The year started with the sad demise of Bishnu Bhakta Phuyal. The death of senior comedy actor, aged 80, was sudden and surprising as he was performing on-stage while he died. Phuyal died on January 3, 2017 on stage at Rastriya Naachghar. He was pronounced dead when he was rushed to the hospital from the stage. (Read full report and video report here)

At the age of 72, Prema Shah has died in the USA on December 20, 2017. She was not only the mother well known actress Jal Shah, she is a well known literary figure herself.
Born on Ashad 16, 2002 BS at Shreepur of Birgunj, Prema lived in Kathmandu at her maternal uncle’s home in an early age. He grew up in the care of a nanny in Kathmandu, Tuasidevi Upadhaya Koirala. She completed her schooling from Adarsha Kanya Niketan at Mangalbazar, Patan in 2016 BS after completion of her SLC. After that she went to Patan College where she completed her Bahelors degree. Kancha is the first presentation of Shivapuri Films by Diamond Singh Malla. The director, Surya Bohara had written the story script and the dialogue of the movie. The movie featuring Karishma, Jal Shah was one of the hit movies of the time. After a long gap, Surya Bohara had produced ‘Mutu’ and ‘Thuli’ in the year 2014.
This xNepali movie features superstar of the Nepali film industry, Rajesh Hamal, with one of his most liked online-couple, Karishma Manandhar. Rajesh Hamal and Jal Shah is another most liked couple at that time. Both Karishma and Jal went to USA and didn’t return back for a while. Although Karishma returned back to restart acting, Jal is still in the USA. Actress Jal Shah is in Nepal for Dashain and Tihar this year with her 8-years-old daughter Kalas. She is planning to cook ‘sel’ the sweet bread popular during tihar. Last year, Jal had offered tika to actor Dilip Rayamajhi.
Actor Ramesh Upreti is not celebrating this year because of the death of his grandfather. Although there won’t be Tika and won’t be much fun at home, he will meet and celebrate with his friends.
Ashishma Nakarmi doesn’t have brothers. So, she hasn’t celebrated bhai-tika yet. She enjoys the festival with her friends and family.
Nepali movie ‘Avatar’ is a presentation of Balkrishna Tuladhar for Padhma Pictures is a revenge love story. Simant is the new actor in the movie. The child artist in the movie is Master Ashish. Actors Deepak Chhetri and Sudhanshu Joshi are featured in special guest appearance. The chief assistant director is Nilhari Kafle, editing by Narendra Khadka, action by Rajendra Khadgi, cinematography by Javed Shah. Choreographers are Basanta Jung Rayamajhi and Kamal Rai. Actor Rajesh Hamal is currently in the USA. He was invited by actress Jal Shah to participate in a cultural program held in Salt Lake City on November 1. After the program, Rajesh is meeting his relatives and having fun. I have compiled photos Rajesh has shared to give you the glimpse of the places he went and the people he met.

The second biggest festival in Nepal after Dashain, Tihar has been wrapped up on Friday November 13. The last day of Tihar – Bhai Tika is celebrated by brothers and sisters to show their love and dedication to each other. On the occasion, despite of economic blockade from India, people have followed the tradition. Update
The beauty of Bhai Tika is that people make new brothers and sisters during the festival. For example, Takme Budha (Wilson Bikram Rai) and Ashma DC and Sanyukta Puri, Jal Shah and Bikrant Basnet, Nisha Sunar and Suman Budha Magar, Naresh Bhattarai and Sapana Chamling Rai became new brothers/sisters this year.
Singer, journalist and actress Komal Oli made this year’s Bhai Tika memorable by presenting 2-litres petrol to each of her brothers. At the time of petrol-crisis in Nepal, that would certainly made the happiest brothers.
Comedy actress Palpasa Dangol, popularly known as Chamsuri has urine infection and was rushed to emergency room in Teaching Hospital right before Bhai Tika. As she had to be treated in the hospital, her brothers visited Dangol in hospital bed to take Bhai Tika. Palpasa has told that that was one of the most memorable Bhai Tika in her life.
A cultural program titled “Nepali Pan Nepali Maan Ramailo Sanjh” with Nepali artists was organized at Salt Lake City, Utah on November 1. The program was special in the sense that actress Jal Shah organized the program and actor Rajesh Hamal was the chief guest from Nepal.
With Rajesh Hamal the program also featured actor Dilip Rayamajhi, actress Arunima Lamsal, singer Ram Krishna Dhaka, singer Yam Baral, singer Nisha Sunar, singer Sangita Thapa Magar and others. Other artists include choreographer Nabin KC and Luna Shrestha.
Nepali movie ‘Malati’ produced under Golden Eyes Cinemakers is an old movie featuring Shiva Shrestha with Jal Shah. There is another another movie of similar name ‘Malati ko Bhatti’ (watch ‘Malati Ko Bhatti’ here). Singer Yam Baral is also featured in the movie at around 1:20:30.
