ID requirement in Cyber Cafe – will it work?

cyber-cafe Nepal government has instructed Cyber Cafes in Nepal to check personal identification of every customer before they are allowed to surf the internet. This new requirement is the latest in a series of ‘desperate’ steps taken by the government to control ‘cyber crime’.

It is not a bad idea to keep a log of everybody who uses internet in a public place. That would certainly help investigators to track criminals. A law-abiding citizen wouldn’t mind a little hassle of showing his IDs in Cyber Cafe.

But, the big questions are – will it be implemented properly ? Is there a proper monitoring body, effective enough to monitor the requirement ?

And, past experience shows immatureness in decision taking. They have taken decision in hurry and later realize the decision can’t be implemented at all.

When a 7 year-old kid operates an excavator

What do you do when your 7 year-old-kid wants to drive your car?

What if it is an excavator ?

If I were you, I wouldn’t let him drive/operate it. There is a valid reason, an underage person is not allowed to drive. They can do anything with a vehicle but drive. Kids play video games much better than an adult. I know, my 5 year-old can drive a car if I let him. It is nothing more than playing a video game… a real game.

In Nasika 7, Kavrepalanchowk, Dhawa Fanji Lama operated an excavator. That was not surprising. What surprised me more was that, everybody from high level government officials to school teachers and journalists were praising the kid.

Sole PM candidate didn't win – Weird Nepal!

Even after one of the two contestants for the post of Prime Minister, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has finally pulled himself out from the prime ministerial race another candidate, Ram Chandra Paudel of Nepali Congress (NC), refused to give up.

What is more strange is that the sole candidate, Poudel, failed to secure majority yet again in the eighth round of voting on Sunday.

Only 189 lawmakers out of 598 active members in the 601-seat parliament, casted their votes in the election. Poudel
, the sole candidate, secured a mere 116 votes and was declared defeated.

Do Nepali Models fit in Model criteria ?

The British Association of Model Agents (AMA) says that female models should be around 34-24-34 in (86-61-86 cm) and at least 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m) tall.

How many of the Nepali models are taller than 5 ft 8 in ? I suspect none.

Wikipedia defines a model as ‘a person who is employed for the purpose of displaying and promoting fashion clothing or other products and for advertising or promotional purposes or who poses for works of art.’

  • How many of them are posing for ‘works of art’? Probably, none.
  • How many of the internet models are ‘promoting fashion clothing’ or other product ? A very small number of them, I believe.

Some of you might say that the definition of model, in this digital age, is changed. I agree, and I also believe so. But, there is still something amiss, odd, or awkward on the way our modeling industry is shaping up. I have lost track of the beauty contests, being held every other day — and I won’t be writing about them anymore unless they are ‘big enough’ like Miss Nepal. These ‘model manufacturing’ contests might be one of the reason there are so many models around.

When you can’t fit it in the traditional definition, you should redefine term itself so that, everybody fits in it. Then, what is the definition of Nepali version of Model ?

Indra Jatra celebrated in Kathmandu

September 22, 2010 was Indra Jatra in Nepal. The only living goddess in the world, Kumari, was carried in chariot while the Prime Minister, President, and high level official witness the procession.

Indra Jatra is the festival to remember Lord Indra, the king of heaven, and the god of rain. In Newari, this festival is also called Yanya Punhi. It is believed that the festival was started by Lichhavi king Gunkamadev in Kaligat Sambat 3822. Indra Jatra also marks the beginning of Dashain and Tihar festivals.

The festival begins with the carnival-like erection of a ceremonial pole, known as Yosin, accompanied by the rare display of the deity Aakash Bhairab. The Aakash Bhairab is represented by a massive mask spouting beer and liquor.

This is the only time of year the households throughout Kathmandu valley display images and sculptures of Indra and Bhairab. The Kumari, the only living goddess in the world, leaves the seclusion of her temple in a palanquin and leads a procession through the streets of Kathmandu to thank Indra, the rain god.

Every year, Indra Jatra begins from the Dwadasi of Bhadra to Aswin Krishna Chaturd asi, a total of eight days. Previously the festival was a week-long until King Jaya Prakash Malla in 1765 B.S. added a day to pull chariot through Naradevi, Nhyokha, Ason, Indrachwok and Hanuman Dhoka.

In one old saying, it is said that Indra’s mother needed a type of flower found in Nepal, parijat, for some religious ritual. Indra disguised himself as a human and came to the earth to fetch the flower. But, Indra was unlucky to be caught during stealing the flowers. The people tied Indra with ropes. A statue Maru Tole in Kathmandu depicts the tied Indra and is still being worshipped.

In Indra Chowk, Akash Bhairava bust, decorated with flowers, is displayed. The Akash Bhairava’s head is related to the epic, Mahabharata. Some even believe it to be the head of the first Kirat King Yalamber.

Some of the variety of performances during Indra Jatra are the dances of Sawa Bhakku Bhairav from Halchowk, Lakhes from Majipat, Devi Nach and Yeravat hathi (Pulukisi) from Naradevi, Mahakali and Kathi Maka Nach from Bhaktapur. These dances take place around the ancient Royal Palace, Hanuman Dhoka.

Indrajatra is the only time PuluKisi (Indra’s Elephant) dances in the public.

Other Lakhe dances are also very popular in Indra Jatra.

In the Lakhe and Sabha Bhakku dance, Lakhe chases Sabha Bhakku and Sabha Bhakku teases Lakhe. Lakhe dance of Majhipat is one of the most popular dances in the Jatra.

To promote Lakhe dance tradition, Narayangarh Bus Park Tol Sudhar and Bus Byawasthapan Samiti is organizing third National Lakhe Dance Competition on September 21 and 22, 2010. The first and second such competition were held in 2064 and 2065 BS. The winner, first runner-up and second runner-up will receive Rs. 30,000, Rs. 20,000, and Rs. 10,000 respectively. All the other participating teams will also be awarded Rs. 5,000 for their participation.
