Maoists ready for new UML government

Dev Gurung, senior leader of the Unified CPN (Maoist) has said that his party will accept a new government under the leadership of CPN (UML). In the current situation, it does not seem like the other political parties will accept a government led by Maoists. Therefore, his party (CPN Maoist) is ready to accept a new government led by CPN (UML).

Though his party should have the first claim for leadership in the country by the virtue of his party being the single largest party in the constitution assembly, Maoists are ready to accept the chairman Jhala Nath Khanal as the new prime minister of Nepal.

The Maoist politburo, however, will defeat the candidacy of Poudel by voting ag
ainst him if the candidacy of NC parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudel for the post of prime minister still stands.

Wikileaks – Maoist used to sell weapons to Indian Naxals

Wikileaks has uncovered the document sent by US Embassy in New Delhi on 18 April 2006 to the State Department in Washington that mentions – “the Indian Government believes the Nepalese Maoists sold arms to the Indian Naxlite”.

However, the document does not show any operational links between the Maoists in Nepal and India.

Nepal: As noted above, the GOI does not believe
that domestic Naxals and Nepalese Maoists maintain any
significant operational links, except for some commercial
arms sales from the Nepalese to the Naxals. Nepalese Maoists,
however, appear to enjoy relatively free movement within
Naxal-held areas in India along the 1,700 km open border.
While we frequently hear reports of Nepalese Maoist
leaders (including the Number 1 and Number 2 Prachanda and
Baburam Bhattarai) spending long periods of time in India
with leftist sympathizers, the GOI has assured us repeatedly
that it gives no quarter to Nepalese Maoists, and several
high-ranking Maoists are being held in Indian jails.

Yet another cable sent earlier this year from the US Embassy in New Delhi, an embassy official claimed that Nepalese police officers are paid to arrest Tibetan refugees by China. These Tibetan refugees are arrested who are trying to cross the border. This information is contained in a document entitled ‘Update on Tibetan refugee flow’. This information was sent by an unknown official from the embassy.

Rubel shall be punished if found guilty, says Sujata

Sujata Koirala, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Nepal, has assured to assist the government in bringing her son-in-law into justice if found guilty. The Tiger Top incident has taken much hype in past few days. Rubel Chaudhary shall be brought into justice if he is found to be guilty – says Koirala talking to media in Tibhuvan International Airpot on her way back from Indonesia.

“Nobody is above the law” and nobody should be any exception, she adds. However Koirala also adds, “his (Rubel) involvement in illegal activities is baseless and one cannot accuse anybody without proof.”

Sexy Indian spices and English Saxons cities

The other day, I accompanied one of my good friends to a financial institute to sell a concept for a television commercial (TVC). The client suggested showing money or gems as a part of the concept. My friend’s logic was not to show money in the advertisements of banks or financial companies. He said, that will have negative impact on the mass and will not generate result, as expected. This got me thinking. Why not? After all, it is all about money.

In the eastern side of the world, people are shy to talk about sex but, at the same time, they are busy generating more babies compared to the western world. Asia has more than 60% contribution to the world’s 6 billion plus population out of which, China and India combined contribute 2.5 billion. People in the western world are open and freely talk on sex and ideas associated with it. How come their population is a lot less compared to those who believe that sex is a taboo?  Continue reading

Kantipur, you owe me (us) an explanation

[Update: I had written the original post in a hurry so, I have changed some wordings. I hope Kantipur editors will come up with some valid arguments.]

Some people thought that my previous article, Journalism Ethics, Dabur and Miss Nepal, was biased. I want to make myself clear, by telling that, I still believe in the spirit of the article, Indian Embassy – Real Juice – Real motive, and Indian Media, I wrote on August 28. A few points:

  1. Kantipur owes me an explanation. Why didn’t they cover the Miss Nepal event? I am still not convinced Kantipur did something ethical.
  2. Not publishing major news based on one’s personal problem (or, organizational dispute) implies that the Indian Embassy was right in telling our journalists are unethical (even if, it is still baseless).
  3. Am I baised ? Yes, a little bit. Previously, Kantipur writers simply ignored my enquiries through previous articles and emails (on Maya Bazin and Smita Thapa issues). The article was targeted to thick skinned, writers there.

My friend Aakar argued that he thinks Kantipur publication is doing what it should. Dipak Bhattarai and Aakar sent me the link to The Hindu article. It was a very detailed and in-depth analysis of the background of the current problem. I have summarized the articles below:

Excerpts from Nepali Times article.

Roads that cost Rs. 10 mil a day!

The photo on the right is a new road. You can see the damage and the blockage on the newly constructed road.

It has been about 40 days a road connecting Bhairahawa with Parasi was constructed for Rs. 400 mil. and it has started failing. The 29 km road was constructed under the load of Asian Development Bank (ADB). ADB does its own quality control for which a representative was there. But, the local leaders didn’t show him the damaged part and only showed the good part of the road.

The contractors have passed the road and have received the payme
nt. Now, they are saying it is not their problem.

Well, that was out of Kathmandu. But, there is a road in the heart of Kathmandu that got damaged within a month. And nobody in the authority is concerned.

Kguff.com says that ‘it can only happen in Nepal’. Everybody should be asking:

    • Are the approving officers incompetent ?
    • Do constructors / engineers have ethics in Nepal ?
    • Will the culprit be punished?
