Gai Jatra Celebrated
Aug 4, 2012 @ 12:21
Gaijatra, the festival of cows was observed across the country on Friday. It is the festival celebrated by Newar community in which families, who have lost their members and relatives during the year paraded the streets, especially in the Capital, disguised as cows or with actual decorated cows, in memory of the deceased.
‘Gai’ or ‘cow’ helps departed souls cross a cosmic river called Baitarini in their journey after death, according to the religious scriptures. And according to another popular belief, King Pratap Malla initiated the festival in the 17th century to console his wife, who was in deep sorrow due to the untimely demise of her son Chakrapatendra Malla. Everyone in the country tried to make her laugh by coming out with cows and mimicry and also showed that she was not alone who have lost someone. Continue reading
After her marriage didn’t work (at least, unofficially), Manisha Koirala was trying to make a comeback in Bollywood. Producer and director Ram Gopal Varma is making her wish come true with the remake of a horror movie. Fans of Manisha had been curious on the role of Manisha in her upcoming horror movie. Ram Gopal explained that, Manisha will be featured in the movie as a mother of two kids.
We haven’t heard much good news about Manisha Koirala these days. Her re-entry in Nepali movie wasn’t that effective and the marriage didn’t work either. She had been seeking inner peace by visiting various yoga camps and she still doesn’t seem to have gathered herself up, yet.
Manisha was caught in a very unpleasant drunken state at a newly opened restaurant. It was the opening ceremony of the new restaurant, Versova, owned and operated by her ex-boyfriend Prashant Chaudhari.
Dressed in black-grey dress, Manisha, wasn’t able to control herself and was escorted to her residence by her friends.
It seems, the marriage of Manisha Koirala with Samrat Dahal is not going to last long. Last time, Manisha posted about her intention of divorce in May. She has done it again – by posting a bit more sad and harsh message in Facebook. The message reads:
My husband has become my enemy. How much worst can it become for a women?
Last time, the difference between the couple was was patched when friends and families helped them to soothe the relationship wounds. Manisha clarified that it was a minor issue with her husband.
A film by Onir, I AM, was screened in the Rastriya Nach Ghar on Sunday, June 5, 2011. The movie financed by the users of social networking sites, has some 400 financers from 46 countries.
The film stars Nandita Das, Purab Kholi, Manisha Koirala, Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Suri and Rahul Bose in different stories including – I Am Afia, I Am Megha, I am Abhimanyu, and I Am Omar.
The talk that Manisha Koirala‘s marriage getting into trouble and being in the verge of falling apart is a bit off the reality. It seems the couple haven’t given the hope yet. In the past, there was trouble in marriage and now Manisha has decided to give it another chance.
(Condolence to Mira Acharya, wife of comedian Hari Bansha Acharya – she died today, initial days of 2068)

It is a different story of the marriage between Nikhil Upreti and Sanchita Luitel while Nikhil hasn’t divorced with his other wife, Kopila Upreti.
After the analysis of the movies released in 2010 (in Part 1 and Part 2), let’s look back to 2010 and analyze the works of actors and directors to see who were successful and who were unsuccessful in the Nepali film industry.
Nepali Actresses
With two hits movies and an appreciable performance on Bato Muni Ko Phul, Rekha Thapa is the front runner in the list of successful persons in Nepali movie industry in the year 2010. Rekha’s role in Hifajat, Kasle Choryo Mero Mann and Bato Muni Ko Phul were appreciated by the viewers. Her glamorous role in other movies couldn’t leave a long lasting impression in the viewers.
After two years in release queue, Didi Bhai of Sunil Manadhar was finally released this year. A family drama and action movie was liked by a lot of viewers. Fans of Rajesh Hamal, his dialogue delivery, and action have appreciated this movie.
The musical blockbuster movie Nai Nabhannu La, directed by Bikash Acharya, also did a good business inside and outside of Kathmandu valley.
After a long absence from Nepali movie arena, director Naresh Paudyal released Deepsikha. This movie was more focused on the fact that actress Arunima Lamsal was the scriptwriter in the promotion that making it a better movie. The only thing that was successful about ‘Deepsikha’ was the promotional song of this movie. The movie failed big time.
The most awaited movie, Dharma, featuring Manisha Koirala was released recently (on December 10, 2010) all over Nepal. There were two reasons for the craze among movie goers:
First and the most important reason was the comeback of Manisha Koirala in Nepali film after two decades of absence. Movie lovers had a great expectation from Manisha Koirala based on her immense popularity in Hindi movies and Bollywood experience. The second reason was its director Dipendra K Khanal who had presented Rajesh Hamal in a new look in his movie The Yug Dekhi Yug Samma. Dipendra tried to present something new in his first movie The Yug Dekhi Yug Samma, which the viewers didn’t like as expected. Dipendra says that the movie was made in different trend, and was not suitable on our industry. So, he has tried to come up with a purely commercial themes in his movie Dharma. Dipendra has studied film direction in China. This is also one of the reasons to have high hopes on his movies. In short, Dharma has got educated and experienced team. Dharma starcast Rajesh Hamal and Nikhil Upreti apart from Manisha is also another huge strength.
But, medias and newspapers reviews of Dharma is not as good as expected. They say the movie has nothing new and has the same masala that are used in old Hindi and Nepali movies. The only new thing is the actress, team, location, and presentation of those old subject matters.
When I watched the movie, I found the music was also good apart from the team. But the story had nothing new in it and it was was presented in purely filmy way. In some places, those filmy styles were added by force and it was very obvious. The dialogue delivery of Manisha Koirala was also not that good. Manisha had spoken Nepali language in the tone sounding more like Hindi and English. Manisha had expressed her dissatisfaction with the director and his style of direction during the shooting of the movie.
