INAS Award 2016 highlights

Nepali movie industry became richer by two more film awards in this weekend. One was held in India and another in the USA. Like all other awards, the award ceremonies were equally controversial. It’s not only the artists uninterested in the film awards, now the media hasn’t given the importance to the award ceremonies.The INAS Film Award 2016 was held in Gantok, Sikkim on Wednesday November 9, 2016. The chief guests in the award ceremony were the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Manisha Koirala, Rajesh Hamal, and Karishma Manandahr.

Friday Release – Jatra and Jung Bahadur Ko Coat

Two new movies have released in theater on November 11, 2016 – ‘Jatra’ and ‘Jung Bahadur Ko Coat’. Director Pradeep Bhattarai’s movie ‘Jatra’ is a comedy movie different from it’s competing action movie ‘Jung Bahadur ko Coat’.

The movie ‘Jatra’ is produced by the ‘Talakjung VS Tulke’ producer, Rabindra Singh Baniya. Baniya was featured as ‘the Hanuman’ character in ‘Pashupati Prasad’. The movie is the debut movie of the director Pradeep Bhattarai. Battarai had worked in the movies and television serials directed by Madan Krishan Shrestha and Hari Bamsha Acharaya (MaHa Jodi) as an assistant director. Two main characters feature Bipin Karki and Rabindra Singh Baniya (Bhasme of ‘Pashupati Prasad’ and Hanuman respectively).

Chhakka Panja new record – UAE release in 6 cities

The record breaking Nepali movie ‘Chhakka Panja’ is setting another new record. The movie is being screened in 7 different theatres in 6 cities in the United Arab Emeritus (UAE) starting November 10. The movie is being screened in the UAE cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Ajman, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah.

The movie is being screened in association with the local distributor of the movie. A Nepali company Concept Vision Film Production and Distributors had started the distribution of Nepali movies in UAE in October 14, 2016. The first Nepali movie released in UAE was ‘Bir Bikram’.

The Nepali movies in UAE are targeted to the foreign worker Nepali people living in the UAE. In addition to UAE, Nepali movies are expected to be released in other Arab countries including Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. Process of releasing Nepali movies in Thailand has also started.

Comedy actress Deepa Shree Niraula’s directoral debut movie ‘Chhakka Panja’ has already celebrated 51 days and is still running in many theatres in Nepal. The movie features Deepak Raj Giri, Priyanka Karki, Shivahari Poudel, Kedar Ghimire, Jitu Nepal, Buddhi Tamang, Barsha Raut, Namrata Sapkota among others.

Arohi Sharma to debut in Hairan after Aanchal Sharma didn’t show up

World record holder youngest director, Saugat Bista, is directing his second movie after the success of his first movie ‘Love You Baba’. The shooting of the second movie titled ‘Hairan’ has started in a garage in Sankhamul.

‘Hairan’ is a comedy movie made on a family drama. The movie features Saugat’s father Gajit Bista, Saroj Khanal, Nishma Ghimire, Satyaraj Acharya, Buddhi Tamang, Puskar Regmi, Sagar Lamsal, Arohi Sharma and others. Arohi Sharma is a new actress debuting in the movie and will be featured in the leading role.

One more film award, are you interested, excited?

INAS Award nominations were announced on November 5, 2016. Right after the announcement, the organization’s Nepal Chapter members were not happy. That is not all, I think, nobody is interested or excited about  yet another award. Although many accuse omission of some of the best movies, the the nominations are expected. The winners will most probably be the same one that had already won different awards for the same movie, same artists and category. I am sure, many winners won’t go to receive the award.

INAS Award controversy started right after the nomination

Some of the members of INAS (International Nepalese Artists Society) have expressed their dissatisfaction over the nomination on the award. When two successful movies ‘Woda Number 6’ and ‘Prem Geet’ were not nominated in any categories, some of the members accused that the jury had made decision without even watching the movie.

3rd Movie of Samragyee RL Shah to be made on a NRN tourist story, Timi Sanga

The third movie of ‘Dreams’ debut actress Samragyee RL Shah was announced on Bhai Tika. The movie featuring Samragyee RL Shah and Aakash Shrestha in leading role is being made on the story of a NRN tourist who is in affair with the tourist guide. Aakash Shrestha debuted as an actor in Sushmita KC’s production ‘Ma Ta Timrai Hoon’.

INAS Award Top 3 Nomination, to be held in Sikkim

The nominations of the fourth edition of INAS Film Award, to be held in Gangtok, Sikkim on Kartik 24, were released on November 4, 2016. There are three nominations on each of 19 different categories. The award is being organized by the International Nepali Artist Association (INAS). In the award movies released in 2015 and released till April 15 of 2016 were included. ‘Classic’ has led the list with nominations in 9 categories, ‘Kabaddi Kabaddi’ follows with 6 categories and ‘Pashupati Prasad’ in 5 categories. These three movies are also the top three movies in the nomination.

Friday Release – The Winner

UPDATE – ‘The Famous’ release is postponed to next week. So, ‘The Winner’ is the solo release this week (the post will be updated later). **

Two new movies, both with English names – ‘The Winner’ and ‘The Famous’ are releasing in theater this Friday on November 4, 2016. The movie ‘The Famous’ is directed by Samir Balami and ‘The Winner’ is directed by Hikmat Bista.

The Winner

‘The Winner’ featuring actress Malina Joshi with Maheshman Shrestha, Manchin Shakya, Reshu Tamang and Amit Giri is shot in various locations in Kathmandu, Australia, and Dubai. The movie is told to be the most expensive Nepali movie to date. The film makers have told that they have tried their best to give it a Bollywood / Hollywood flavour.

