When a 7 year-old kid operates an excavator

What do you do when your 7 year-old-kid wants to drive your car?

What if it is an excavator ?

If I were you, I wouldn’t let him drive/operate it. There is a valid reason, an underage person is not allowed to drive. They can do anything with a vehicle but drive. Kids play video games much better than an adult. I know, my 5 year-old can drive a car if I let him. It is nothing more than playing a video game… a real game.

In Nasika 7, Kavrepalanchowk, Dhawa Fanji Lama operated an excavator. That was not surprising. What surprised me more was that, everybody from high level government officials to school teachers and journalists were praising the kid.

Waterproof laptops, waterproof watches, and marketing strategy

A demonstration of waterproof laptops in Hotel Radisson reminded me of the ‘amphibian watches’ sold on the streets of Bhotahity.

We have seen a lot of ‘waterproof’ wrist-watches being sold in the streets. These amphibian watches are actually being dipped in salt-water and normal water easily damage them. So, What You See (WYS) is not What You Get (WYG). The difference between the photo above and below: the chicks on the photo above are models on tights and the one below can’t afford to be slim and sexy enough!

Will Nepal Government Block Access to Temples?

In response to our post Explicit websites blocked in Nepal, an international research group has shown interest on monitoring the website blockage in Nepal.

It’s very important that we work to preserve the Internet as a medium of Free Expression and the first step is exposing and stopping governments from engaging in unlawful censorship.

The quote above is taken from an email from the research group. We will talk about it in details, with their permission, in future.

When talking about nudity and explicit contents, these things were never foreign to the people in Nepal. Many temples in Nepal have such carvings of people and animals engaged in sexual acts. These age old carvings were always open to public and the people were proud about the openness.

Nihita Biswas making headlines… again (photos)

Sweetheart of international convict and ‘serial killer’ Charles Sobhraj, Nihiti Bishwas, surprised everybody when she announced that she was in love with Sobhraj. 65 year-old Sobraj and 21 year-old Nihita is an odd couple even without the the spicy criminal scene. That was why Nepali director Narayan Puri once told he wanted to make a movie out of their story in 2009.

The ‘love story’ made headline once again when the Supreme Court postponed Charle’s case. The journalists present there to cover the final verdict of the Court had nothing but Nihita Biswas to report about.

In 2008, Sobhraj and Nihita told that they got married on Dashain, the of biggest Hindu festival. But, as no priest or any court papers were involved the marriage proved to be a publicity hoax.

Journalism Ethics, Maya Bazin, Smita Thapa, and Kantipur

UPDATE: One of the admins of the site hosting Maya’s video has replied to our question about the background of Maya Bazin. Here is what they have to say:

She’s a |**rn girl. That’s why she’s lying. Most girls don’t want to give away their real background so she made something up. ….

I hope the editors in Saptahik have learned the lesson.

Last time, when the infamous sex tape of Namrata Shrestha was covered in various media, BBC Nepali initiated a discussion on the Journalist ethics and responsibility. At that time many media houses, including Kantipur publication, choose to ignore the issue and acted as if the scandal didn’t happen.

The time has changed. It seems, Kantipur is regretting the noble decision it made at that time.

When Kantipur published an interview of an intoxicated and sexually aggressive model/actress, Smita Thapa, we questioned its real purpose. A latest front-page article about a sex film actress, Maya Bazin, has made the interview of Smita Thapa insignificant to talk about.

As far as I know, it is illegal to make or sell sex films in Nepal. Such act is punishable by law. Does that make it illegal to create undue interest on such films in general public? I hope, the law pundits will answer the question in comment.

Beauty Contests – another hat-trick in July with Miss Angel

I wrote about the flood of beauty contests in December when there were 3 beauty contests being held in a week’s time (hat-trick, if you like – Republica Miss Teen, Riddhi Siddhi Miss Teen, and Miss Teen Tamang). After that, we had College Ambassador, Miss Mangol, Miss India Worldwide Nepal, Kid Queen, Miss Lumbini, and announcements of Miss Tamang (canceled) plus combined Miss Tamang and Miss Aryan. That is not all, we have a recent announcement of yet another contest, Miss Angel 2010.

The organizers of Miss Angel believe that the event will be nearly equivalent to Miss Nepal in terms of size! (But, I don’t have any reason to believe it.) The event is going to be held on July 17. They have only a month to prepare for the event and they want it to make a grand event… It however looks better in terms of prizes – Rs. 100,000 for the winner and 50,000 and 30,000 for the first and second runner up is not a bad prize money.

A rough history of beauty contests from November to May (10 contests in 7 months and another hat-trick beauty contest announcement for July)**

  1. Mr and Miss Kathmandu – November, 2009
  2. College Ambassador – December, 2009
  3. Miss Newa – December, 2009
  4. Republica Miss Teen – December, 2009
  5. Miss Teen Tamang – December, 2009
  6. Riddhi Siddhi Miss Teen – January, 2010
  7. Miss Mangol – March, 2010
  8. Miss India Worldwide Nepal – March, 2010
  9. Kid Queen – May, 2010
  10. Miss Lumbini – May, 2010
  11. Miss Tamang – July, 2010 (announced)
  12. Miss Aryan – July, 2010 (announced)
  13. Miss Angel – July, 2010 (announced)

** – This is a rough and unofficial statistics based on our previous reporting. There might have been more contests at that time.
