Maharajah Dev Shamsher JBR (1862 – 1914), prime minister of Nepal for 144 days in 1901 AD
Dev Shamsher known as reformist Prime Minister was the fourth of 17 sons born to the Chief of the Army Dhir Shamsher Rana (a younger brother of Jang Bahadur) and Rani Nanda Kumari, niece of Bhimsen Thapa and Mathbar Singh Thapa who were both prime ministers of Nepal.
His father and brothers had difficulties in maintaining a huge family. The Shamshers were poorer than the Jung Bahadur’s family and other cousins. To ease the burden on Dhir Shamsher, Dev Shamsher was adopted at a very young age by his father’s childless elder brother, General Krishna Bahadur Kunwar Rana and was raised by him and his wife.
Dev Shamsher had wanted to start a parliamentary system, and he was very impressed by the system in Great Britain. But, his reforms were not liked his brothers. He was later forced to resign by a coalition of his brothers (Chandra Shamsher and others) who opposed to hi
s progressive policies, and was forced to take refuge to India.

We had previously talked about people’s leader, CPN Maoist Chairman, Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s move to a lavish residence. The ownership or the lease amount hasn’t been confirmed yet and he has kept his mouth shut on the issue.
Now, Prachanda’s new residence has started attracting the attention of international media questioning his credibility as a lead
er of poor people.
UK newspaper The Telegraph has published an article titled "Nepali Maoist leader adopts millionaire’s lifestyle." The article mentions his role in overthrowing monarchy and his ultimate adoption of royal lifestyle.
The leader of Nepal’s ruling Maoists, who led the country’s downtrodden masses in the guerrilla war which eventually overthrew its monarchy, has provoked a row among his comrades after acquiring a luxury mansion with a swimming pool and badminton court.
Indian newspaper Indian Express published an article today titled "Prachanda moves into lavish house; media slams ‘red feudalism’ " in which the reporter writes:

As announced earlier, 13 student wings of nine different political parties, including the ruling party, have forced-close the Kathmandu valley on January 25. There are no vehicles on the street and the businesses are also closed. The only vehicles allowed on the road are press vehicle, ambulance, and vehicles of foreign embassies.
The youth organizations have announced that they won’t even sit in negotiation table until the government takes back the recent price hike. Here are some of the scenes seen in Kathmandu streets:
It shouldn’t have been a big deal whether the Maoist Chairman , Prachanda, purchased or leased the new residence. Everybody needs a residence and a leader like Prachanda wouldn’t fit in a small house. At the same time, leaders needs to be transparent on everything they do and shouldn’t try to hide things specially related to financial dealings.
Prachanda’s son Prakash, in his Facebook post, told that the new residence is leased f
or Rs. 60,000 a month. The quoted lease amount is believed to be extremely cheap for such a building made on a land of three ropani. There was a rumor that the building wasn’t leased but purchased. A weekly newspaper, Sanghu, has published a details on the purchase of the building and asked Prachanda to be transparent on the financial dealings on the purchase of the new residence.

2017 Update: Prachanda’s son, Prakash Dahal has also died on November 19, 2017. In the mean time, Prachanda has also lost a daughter to cancer. I have prepared a video report on the death of his immediate family members in the time of peace.
The response to the death of Prakash is mixed. A lot of people who had been affected by the Maoist civil war have told that, Prachanda is punished for is bad deeds. Others believe that the deceased soul shouldn’t be debated on and we should wish it to rest in peace. But, people’s thoughts and beliefs can’t be changed easily. So, I believe it is good to have our own views but, we can’t instruct others on behaving according to our choice. As long as it is not illegal and punishable, people should be free to express their opinion.

Nepali Language has evolved from Sanskrit. Initially, Nepali language was termed as “Gorkhali” or “Khas” language but the king Prithivi Narayan Shah united the country, it got its name Nepali.
The oldest evidence found written in Nepali Language is Ashok Chilla’s bronze plate, carved in 1321 B.S. The oldest book written in Nepali language found to date is ‘Khanda Khadya‘ (1642). The writer of the book however is not known.
Other ancient books without their author’s name are ‘Swasthani Bharatkatha’ written sometime in 1658 BS and ‘Baj Parikxya‘ written sometime in 1700. The oldest known writer of Nepali books is Prem Nidhi Pant. Two of his books ‘Jwarup Pati Chikitsha‘ written in 1773 BS and ‘Prayashit Predi’ were both translation from Sanskrit books.
