Haritalika Teej being celebrated

Sep 1, 2011 @ 14:39

Hindu women all over the country were celebrating Haritlika Teej on Wednesday by worshipping lord Shiva and fasting for marital bliss

Women clad in red Sari visit Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu, Kumbheshwar in Lalitpur and the nearby Shiva temples in other parts of the country. According to Hindu ritual, married women take fast for the whole day for the prosperity of their husband whereas unmarried women take fast to be blessed with a caring and a loving husband.

During fast, some women even abstain from drinking water throughout the day, while others consider even swallowing saliva as a sin.

Originally, Teej was a three day festival that falls on the end of August or early September. The first day is called ‘Dar Khane Din’, the second is a ‘fasting day’ and the third day is called ‘Rishi Panchami’ in Nepal which is a day to perform the Teej Puja. The festival commemorates Parvati’s union with Lord Shiva and is celebrated for marital bliss, well-being of spouse and children and purification of own body and soul.

To manage the crowd in the Pashupati area, around 3,000 security personnel have been deployed. Considering the essence of the festival, the District Administration Office has prohibited the use or sale of non-vegetarian items and drugs on the temple premises.

History of Nepali Literature

Nepali Language has evolved from Sanskrit. Initially, Nepali language was termed as “Gorkhali” or  “Khas” language but the king Prithivi Narayan Shah united the country, it got its name Nepali.

The oldest evidence found written in Nepali Language is Ashok Chilla’s bronze plate, carved in 1321 B.S. The oldest book written in Nepali language found to date is ‘Khanda Khadya‘ (1642). The writer of the book however is not known.

Other ancient books without their author’s name are ‘Swasthani Bharatkatha’ written sometime in 1658 BS and ‘Baj Parikxya‘ written sometime in 1700. The oldest known writer of Nepali books is Prem Nidhi Pant. Two of his books ‘Jwarup Pati Chikitsha‘ written in 1773 BS and ‘Prayashit Predi’ were both translation from Sanskrit books.

Dr. Tara Nath Sharma, has divided the history of Nepali Literature into 5 different eras:

  1. Pre Bhanu Bhakta Era (from beginning to 1871 B.S.)
  2. Bhanu Bhakta Era (from 1872 B.S. to 1936 B.S.)
  3. Moti Ram Era  (from 1940B.S. to 1976 B.S.)
  4. Pre Revolution Era  (from 1977 B.S. to 2007 B.S.)
  5. Post Revolution Era  (from 2007 B.S. to present.)

Baburam with Obama – a Nepali flag would have made it nicer

In the following photo, our Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai and Hisila Yami are posing with the US President Barak Obama and Michelle Obama. The smile are great on all four faces but a bit odd are the flags – none of them has a Chandra and a Surya. The US flag represents Obama couple but there is no Nepali flag to represent the Bhattarai couple.

By the way the photo is taken, it is pretty clear that the photo is not a causal one and they meant it to be as official as they can.

The Americans would certainly not care to have an odd looking Nepali flag there but, the advisors of our PM should have pointed out the obvious – to have one of those flags to be a Nepali flag. I think, our PM should have asked to take the photo somewhere else if they were not willing to hoist our flag.

Some have even pointed out the fact that the tie on Baburam’s neck look a bit bigger than it should have and a saree would have looked better on Hisila. I don’t have such preference towards Daura Suruwal (and, I guess, it is no longer a National dress). But, the flag is a different case.

Street patrolling cows in Kathmandu Metropolitan City

It is strange, how come cows are roaming around in the roads of capital city. Due to traffic congestion, there are various restrictions for some vehicles in many roads (some vehicles that are restricted are – Chinese tractor, hand driven cargo carts, diesel auto-rickshaw, pedal driven rickshaw, big trucks, buses and so on).

But, cows are free to roam around without any restrictions.

Balkrishna Dahal took some photos to show some examples of how the cows roam around the city – unrestricted. There isn’t any statistics on how many accidents have occurred due to the presence of animal on the road. But, it should be something the authorities should be concerned about.
