Halloween craze in Nepali artists

The governments won’t let it happen but, the information technology is doing its best to make the world a borderless place. The Western cultural influence has been more evident in the Nepal these days. After the widespread popularity of Christmas, Halloween has also gained some grounds these days. The festival of ghost and scare, Halloween is fun festival for children and adults alike. With the general public some celebrities have also celebrated Halloween this year. I have collected some photos of our Nepali film artists for xNepali readers.

Halloween is a festival of remembering the dead people in the family. It is celebrated by the people of Christian faith. But, because of the fun aspects of the festival, people of other religion also celebrate it in Western countries. Costumes, candies and Trick-or-Treating is more like the combination of our Deusi – Bhailo in Tihar and Gaijatra festival.

Short Films Competition 2015 (Watch 10 finalist short films)

The 10 short films selected for the final competition for Mang Heem Short Films Cometition 2015 has been released. Earlier, Mang Heem Films had called for the entries of short films on drug abuse theme. The competition is also a part of the promotion of the company’s upcoming release, ‘Rato Ghar’. There were 26 entries in the competition, a jury at the company has selected the top 10 for the final competition.

The competitor films range from 5 minutes to 10-minutes in length and are made on the theme of drug abuse. The director and producer of ‘Rato Ghar’, Suraj Subba Nalbo says that he is impressed by the number of entries and the quality of the films. According to the coordinator of the competition, Shanti Priya, the movies will be available in YouTube from November 1, 2015 to Feburay 1, 2016 for the evaluation. By the selection based on the decision of the jury and the response of the viewers one best film will win Rs. 100,000 in cash prize.

Namrata Shrestha seen with boyfriend in Adhakatti premier show ?

Actress Namrata Shrestha was seen with a guy named Dawa Sherpa in the premier show of ‘Adhakatti’. The premier show held on Monday at Kumari theater in Kathamndu on October 19 featured traditional panche baja and a score of artists and well known personality.

‘Adhakatti’ features Namrata Shrestha in cameo role and she has done an item dance on the song made on her own name. Although Namrata didn’t publicly told that Dawa Sherpa was her boyfriend, there were rumor that the guy is Namrata’s new boyfriend.

Initially Namrata was rumored to be seeing actor Raymon Das Shrestha. Their affair remained a mystery as neither of them confirmed it.

INAS Film Award 2015, winners (full list)

The third edition of INAS Film Award was held in Pragya Bhawan, Kamaladi in Kathmandu. The award ceremony held on Sunday awarded director Tulsi Ghimire with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The award has has a cash prize of Rs. 100,000. The award ceremony was organized by the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRN) and the Film Development Board (FDB). In the program, NRN Upendra Mahato appreciated in the improvement in the quality of Nepali movies. Actor and musician Muralidhar expressed his happiness to be honored in a Nepali film award ceremony.

We Will Rise charity event held in Hong Kong

A charity program titled ‘We will rise’ was held in Hong Kong recently. The program to help raise fund for earthquake relief was a successful and entertaining program in Hong Kong.

For the first time after returning back from the USA, actor Saroj Khanal went on a stage show in a foreign soil. He had performed with actress Karishma Manandhar in a musical titled ‘Priyasika Yaadharu’. Saroj and Sarita Giri performed in a play titled ‘Hamro Aawaz’. Actress Sushma Karki had danced in ‘himallai Dhakyo Kanchha…’

600 episodes of Tito Satya, Woda Number Chha released out of Kathmandu

Popular comedy serial ‘Tito Satya’ has celebrated its 600th episode on Thursday, October 1, 2015. It has been 12 years since the weekly comedy serial started its tele-cast in Nepal Television. In the past 12-years the theme of the serial was similar – making fun of the current events and portraying the life of a typical resident of Kathmandu. Because of Kathmandu focus of the serial, the serial wasn’t less popular in places out of the valley. Another similar serial ‘Meri Bassai’ was more of the life in villages and was popular among the people from villages. These two and another serial ‘Jire Khursani’ had been quite popular in Nepal Television for a long time. A new comedy serial ‘Bhadragol’ has also gained a lot of popularity these days.

The director and the writer of the serial, Deepak Raj Giri has realized the theme being the same for a dozen years and has promised to change it for the betterment in coming days. Starting this week, Deepak is planning to change the artists, story, style and the message. Deepak told that he will introduce new artists and Deepak will appear less in the future episodes.

Actress Reema Bishowkarma marries a UK NRN

Actress Reema Bishowkarma has married her lover of a year, Robert Lungun Bishowkarma in a ceremony held at Hotel Hyatt in Bouddha, Kathmandu. The event was held on September 27, 2015 among the friends and family of the bride and the groom. Reema and Robert had secretly engaged and the news of the marriage was unveiled a couple of days earlier to the actual event.

Reema’s movie ‘Bhale Fight’ was released on Friday and she was busy in the promotion of the movie days before the marriage. Reema had chosen the movie’s release date to introduce her husband to the media. Reema and Robert have promised that Reema will continue to work in entertainment sector even after the marriage.

The couple have invited their friends and family in the evening for a reception party.