Friday Release – Radha and Pardeshiko Umang

On this Friday, October 28, 2016 two new movies were released in theatre – Yogesh Ghimire’s ’Radha’ and Shiva Sharma’s ‘Paradeshiko Umanga’ and Hikmat Bista’s ‘The Winner’. The movies are expecting a high turnout in theatre on the holiday season of Tihar.

Radha

The movie featuring Jiwan Luitel and Sanchita Luitel in leading role is a love story movie. The characters meet during a bus travel and then come close. The movie is about a problem in their relationship. The movie features the music of Basanta Sapkota, direction of Yogesh Ghimire, action of Himal KC, choreography of Kabiraj Gahatraj, editing of Arjun GC and Milan Shreatha, cinematography of Man Krishna Shrestha and script of Pradeep Bhardwoj.

3 Juliets of Hassan Raza Khan ‘Romeo’

Hassan Raza Khan has formally announced his upcoming movie ‘Romeo’ in a program held in Kathmandu. Although it was informally announced during his birthday in February, it took a while to finalize the artists and the start of the movie. The name of the movie ‘Romeo’ and one of the actresses, Oshima Banu were announced in February of 2016. In addition to Oshima Banu two more actresses were announced in the formal announcement.

In addition to Oshima two other actresses in the movie are Nisha Adhikari and Melina Manandhar. The roles of the actors in the movie are kept secret, but they are likely to be featured as the Juliets of the lead character who is probably named Romeo – after the name of the movie. So, if the lad actor Hassan Khan is featured as Romeo, three probable Juliets are :

  • Oshima Banu
  • Melina Manandhar
  • Nisha Adhikari

NEFTA Award 2016 nominations (watch nominated movies)

The top 5 nominations for the 9th edition of NEFTA Awards has been released. In NEFTA Award 2016 the movies ‘Classic’ and ‘Prem Geet’ have received the most number of nominations in the 31 categories announced by the origanizer. Classic has been nominated in 18 categories and ‘Prem Geet’ is nominated in 17 different categories. In third place, ‘Pashupati Prasad’ has been nominated in 9 categories. I have also listed the movies nominated, and available to watch in full.

The award ceremony will be held on December 23, 2016 in Dubai of UAE. The nominations are prepared by a 5-member selection committee led by Bharat Shakya among the movies released in the year 2072.

Loot 2 item song, is it better than Udreko Choli?

The sequel of superhit movie ‘Loot’, ‘Loot 2’ is in making. An item song of the movie titled ‘Laijau Thamel Bazar …’ was released on October 22 featuring a new item girl, Alisha Rai, as Sundari. The song composed by Kali Prasad Baskota features the voices of Kali Prasad Baskota, Mina Niraula and Bhanubhakta Dhakal, and is written jointly by Ektaare and Kali Prasad Baskota.

The sequel features most of the cast and the crews of the original movie. In the original movie, ‘Loot’ the item song titled ‘Udhreko Choli ..’ had become very popular. The song had established actress Sushma Karki as an item girl. It is to be seen if Alisha Rai will follow the success of Sushma Karki. ‘Loot’ is credited for rescuing the Nepali movie industry when it was in its worst time in the history.

Friday Release – Makhamali and 21 Barsha

Two new movies have released in theatre on October 21, 2016 – ‘Makhamali’ and ’21 Barsha’. The movie ‘Makhamali’ is made on the story of the struggle of Chari Maya Tamang. In the another new release, ’21 Barsha’ the cast and crew is mostly comprises of the youths of 21-years-olds. They are released at the time when ‘Chhaka Panja’ is keeping its holdover for over 7 weeks in many theatres.

The movie ‘Makhamali’ is made on the story of a woman sold in the brothel in Mumbai, Chari Maya Tamang. Chari Maya had struggled in the brothel and had returned back to Nepal to send the human trafficker to jail.  Continue reading

Nikhil Upreti in negative role in his home production movie, Rudra

A new movie is announced titled ‘Rudhra’. In the movie, to be made under his home production banner The Nikhil Upreti Production was announced in a ceremony held in Kathmandu on October 18, 2016. In the movie, a new face, Bishow Sharma will be featured in the leading role. The lead actress is also a new actress, Sara, a UK resident Charted Accountant student.

‘Rudra’ will be directed by Ramji Lamichhane. The film crew had left for Mustang for the shooting after the announcement. The movie will be shot in various locations in Jomsom of Mustang, Karnali, Kohalpur and Narayangadh area.  Continue reading

Friday Release – Kismat 2 and Subba Saab

At the time of Dashain holiday, two new movies ‘Kismat 2’ and ‘Subba Saab’ are released in theatres on October 7, 2016. The movie ‘Kismat 2’ is a Chhabiraj Production movie – a sequel of a hit movie ‘Kismat’, but made in a new story. Another movie ‘Subba Saab’ is director Raju Adhikari’s presentation. These movies are released at the time ‘Chhaka Panja’ is keeping its holdover for a month.

The movie got a lot of media coverage because of the rumour of the marriage between Chhabi Raj Ojha and the actress Shilpa Pokharel. Similar rumour during the release of ‘Lazza’ had resulted in the success of the movie. It is to be seen if repeating similar rumour at the time of the release of another movie will be equally helpful. Directed by Rishi Lamichhane ‘Kismat 2’ features Shilpa Pokharel with Prithivi Raj and Kishor Khatiwoda.
