Namrata Shrestha’s latest interview

namrata_shrestha_interview Namrata Shrestha, one of the top model/actress, told that she is currently preparing herself to act on a movie based on a drug addict. She was talking to a journalist of nepalisite.com in her latest interview (video attached below).

The interview probably is the first such public appearance of Namrata after the release of a sex scandal video in September 2009. The scandal however wasn’t mentioned in the interview.

Namrata has proven her acting talent in the movies Sano Sansar and Mero Euta Saathi Chha. Many of the film industry personnel and the film viewers do not want to loose such a talented actress because of a stupid video that was released accidently. The interview seems to be the first step towards the re-establishment of Namrata’s acting career. Previously, she was also rumored to host the KTV film award show, but she didn’t showed up in the event.

UN Panel regrets estimates on melting of Himalayan glaciers

An international scientific panel overseen by the United Nations had estimated the glaciers in the Himalayas to disappear by 2035. The estimate was included in a 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The group has now expressed “regret” (IPPC statement in PDF) for publishing an unsupported estimate of the speed at which Himalayan glaciers were melting.

It is surprising that none of the 2,500 scientists who contributed to its 2007 report spotted the error that appeared in a sentence on page 493.

We are 'Nepali' not 'Nepalese'

I was thinking of myself – being called ‘Nepalese‘. It sure wasn’t the first time I was called Nepalese, but every time I am called by that adjective I feel a bit odd. The word sounds a bit foreign even if the whole ‘Nepal’ is attached to it.

Let’s fight for ‘Nepali’.

Nepali is our identity, Nepalese isn’t!

Nepali is our own word, Nepalese isn’t.

I called myself “Nepali” my whole life. We sang songs like “Yo Nepali sir uchali …”. There was no ‘Nepalese’ in my early days… not even a trace of it.

Then came this information age. The global village shrunk in size, people came know what Gadhimai mela exactly is, Ram Bahadur Bomjom made international headline, Khagendra Thapa Magar is featured in US magazine, and these are only a few to name. The foreign media (and sometime our own media) portrayed us as Nepalese instead of Nepali. I believe, we are Nepali and there is no word called ‘Nepalese’ in our dictionary.

NYT’s 31st place to go in 2010

New York Times published a list of 31 places to go in 2010. The list starts with Sri Lanka and ends with Nepal.

As a Nepali, am I happy about it? No, I am not.

I was happy when Lonely Planet listed Nepal in its top 10 destination List. But this 31 destination list is different. The paper portrays Nepal as a Gay paradise. The article looks more like advertisement for Sunil Babu Pant, who is promoting gay tourism with his Pink Mountain Travels and Tours, than travel advisory.

… Mr. Pant is offering to hold nuptials at the Mount Everest base camp, jungle safari honeymoons and bridal processions on elephant back.

English Miss Teen, Nepal (update)

This is not another Miss Teen!

There are a couple of videos from one of the Miss Teen events (It is Riddhi Siddhi Miss Teen not the Republica Miss Teen) posted below. Contest, organizers, and location doesn’t really matter here. What matters is how they are organized and trained. The primary language of the event is English and the participant Teens find it really difficult.

I know, the winner of the event might need to participate in international arena. But, does that mean the primary language of the event should be made English when their first language is not English? My first language is not English and at times I find myself short of words while writing here. I have time… I can take forever to post an article and still my English sucks at times. These kids have talked in Nepal all their lives and they had to practice each lines they speak by heart – I am wondering, how can they be creative in the event?

Enough of talks. Let’s see the video and see how funny it looks when the participants introduce themselves in English.
