Home Minister commits to remove fake landless squatters from river banks

Mar 1, 2012 @ 18:31

In a discussion programme organized by the High Level Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee on Wednesday, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Bijay Kumar Gachhadar expressed his commitment to remove the fake landless squatters residing along the river banks in the Kathmandu Valley.

Home Minister Gachhadar questioned how people can be called landless squatters when they are living encroaching public land by constructing RCC buildings.

According to RSS, he said he had requested top leaders of the big three parties frequently for their support. He further said to remove fake landless squatters at any expense, and warned he will rather settle other people in Tundikhel, if they did not support him for the same.

Similarly, Minister for Physical Planning and Works Hyridayesh Tripathi said that the government was committed to conserve the river banks in the Kathmandu Valley.

Earlier in January, the Ministry of Physical Planning and Works had tasked the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC) with registering the squatters to identify real landless squatters.

Only 12 percent of the around 8,000 people living on the river banks filed applications for registering themselves as squatters.

According to the study of the government, more than 1,500 ropanis (76.3 hectares) of land have been encroached by the squatters on the banks of Bagmati, Bishnumati, Manohara and Dhobikhola rivers in the valley.

Children imitating the act of film stars

Children do what they see. Children learn from imitating other’s act. They imitate what others do without thinking whether it is good or not. If they imitate good one, that will give good result. But if they imitate wrong thing, it may lead them to wrong way and even may harm them and others.

Likewise, they like to imitate the act of film stars too. While imitating such act in Taplejung, bad incident has occurred.

11 years old Keshar Purtel has got injured while imitating the act of famous Nepali fiim star Nikhil Uprety. Keshar poured kerosene on himself and lit the fire.

According to Keshar’s father, grade 3 student of local Bhagwati Primary School imitated Uprety’s act while playing with friends. Neighbor put off the fire after seeing Keshar burning. Treatment of injured Keshar is going on in Panchthar Hospital.

According to media report, similar incident has occurred earlier too in Nepalgunj and one boy jumped from terrace imitating the act of actor Biraj Bhatta.

Such repition of bad incidents demands that something should be done so that they won’t occur again and again in future too.

Is sex good for Nepali film industry?

Chapali height” (watch Chapali Height here) got a good media coverage both before and after release. That was partly because of different controversies the movie was involved in before it was released, and ‘sexual psychology’ highlighted in it’s promotion. Although some have questioned the validity of the claims of its producer that ‘Chapali Height‘ has collected 50 lakhs in a single day, the publicity and viewers in theaters show it should have had a decent  opening. But, one can expect the initial response to fade in lights of negative reviews it is getting from critics and viewers.

Now, the question arises – is the movie getting negative review from viewers just because it has got sexual contents?

Chapali Height‘ compares well with a previous similar movie ‘Pal Pal Ma‘ released about two years ago. The movie ‘Pal Pal Ma‘ had also got an adult certificate from the censor board and it was publicized as the first Nepali movie to get an adult certificate. The ‘A’ certificate itself proved to be a tool of good publicity, and a good business as well. But, in essence, ‘Pal Pal Ma‘ had nothing to win the hearts of its viewers and virtually nobody appreciated it as a movie. In the movie, the topic of sex was only used for publicity and it was used in a vulgar way. (watch Palpalma here)

I think, history is repeating in case of ‘Chapali Height‘ too. In the case of both movies, small group of people liked the movie and the majority didn’t.
