Four Nepali movies apply to participate in Oscar Awards, foreign film category

For the Oscar Awards to be held in February, four Nepali movies have applied to be selected to represent Nepal in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The application from the makers of Sunpani, Nishani, Bhimdatta and Talakjung VS Tulke was received to the Film Development Board, Nepal.

Application was called from the movies released between Ashoj 15, 2071 to Bhadra 14, 2072 BS to apply for the consideration to send to the Oscar awards in the USA. A five-members Oscar Award Selection Committee will evaluate the applications and send the most appropriate movie to the Oscar Awards selection committee.

Film Critics Awards 2015 goes to Kabaddi

The Films Critics Society of Nepal (FICSON) has announced the winners of the second Critics Award. The movies released in 2071 BS were considered in the selection of the winners. Winners were selected in eight different categories. Best Background Music award is an addition to the categories awarded last year.

The winner of Critics Awards 2015 are:

  • Best Film – Kabaddi (watch ‘Kabaddi’ here)
  • Best director – Nischal Basnet for ‘Talakjung Vs Tulke’
  • Best ActorDayahang Rai for his role in ‘Kabaddi’

  • Best Cinematographer – Andra Belisiya for ‘Suntali’

Friday Release – Bhairav and Resham Filili

This Friday, on August 28, two of the most awaited movies are releasing in theater. Actor Nikhil Upreti‘s comeback movie ‘Bhairav’ and the movie of the viral song, ‘Resham Filili’. These two movies are targeted to two different types of audience – one for action movie lovers and other for comedy movie lovers.

Nikhil Upreti’s movie ‘Bhairav’ went through a lengthy process of Censor Board and was finally granted a PG certificate two days before the release. The Board had questioned the political aspect of the movie. The movie is also the debut of Nikhil as a director.

Friday Release – Hostel Returns

This week, on August 21, 2015 Nepali movie ‘Hostel Returns’ is released in theaters all over Nepal. The movie, previously scheduled to release on May 8 had been delayed by the earthquake of April 25. The movie made on the story of the engineering students living in a hostel features new artists in leading roles. The movie directed by Suraj Bhusal features new actors Sashi Shrestha, Sushil Shrestha, Swostima Khadka, Abhaya Baral and Najir Hussein in main roles.

The movie by noted producer Sunil Rawal is a sequel of his previous hit movie ‘Hostel’ (watch ‘Hostel’ here). Sunil had also produced another hit movie ‘Saayad’ in the past (watch ‘Saayad’ here). Based on his past record of producing hit movies and the success of ‘Hostel’ the movie ‘Hostel Returns’ is also considered one of the most awaited movies of the current time.

Paradeshi first look trailer and music released, film to release in Dashain

After the success of ‘Gorkha Paltan’, the producers of the movie Rajesh Banshal and director Narayan Rayamajhi have teamed up to produce ‘Paradeshi’. The music and the trailer of the movie was released in a program held on August 19 in Kathmandu.

In the program, the release date of the movie was also announced. The movie is going to release on the Dashain festival. ‘Pardeshi’ features ex-Indian Idol, Prashant Tamang with Rajani KC in leading roles. This is the second movie of ‘Loafer’ debut actress Rajani.

Hostel Returns special show held in Australia, releasing in Nepal this Friday

The movie scheduled to release on Friday this week, ‘Hostel Returns’ was premiered in Sydney, Australia. Three shows were held in the city for the Nepali viewers living in the city. After the success of the show in Australia, various shows are planned in different parts of the world. A special show of the movie in Korea is scheduled for August 30, 2015.

‘Hostel Returns’ is the sequel of a successful movie ‘Hostel’ (watch ‘Hostel’ here). The movie directed by Suraj Bhusal mostly features new actors including the lead Sushil Shrestha, Sashi Shrestha and Swastima Khadka. The movie is made on the story of a hostel for engineering students.

Sunkali and Love You Baba screened in Shinokubo Film Festival in Japan

The movie by the world record holder youngest director, Saugat Bista, is being screened in a film festival in Japan on August 16. With ‘Love You Baba’, Bhojraj Bhatt movie ‘Sunkali’ is also being featured in  Shinokubo Film Festival, in Japan. The festival started on August 15 in Tokyo. (we wrote about the participation of the films in our previous post.)

The world record holder 8-years-old Saugat Bista is participating in the festival with his mother. Similarly, ‘Sunakali’ maker, Bhojraj Bhatt, has also told that the movie show was a success.

2072, Nepali film release calendar

UPDATE (November 17) – ‘Jaun Hinda Pokhara’ release date November 20 and ‘Adha Page’ date December 25 added.

