Journalism Ethics, Maya Bazin, Smita Thapa, and Kantipur

UPDATE: One of the admins of the site hosting Maya’s video has replied to our question about the background of Maya Bazin. Here is what they have to say:

She’s a |**rn girl. That’s why she’s lying. Most girls don’t want to give away their real background so she made something up. ….

I hope the editors in Saptahik have learned the lesson.

Last time, when the infamous sex tape of Namrata Shrestha was covered in various media, BBC Nepali initiated a discussion on the Journalist ethics and responsibility. At that time many media houses, including Kantipur publication, choose to ignore the issue and acted as if the scandal didn’t happen.

The time has changed. It seems, Kantipur is regretting the noble decision it made at that time.

When Kantipur published an interview of an intoxicated and sexually aggressive model/actress, Smita Thapa, we questioned its real purpose. A latest front-page article about a sex film actress, Maya Bazin, has made the interview of Smita Thapa insignificant to talk about.

As far as I know, it is illegal to make or sell sex films in Nepal. Such act is punishable by law. Does that make it illegal to create undue interest on such films in general public? I hope, the law pundits will answer the question in comment.

Top 10 Newsmakers of 2066 BS

The Nepali year 2066 BS is going to finish on April 14, 2010. The year had a few ups and a lot of downs. I am compiling the top newsmakers of the year 2066. Writing the full list will take some time. I will update this page later and hopefully will finish before the year 2066 finishes.

1. Gyanendra Shah (Ex-King, wounded lion?)

Gyanendra (King of Nepal from 2001 to 2008) made news again at the end of the year by telling that the royalty is not dead yet. The political environment was heated and it started political debate on his statement.

2. Paramananda Jha (Hindi attachment)

Paramananda Jha came into controversy after he took the oath of office and secrecy in Hindi language. Paramananda Jha’s position as the Vice President has become defunct from 31 August 2009, with his refusal to take oath in Nepali. According to the Supreme Court’s verdict, Jha wasn’t allowed to perform any duties in capacity of the VP and wasn’t entitled to special security and privileges given to him as the VP. Jha was then in a situation where he has been elected as the VP by the parliament, but hasn’t taken oath.

After six months off duty, Vice President’s post was reactivated from February 7, 2010, after he took fresh oath of office and secrecy. This time, he took the oath both in Nepali and his mother tongue Maithali. Taking oath in mother tongue other than Nepali is permitted after a recent amendment in current Constitution letting President, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ministers to take oath of office and secrecy in their respective mother tongues.

Namrata Shrestha’s latest interview

Namrata Shrestha, one of the top model/actress, told that she is currently preparing herself to act on a movie based on a drug addict. She was talking to a journalist of nepalisite.com in her latest interview (video attached below).

The interview probably is the first such public appearance of Namrata after the release of a sex scandal video in September 2009. The scandal however wasn’t mentioned in the interview.

Namrata has proven her acting talent in the movies Sano Sansar and Mero Euta Saathi Chha. Many of the film industry personnel and the film viewers do not want to loose such a talented actress because of a stupid video that was released accidently. The interview seems to be the first step towards the re-establishment of Namrata’s acting career. Previously, she was also rumored to host the KTV film award show, but she didn’t showed up in the event.

Namrata Shrestha celebrating New Year with her boyfriend

Isn’t it an odd title? You would certainly celebrate New Year with your loved ones. Young kids celebrate it with their parents, a bit grown-ups celebrate with their boy/girlfriends, and others with their family.

Yes, it is me and my ancient Nepalese mentality. I can’t help wondering how strong the love is between these love-birds. I wish this guy were the guy in the scandal video.

Namrata Shrestha to host KTV awards?

Now it is sure, Namrata won’t dwell on the past mistake and will come back with the bang. Some time back she decided to work in a film involving Ekata, a previous drug addict and drug abuse activist, and this time it is more challenging task she is planning to undertake – host KTV awards.

The award show hosted by Kantipur TV is one of the show to gauge the performance of movies, actors and backstage personnel. I hope, somebody will nominate Namrata on the Most Scandalous Actress of 2009 followed by Pooja Lama.

