felt low, and to all those voices that uplifted at times of self disbeliefs. Today’s about all the people without whom I would not have experienced some of the most challenging yet empowering moments of my life. Thank you for having my back through it all. . . the mountainous highs, and the depths of hell.

Like I always say, “I am going to bring the crown home, if not for me, for all the people who believed in me more than I did.” Thank you for believing in me first.

Sitasma Chand, Miss Nepal 2007, Father’s day message

Miss Nepal 2007, Sitashma Chand, lost her father when she was 15-years-old. She says, she has almost forgotten what it felt like to be a little daddy’s girl.

Sitashma says, “My family says I was his favourite as I was his youngest. Just the thought of being a daddy’s girl makes me so happy but I wonder how it felt then… it’s been too long.”

She says, she doesn’t even dream of her father much. “I saw him in my dreams once after he left us. Just once. It’s strange why I don’t dream of him as much as my sisters do. I’m sure he’s watching over me after all these years. I miss him.”

For those who have their parents, Sitashma’s request is to, “Love, respect and cherish your parents while you can. You might have fought with them, you might have had differences, you might have created your own family and not value them as much as you used to. Remember, life is uncertain.”

She adds, “If you are reading this and are lucky to have your father with you or a call away…. go hug them or call them (on my behalf too) and tell them how much you love them. Don’t wait till Father’s day.”

And this is her mother:

Shrinkhala got into Religion trouble again !

Last time it was Christianity. She distributed Santa Clause things during Christmas to poor kids and was accused of promoting Christianity to poor unsuspecting kids. She did that for the kid’s fun and entertainment.

Now, she is being the target of Muslim people in Nepal. There was a fashion show featuring hijab and Shrinkhala along with actress Priyanka Karki and banker Raveena Desraj participated in the fashion show. But, their participation was controversial.

This is what people think – “Now Promoting hijab. Next promote burqa. Next promote sharia law in Nepal. And next stone a woman to death in Tudikhel for marrying someone she chooses.”

One commenter says: “I am extremly disappionted @shrinkhala_ ..Hijab is a symbol of women oppression ..I am not against the people who wears it because its their choice but please do not encourage it ..it should not be something you celebrate.”

Barsha Raut troll and Namrata Shrestha and Priyanka Karki conflicting responses

Two actresses have totally different approach on the troll that has been going on in the internet.

A usually sober actress, Barsha Raut, appeared in a revealing cloth in the premier of her film ‘Jatrai Jatra’ in Sydney, Australia. That is in contrast of the perception that Barsha doesn’t prefer showing off her body. When the trolls start to surface, Barsha’s husband responded by telling that he was supportive of Barsha (video temporarily removed).

Then came Priyanka Karki. The actress often being trolled herself also supported Barsha and wasn’t happy for those taking the issue negatively. Priyanka Karki in her Instagram post wrote: For all the peopel sying the dress is too ‘low cut’ she should have worn something sober … the dress is too ‘revealing’, you shouldn’t have done that for publicity …
NO! You (the ones saying the most demeaning and disrespectful stufd about a woman. YES YOU!) Actually you’re too ‘judgmental’ and you need to STOP THAT SHIT! NOW!”
