Real worms, …again

The Real Juice, Real Embassy, Dabur Nepal, and Kantipur were center of attraction for for me, for some time. Now, it is Nayapatrika that came out with another version of the same story – extra materials in the juice. The same unanswered questions are being asked:

Why are our kids being fed such non-consumable items ? Why is the government silent on this issue ? (Even, India felt the heat and was talking)

Gaijatra – Nepali version of April Fool’s Day

Traditionally, Nepali people don’t celebrate April Fool’s day. These days, due to the western influence people in cities make fool of each other on that day. But, we have our own fun filled day to make fun of. The festival equivalent to the April Fool day is called Gaijatra in Nepal.

Gaijatra, the festival of cows, is celebrated to commemorates the death of people during the year. During the festival, people dressed as clowns and colorful cows are marched in the streets. When cows are not readily not available, people wearing cow masks march on the street. In olden days people had to walk bare-foot but these days such practice is discouraged.

The festival is full of songs, jokes, mockery, and humor.  So, Gai Jatra can be considered one of the healthiest festival in which, people accept the reality of death and prepare themselves for "the life after death". Gaijatra usually falls on the month of Bhadra (August – September). It also marks the be
ginning of festive season.

Nepal Pavilion in Shanghai Expo and National Pavilion Day cultural program

UPDATE: Videos added – courtesy China Daily

National Pavilion Day of the Nepal Pavilion in Shanghai Expo was on September 3, 2010. The event was marked with music, dance and exhibitions of art and culture. Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala went to China with 10 member cultural team lead by Shri Krishna Shrestha, for the program.

The Nepal Pavilion has a large Buddhist pagoda at the center, surrounded by folk houses representing styles from different periods in history dating back to the 11th century. The Pavilion showcases the outstanding talents in art and architecture in Nepal. The theme of the pavilion is “Tales of Kathmandu City — Seeking the Soul of a City: Exploration and Speculation.”

The pavilion is the biggest pavilion Nepal has created till date. Shanghai Expo 2010 officials have told that the Nepal Pavilion is popular in the Expo.

Shanghai Expo 2010 is the world’s largest expo featuring 189 international pavilions and 50 pavilions from multinational agencies.

Highlights of the cultural program:

Journalism Ethics, Dabur and Miss Nepal

Did you notice Kantipur, the biggest newshouse in Nepal, didn’t publish news about the biggest beauty contest in Nepal, Miss Nepal 2010 ? Nepal Television broadcasted the full event but Kantipur acted as if it hasn’t heard of the grand event. I didn’t see the news about it in Nayapatrika too (I don’t know if I missed it). Kantipur has published a news about a little known ‘Little Miss Nepal’ event, instead.

The reason: Dabur, the sponsor of Miss Nepal, has stopped publishing ads in Kantipur.

Fair enough! But, I have a few questions:

  • Shall I be kept in dark about Miss Nepal (or other news) because Dabur (or anybody else) didn’t advertise in Kantipur?
  • Should a reader care if Kantipur gets advertisement from Dabur or not?
  • If Kantipur writes only of those who provide them with advertisement, why do they charge the subscriber?
  • Are all the news in Kantipur sponsored ?
  • What is a guarantee that any of the news Kantipur publishes is independent ?

The 33-year-old, former crown princess Himani looked beautiful in a red sari at a program organized by the Tourism Development Board in Lazimpat, Kathmandu to celebrate Teej and choose ‘Teej Pari’ of this year.

The participants of the beauty contest ‘Teej Pari’ are married women and this is among a few beauty contest organized for married women.

The three-member jury to choose this year’s Teej Pari or ‘Mrs. Nepal’ included the first Miss Nepal, Ruby Rana.  The former crown princess placed the crown on the head of Kusum Bajracharya, the Teej Pari 2010.

Himani is originally from India’s Rajasthan. In recent time she is seen doing things normal citizen are doing like – paragliding in Pokhara, shopping in Kathmandu’s malls, and taking her children to the cinema.

Following gallery features photographs of Himani in the Teej event (photo credits – Deepesh Karki/onlinekhabar).

Is it Gmail's turn to be banned ? – Free calls to the US and Canada

With Google offering free calls to any phone numbers in the US and Canada, Nepal government might block Gmail in Nepal as it "bypasses the local telephone network" to make such free calls.

Nepal Government wanted to start banning websites but it is getting tougher than they previously thought. At first, they wanted to ban sex sites. They even issued directives to ISPs and as far as I know, the directive isn’t being implemented till date.

Indian Embassy – Real Juice – Real motive, and Indian Media

‘Real’ Embassy

Indian Embassy accused Nepali media of improperly posting news about the evidence of finding non-consumable materials in Real branded products. The photographs of tainted products published in various newspapers do seem genuine.

Even if Nepali press have exaggerated (which doesn’t seem true) some unanswered question are:

  1. Why does Indian Embassy have to issue a press release in this issue? Is it such a big issue? Does such minor events affect the intergovernmental relations between two countries?
  2. Is Dabur Nepal (or Dabur India) so incapable of defending itself?

Indian Embassy and Nepali Press

There were reports about the tainted products from all over Nepal. Given our media house’s capabilities and dedication, I don’t believe Nepali media can create such a large scaled fabricated story (as Indian Embassy told). And, it was not a single media house that reported the story. Apart from Nayapatrika, Weeklynepal, ABC news, Kantipur, radiomirmire, Pokharatoday, Pokharanews, Yubabahas; a lot of media had published independent news on the issue.

  1. Can Indian Embassy point out which of these media houses they were talking about?

Real worms in Real Juice

The news, photographs, and quotes of general public don’t look fabricated. They are from different sources, involve different people and are from different parts of the country. For example, some of the places from where reports of inconsumable products were reported (collected from different sources):

  1. Kapilvasthu (Badrinath Guesthouse, Chandrauta) – A government official witnessed 20 tainted packets.
  2. Pokhara (Bulaud Bazaar store) – The officials of Dabur Nepal forced the owner to close the shop.
  3. Kathmandu (Mohan Cold Store, Anamnagar) – Sagarmatha TV featured the story.
  4. More reports from different parts of Pokhara
  5. Birgunj – people admitted to hospital after drinking Real juice

Misleading Indian Media Campaign

Various media bodies in Nepal have expressed serious concern over Friday’s statement of Indian embassy.

However, Indian media are doing their own media campaign against Nepali media. (When Embassy itself is that irresponsible, I can’t blame the Indian media!)

Some of the headlines in Indian media:

  1. Dabur faces smear campaign in Nepal
  2. Dabur faces misleading media campaign in Nepal
  3. Indian joint ventures face smear campaign in Nepal

In contrast, Nepali media headlines read:

  1. Media bodies irked by Indian embassy statement; ask it to apologize
  2. Media orgs caution Indian embassy to respect diplomatic norms