NEFTA Awards – winners (full list, video)

BesLike previous years the Nepali film awards by the association of Nepali film technicians, NEFTA, was held in foreign soil. This year’s award ceremony was held in Qatar. In the ceremony held among 8,000 audience award on various categories were handed over to the winners. Winning 5 different awards, ‘Talakjung Vs. Tulke’ became the best movie this year.

What Nepali artists say about Nepal Constitution 2072 ?

In a special ceremony held in Kathmandu on September 20, 2015, the new constitution of Nepal was unveiled by the president Dr. Ram Baran Yadav at the Constitution Assembly (CA) in Kathmandu. The constitution was written after an 8-years-long writing process spanning two Constitution Assemblies. Although there are still some people who are not satisfied by the new constitution, ninety percent of CA members had endorsed it. The citizens of Terai region have complained that the Constitution hasn’t incorporated their demands. As the new Constitution can easily be amended by 2/3 majority in the parliament, all the concerns can easily be incorporated in future amendments. According to reports, the new Constitution is the most democratic Constitution in the history of Nepal. On the completion of the lengthy constitution writing process, the film artists have welcomed it and have congratulated everybody for the achievement. I have collected some of the responses of Nepali artists on the historic day.

Kabaddi wins NFDC Film Awards (full list of winners)

Aryan and Priyanka become the best actors

The 3rd edition of NFDC Film Award ceremony was held in Kathmandu on September 12 at Hotel Hayat in Boudha. TIn the ceremony ‘Kabaddi’ was awarded the best movie of the year 2071. Actor Aryan Sigdel was awarded the best actor for his role in ‘November Rain’ and actress Priyanka Karki was awarded the Best actress for her role in ‘Suntali’.

The best director award was handed over to the director of ‘Kabaddi’, Ram Babu Gurung. The full list of winners is as follows:

Kalo Pothi premiered in Venice Film Festival

Nepali movie ‘Kalo Pothi’ (The Black Hen) was premiered in a Venice Film Festival in Italy on September 5, 2015. To be premiered in the festival, considered to be one of the oldest film festivals in the world, is an honor to the Nepali film. This year’s Venice Film Festival is the 72nd edition of the festival.

The movie ‘Kalo Pothi’, a story of two kids during the hardship of Maoist civil war in Nepal, is 1 hour and 30 minutes long. The movie however doesn’t support any political views. The movie mostly shot in Mugu featues Khadka Raj Nepali, Benisha Hamal and Sukra Raj Rokaya. The director, Min Bahadur Bham, says that he has no immediate plans to release the movie in Nepal. The movie was produced in collaboration of the producers from Germany, Switzerland and France. The cinematographer Aziz Zhambakiyev had previously won an award on cinematography in Berlin Film Festival.

Film artists in Teej Songs of 2015

The greatest festival of women, Teej, is mostly a musical festival. The women wear attractive jewelries and clothes in red and dance to the songs composed specifically for the festival. Because of the commercial value of the songs, a lot of new songs are produced this year. It is surprising that the movie actresses have modeled in a lot of those movies. I have compiled a list of songs featuring various actresses.

Among the actresses featured in Teej songs, actress Neeta Dhungana is featured in a lot of them. Other actresses include Sushma Karki, Karishma Manandhar, Reema Bishowkarma, Melina Manandhar, Nandita KC, Benisha Hamal and others. Its not only the actresses, actor Rajesh Hamal is also featured in one of the latest Teej songs.

Laaz and Kalo Pothi to be featured in Busan Film Festival

Two Nepali movies are going to be featured in the 20th edition of Busan International Film Festival to be held at Busan, South Korea. The festival starting on October 1.

The movie to be featured in the festival are ‘Kalo Pothi’ (The Black Hen) by Min Bahadur Bham and a short film named ‘Laaz’ (The Shame) by Sushan Prajapati.

‘Kalo Pothi’ will be one of the 51 feature films to be screened from 32 different Asian countries in ‘A Window on Asian Cinema’ category. The 1 hour and 30 minutes long movie is made on the civil war in Nepal. The movie featuring Khadka Raj Nepali, Benisha Hamal and Sukra Raj Rokaya was shot in Mugu. Film Critics Awards 2015 goes to Kabaddi

The Films Critics Society of Nepal (FICSON) has announced the winners of the second Critics Award. The movies released in 2071 BS were considered in the selection of the winners. Winners were selected in eight different categories. Best Background Music award is an addition to the categories awarded last year.

The winner of Critics Awards 2015 are:

  • Best director – Nischal Basnet for ‘Talakjung Vs Tulke’

Keki and Nandita performed in Miss Nepal US 2015 beauty contest in New York

The fifth edition of Miss Nepal US was held in New York among a huge crowd of Nepali living in the USA. Two Nepali actresses, Keki Adhikari and Nandita KC had also performed in the event. Actress Manisha Koirala was also present in the event. Other bollywood actors and Nepali actors like Sunil Thapa were also present in the event. Most of these film artists were in the USA to participate in FOG festival in California, held earlier.

Priyanka Thapaliya, a resident of North Carolina, has wont this years Miss Nepal US title. Kaushila Lama and Neha Jha have won the first and second runner up titles respectively. The winners were selected from the pool of ten finalists of the contest.