Most of the cine artists want Namrata to come back in the entertainment industry. So they are pressuring her to present herself to the public. The acting of Namrata in her past movies Mero Euta Sathi Chha and Sano Sansar were liked by many and they don’t want to lose the rising star of Nepali Cinema.

Good news – Namrata is coming back in film

It is certainly a good news for the well wishers of Namrata Shrestha. Namrata will forget all the bad publicity and start acting in an upcoming movie soon.

After the release of a scandalous video in September there had been various speculation about her film career. Many had forecasted the end of her film career. To prove them wrong she is coming back in a strong role of a drug addict based on the life of Ekata Mahat.

Ekata started taking drug at the age of 14. After two years of rehabilitation efforts she could finally fight the urge for the drug. Learning from her own life, she started organizing drug abusers and help them fight it. (more on her in Nepali at himalkhabar)

Scandal, Journalism Ethics, BBC and Nayapatrika

The Namrata Shrestha sex scandal has created a huge impact not only in Nepalese film industry but also started debate on ethics in journalism. BBC Nepali aired a program “Nepal Samdarva” (sorry, the audio link is removed from BBC)  in which Rabindra Mishra questioned on the ethics of Nepali journalist to bring out the news to general public. Mishra called upon the editor of Nayapatrika Dainik, Krishna Jwala Devkota, and Journalism Professor, P. Kharel, to talk on the issue. Kharel says that the video is personal and it should haven’t have been a news but Krishna defended on being it a public news.

Till date, it is not known who released the tape in YouTube. Internet, by its vary nature is ruthless in distributing content around the world. In a matter of hours the video was distributed all around the world like a wild fire. Some noted newspapers like Kantipur, Nagariknews didn’t thought it newsworthy (however they featured articles on the subject, later). But others like Dainikee, Nayapatrika wrote front page articles on their issues. This shows division on mainstream journalist on prioritizing news for publication. Some thought it a personal matter and others consider it a public concern. We first thought that it was an attempt to defame the artist but it later turned out to be the real Namarta. It shouldn’t have been released in internet in the first place… once it is out one can’t control it. Turning a blind eye on it might even backfire. People should be given an opportunity to learn from others’ mistakes.

Namrata Shrestha video incident: Lesson to be learnt

It was a sad incident that an intimate video of Namrata Shrestha and Kichaa Man Chitrakaar (DJ Tantrik) was released to the general public. They were aspiring artists in Nepali film and music industries. That might be the reason they got overwhelming response from Nepali people at home and those living all around the world. After a similar incident involving singer Prakash Ojha this was the second biggest sex scandal in Nepal. I don’t know weather Namrata and Tantrik forgot about Prakash Ojha incident or choose to ignore it.

Apart from these events there are many such videos being released from time to time in discussion forums. Those people, being unknown to general public, do not attract that much attention. But the person involved do not get less pain and frustration than the well known persons like Namrata or Ojha. It is not only the person who is seen in the video; there are whole lot of persons, like spouses, children, friends, and relatives, who are affected by such incidents. Our society is not that advanced to digest such acts released to public. So, care should be exercised while taking such photos or videos. Damage once done can not be reversed.

Some suggestions, that I can think of now are:

Namrata Shrestha Sex Scandal

Namrata started acting in Grade 1. Watch Namrata’s first film Watch “Sangani” here.

Namrata Shrestha is in the top of the news these days with the release of her latest movie ‘Mero Euta Saathi Chha’.  I haven’t seen the movie yet but I have heard that it is a cocktail of Hollywood, Bollywood and Korean movies. She had shown her acting potential in her last movie  ‘Sano Sansar‘.

Also watch: A video about Namrata:

This post is not about her acting or movies but about a 8 minutes video circulating in the internet recently. I am not much sure, but the dimple of the girl on the video resembles that of Namrata. The girl in the video seems to be well skilled in what she was doing. Although the couple are talking in English it sounds pretty much like Nepali ascent. The girl, although looking a bit drunk, is well aware of the video recording as the flash lights are turned on. At some point, she tells “turn it off please…. its disturbing”.

Please see the screenshot from video and compare with the original photo of Namrata. Do you think it is Namrata? If the latest scandal proves to be true she is supposed to be on headline for quite some time.

I hope the video is not a fabricated one to defame the aspiring artist.