Nepali year 2072 BS started on Tuesday, Baisaksh 1 (April 14, 2015). No new Nepali movies were released on the first Friday of the new year, on April 17. On  the second week, April 24 new movie ‘Resham Filili’ was released and previously released film ‘Jhola’ was also re-released. On the very next day, devastating earthquake hit Nepal and and halted all the film activities for the next few months.

The earthquake was the reason behind no new film release for three months from April to July.

Nepali movies screened in the Festival of Globe, USA (Photos)

Festival of Globe (FOG) has been going on in the USA since August 7 and will wrap up on August 16. Nepali artists participating in the festival include Nandita KC, Keki Adhikari, Suresh Darpan Pokharel, Richa Ghimire, Shankar BC, Sunil Thapa and others.

Shilpa Pokharel finalized to lead Kismat 2

Although the release date of the upcoming movie ‘Kismat 2’ is already announced – on the last Friday of 2072, the artists are yet to be finalized. In a latest report, actress Shilpa Pokharel is going to be featured in leading role. Although Chhabi had previously announced Shilpa to lead the movie, the official announcement was made recently.

The sequel of the hit movie ‘Kismat’  will not repeat any of the original artists. The original ‘Kismat’ had featured Rekha Thapa, Aryan Sigdel and Biraj Bhatt in leading roles. Although rumors of the possibility of Aryan is going on, Rekha and Biraj are out of picture for now.

6 movies to release on the year end, filmmaking yet to start

Nepali movie industry is a very strange type of industry. In our film industry, most of the business logics fail economic has the least effect on film making. Because of the lack of professionalism in the industry, personal ego and social status are considered more important than the economic viability of the movie. The announcement of 6 movies on the same day, at the end of the year, can considered one of such examples.

On the last Friday of the year 2072 BS, on Chaitra 26 (April 8, 2016), six different movie makers have announced the release date of their movies. It is interesting that five out of the six movies are yet to go to the floor yet. The movies are:

Out of these movies, only the movie ‘Lootera’ has completed its shooting. The movie featuring Nikhil Upreti was previously announced to be released in Tihar but now the release date has been delayed by 5 months. The crew and artists of some of the movies are yet to be determined.

Friday Release – Sapana Timro Mero

On August 7, 2015 new movie by director Rishi Raj Acharya, ‘Sapana Timro Mero’ was released in theaters in Nepal. The movie made on action and love story is the second movie of the ‘Mistake’ director (watch ‘Mistake’ here).

‘Sapana Timro Mero’ features cinematography of Rahul Rai, choreography of Ghambir Bista, action by Samrat Basnet and editing of Nabin Niraula. The movie spans for about 2.5 hours. The movie is made on a triangular love story between the characters played by actor Sushant Karki with actresses Janwi Bohara and actress Surajani KC. Actor Sabin Shrestha is also featured in a special role in the movie.

Dilip Rayamajhi, Sagun Shahi and Sujana Dhakal to be featured in Nalapani

Actor Dilip Rayamajhi is told to be returning back to Nepal from the USA to act in upcoming movie ‘Nalapani’. The movie is scheduled to start the shooting on September 9 (Bhadra 23). Dilip had recently headed to the USA after receiving the permanent resident status, Green Card. Although there are rumors that he won’t return back to Nepal, he has insisted that he would continue to act in Nepali movies.

In addition to Dilip, actress Sagun Shahi and actress Suzana Dhakal are going to be featured in a historical. The movie to be made on the war of Nalapani against British colonial power has been one of the bravest war Nepali had fought in the history. The movie written and directed by Shivam Adhimari is being produced by Rimesh Adhikari under Padma Kumari Films banner.

After Bhuwan KC, his ex-wife Sushmita to debut as a director

Actress Sushma KC (Bomjom) has decided to jump into direction. The timing of the announcement has come right after her ex-husband and the father of her son Anmol KC, actor and producer, Bhuwan KC has started directing his debut movie. There are rumors that Sushmita wants to challenge Bhuwan by showing that she can also direct movies.

In response to the rumor, Sushmita has written a lengthy message in her Facebook profile explaining that she has no intention of competing with Bhuwan KC. In addition to being the father of her son, she has also told that she respect Bhuwan as her acting and movie making teacher. Full message is attached below.

Top 5 nominations, NEFTA Award 2015 (full list)

The nomination of the top 5 in the NEFTA Awards was announced in a press meet held in Kathmandu. The nominations selected by a 6-members jury has released the nominations of 35 different categories.

Like the previous a couple of editions of the award ceremonies, 2015 edition will also be held in a foreign country. The ceremony is going to be held in association with the International Artist Forum, Qatar. Previously the award ceremonies were held in Malaysia and Hong Kong.
